I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
My friend the other week literally just thought the Wii U was some sort of add on to the Wii, and not a whole new system. Nintendo needs to get their marketing shit together.

I have this weird mixture of pity and ... pity.
I guess my reaction wouldn't be like that if sales were better, but then again, this would likely not exist.

You know you're in good shape when you actually have to tell owners of your old console that your new one isn't just an upgrade from the old one. Bravo nintendo.

Oh man, this is too desperate.

Guess they can't exactly put an ad up on the wii? I don't remember, maybe they can.

Come on, do you think Microsoft or Sony wouldn't use the huge install base of their old consoles to promote their new ones? They would be stupid not to.

No, they fucked up the marketing

This, Nintendo thought they could ride on the Wii brand again and be successful, how they didn't see this coming without proper marketing baffles me.

Edit: This might actually be a great way for Sony and MS to spread the word, their install bases are big enough so a couple of PMs before next gen arrives will get them some free and useful advertising.

If they have to explain to every single Wii owners out there that Wii U is whole new console instead of being an upgrade...I don't know what to say.
Why haven't they done that last year?

They had to do something to clear this up to casual Wii owners, the marketing campaign was dead on arrival because of the lack of clarity.

Poetic really, attempting to bank on past success with the Wii by keeping the brand name, yet confusing the consumers in the process thus not generating nearly the same waves.

Oh Nintendo how did ye fell so low? Grasp thy sword and take that final swing beyond beyond the blue oceans the singing brooks. The curtain is drawing near the final act has commenced. Can you hear the crescendo? Come let us sit together one last time as we watch the twilight into the night...

Good for them but this seems desperate. It's like they expect the same people who got the Wii to upgrade to a WiiU which lacks many of the same types of games that made Wii a success.

I suppose it's the fact that the Wii wouldn't have another way to do it. No one will be surprised when a tile of the 360 dash advertises the next Xbox, but a message in the inbox might be seen as desperate. I dunno, hard to talk when that's hypothetical at this point.

I think at its core it's a good idea.

That said, I kind of wonder how many people fit all of the following criteria:

1.) Still actively using their Wii despite Nintendo having released their last major software quite a while ago.
2.) Have their Wii connected online.
3.) Read the messages sent to them.
4.) Did not already know of the Wii U.
5.) Did not just purchase a Wii and thus would potentially be interested in a Wii U.

The problem is that Nintendo HAS to tell their Wii owners that the Wii U isn't just an upgrade. Sony and Microsoft weren mt stupid enough to create a new console that was confused for a simple upgrade from the old. Even Nintendo admits people aren't understanding the Wii U is a brand new console.
