Thread with the color film of London from 1927 got me reminiscing. My cousin through my uncle uploaded a bunch of old family color photos from the 1940s onward, and I thought a few were sort of interesting, mostly by what they show about the styles and stories from the times. Does GAF have any interesting photos they would like to share? Here are a few from way back when...

Just a random family shot. My grandpa from my mom's side is the bald guy on the left, my dad is the dark haired guy next to him. All of the others are from my mom's family, my grandma is on the right with the hat and necklace. I am guessing this was sometime in the late 1940s.....

Mom and Dad on their wedding day, the little girl is my aunt. This is June 1948.

My Grandpa again, with two of my uncles, sometime in the 1950s. They ran a Hires root beer stand at the Ohio State Fair, I just thought this picture was neat for some reason...

My uncle after the war, probably 1945 or 46. He was a army medic, and he was captured by the Germans in France and held in a prisoner of war camp until the end of the war. He almost starved to death as the Germans were running out of time and food for prisoners. He is still alive.

What pictures and stories does GAF have?

I'm the butterball cheesing in the middle. Interestingly enough we all look absolutely nothing like this anymore.

Is that meant for my pic?

Well, I mean you can certainly tell you are brothers and sisters. I have one brother and one sister, and I don't think we ever looked much alike, other than my sister and I have the same eye color....

That's a really cool photo.

My uncle who was in the prisoner of war camp was sort of a techie for his day. He was big into photography as a hobby, which is where these photos came from, but I remember him having high end reel to reel music tapes back in the 1960s and stuff like that. I think he usually made slides with his old color photos. My cousin uploaded hundreds and hundreds of old color photos not too long ago, all had been transfered from the slides his dad had made.

Come on GAF, somebody's got to have some cool, interesting old pics....

ha, that's pretty cool. Yea, you can tell that he knew how to really capture a scene by this photo, especially considering how dark it is and how much detail he was able to capture.

Oh yeah even to this day I have random people say the funniest things to me thinking I'm either my older brother (pictured) or my younger brother (not born yet and thus not pictured). I don't think since we've grown up we look that similar anymore but having random people yell my younger brother's name at me while I'm jogging tells me otherwise.

Not my brother and me. We both have (had) dark hair, but my brother's is sort of wavy and can get curly a bit if it gets long, and has dark brown eyes. My hair is straight and I have light green eyes. My brother when he grows a mustache looks really Jewish to me for some reason, but we are not Jewish at all (Irish/German/French Catholics).

Love this photo of my Nanna on her wedding day. The crazy thing is how much I look like her at this age. (see my avatar)

People always seemed to look so much classier back then. Every man back then looked good in a Tux...and the women back then just seemed to have a sweet look about them....great photo.

I have no pictures on the ready, and nothing else to add than to say that I also really like that state fair picture.

Interesting one-two combo with this and the London 1927 thread.

People used to give a shit.

I'm on my phone at work but when I get home I'll check my laptop. I know I have a chunk of old family photos on there.

You want old, old photos? I got some. Stories too even though my knowledge is a bit lacking in things that happened decades before I was born...

This is a picture of my father's father's stepdad's dad (I maybe could have put that simpler... Also no blood relation but whatever) and a friend (don't know which one is which sadly) when he was working at a mine in America. The picture has nothing written on the back like none of our family photos do for some reason, so there's some guessing involved here but I think based on their clothes and candles on the hats instead of lamps that this picture could be from the late 1800s. I found the photo in a chest at my parents' summer cottage and took it with me and framed it because it's so cool.

My great-great-grandmother from my mother's side. I know nothing about her but I think this picture is really cool. Again I don't know which year this is from :(

This is my great-granduncle from my mother's side and his family after they moved to America. Again I don't know much except I still have distant relatives in America because of him. My great-grandfather also worked in America for a while but when he came back to Finland to organize his family's move over there things didn't move fast enough and suddenly they had too many kids to afford to move across the ocean anymore so he had to stay here. I wouldn't exist if they'd had condoms back then!

My great-grandfather from my mother's side with a work crew, he is in the front right with the black vest and not looking at the camera. They were building a rectory.

My mom's father in the middle, his brother on the right and a friend on the left. This pic is from the 1930s I believe.

My grandpa's brother on the left who was in the previous pic as well, and I'm posting this so you can see some old-fashioned photo retouching in the next pic:

BQaBuU8.jpg

The face is from the previous pic but his hat and outside clothes are gone in favour of a more civilized look. I can't remember why this was done and why they couldn't just get a new picture. I think he died or something. Was he the one who died in an explosion? I'm bad with family history :/

WG7vUau.jpg

And this is my grandpa's other brother, he was killed by a village crazy person when he was not much older than what he is in this pic. The story of how he died was pretty much like Yoren's brother's from Game of Thrones,
except my grandpa didn't get to avenge his death (luckily).

There we go, crazy death stories and old pics, I don't have others on the computer. My sister has a super cool collection of photos of my grandma when she was a dancer and choir member at a theater, for some reason I have none of them but they are really cool, weird costumes and sets and stuff. Not this peasant stuff like in these pictures.

Sorry for the long post! :)

This has me wondering... who is the oldest poster on GAF? Also, what are things like the mean age, etc.? We need a GAF census.

I think the oldest Gaffer is in his fifties.

I remember playing Rainbow Six back in the day with a guy in his sixties.

My Dad's brother, my Dad's Dad, my Dad.

Oldest one I have on my computer, probably sometime in the 60's.

That really is a super badass and impressive photo. Looks like it could be from a movie or like it should at least be in a coffee table book about that period of time. Seriously.

Ahh, so your mom also thought it'd be a riot to dress you up as girl.

That's (Desi) Pakistani moms for ya', they'll get there way somehow

She did go overboard...

Her with her grandmother (my great grandmother, with cousins/great uncles)

edit: i too am a former victim of maternally-coerced cross dressing, but i don't have the picture to show you, fortunately. my wife has tried to dress my son similarly, but i stopped it at the head band. happy mother's day mom! happy mother's day wife!

I think there's at least a few older than their fifties. I remember thinking I was one of the oldest guys at 47 until a "post your age" thread came along and I was put in my place.

This is a fantastic thread, I'm going to try and get some old photos from my parents place next time I'm home. This thread made me realize I should get them scanned and digitized just for archival purposes at the very least.

No clue man (firs time hearing or even knowing what breeching was), she always wanted girl, couldn't get her wish, me and my brother paid dearly for it from time to time

Luckily her sister (my aunt) had 2 girls (nieces, my first cousins) back to back, so the urge subsided and we became boys again
