Media Create Sales: Week 19, 2013 (May 06 - May 12)

I think PS4 sales curve will be pretty much same as PS3 had but with something like 20% drop. Rough start but it will pick up some steam later on as the same big franchises arrive to it as they did to PS3 (MGS, FF, GT, RE etc.). It will be the core gamer machine once again in Japan.

Except it will be a lot longer for exclusive versions of those franchises to hit. Cross gen games aren't going to do shit for expensive non BC hardware in Japan. The next RE is a long way away. GT will be cross platform at best meaning we won't see GT7 for a long time. MGS is also cross gen. Final Fantasy is the only one of those with a legitimate shot to be PS4 exclusive early on. Looking at the current market as it is, PS4 is going to have a pretty long struggle until the price comes down.

Well when you put it that way I can see where you come from. It really seems that Sony cares about Japan less and less. But it will still get the proper next gen versions of those games when they release in far future even if it had only 2 million base in Japan because of western sales so maybe it will be just even later bloomer than PS3.

i've said it before .

Untill TGS game anouncements .launch lineup and a price anouncement is made . there is no possible way to predict what ps4's chances are in japan.

I don't know if i should be laughing or crying at this . possibly both.

I believe the same. Without concrete information about the price or initial lineup, any prediction about the PS4 (in Japan or elsewhere) is just a shot in the dark.

I also think they will have to start announcing games for Japan before TGS, otherwise they might loose their chance to build momentum by announcing launch titles just a couple of months (guessing a November launch) before release.

Was she the original source because there's plenty of sources implying GT6 would be on the PS3 and likely PS3 only.

Quoting from the other first GT thread (already locked):

What happened to that 20 – 30k Vita baseline people were talking about on gaf? It’s on its way back to the sub 10k days and Wii U hitting 5k very soon.

Shocking!!!
There's this new thing now, we call it "the year". It has a sequence of weeks inside it. The latest cutting-edge research suggests that there's some sort of recurring pattern.

So the implication is that GT6 will be a late port?
Wouldn't that significantly damage its ability as a PS4 seller?

I don't know. It kinda seems GT6 is going with the iRacing model of updating the engine every 3-4 years and giving a constant stream of new content each month. This could mean it might have more legs than usual and a PS4 might sell better as its more of a multiplatform release then a port.

Earlier in the thread, Schuelma mentioned Pikmin 3's selling potential. Look at the weekly sales of Pikmin:
Code:
Pikmin 1
2001-10-22 101,299
2001-10-29 26,461
2001-11-05 15,443
2001-11-12 9,189
2001-11-19 15,529
2001-11-26 9,912
2001-12-03 10,629
2001-12-10 21,176
2001-12-17 53,421
2001-12-24 49,584
2001-12-31 53,325
2002-01-07 16,640
2002-01-14 12,770
2002-01-21 12,500
2002-01-28 10,174
2002-02-04 6,379
2002-02-11 6,002
2002-03-04 4,924

Do you see how they rise in December? See how it sold more than in its first five weeks? That corresponds to the release of Ai no Uta - the song from the Pikmin commercial - as a CD single.
December 4th.

I think the problem with late ports is that you can already get the game elsewhere, often on a system you already own. I'm not sure how the model you described changes that.

Kagari said in the official GT6 event thread that he knows about a PS4 version.

Yep:

Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that the upcoming sixth entry in the racing simulator series is also being considered for release on PlayStation 4.

Speaking at today’s Gran Turismo 15th Anniversary event at Silverstone racetrack in England, Yamauchi told IGN, “We actually do have a PlayStation 4 version in mind, but for this holiday season, we thought it would be best for users to release on PS3 for now.”

Players eager to race around the world’s most iconic stadiums in all their next generation glory may want to put their brakes on though. Yamauchi adds, “I thought the best scenario would be to have the game come out, then to have new scenarios, new DLC and other updates. Once the players have thoroughly played out the system, if the PlayStation 4 version came out naturally, as part of that process, I think that would be the best scenario.”

Asked whether progress could be transferred from PS3 to future PS4 versions of the game, Yamauchi would only offer a coy “probably”.

Expect more info on the PS4 version of Gran Turismo 6 to be announced closer to the PS3 version’s release.

It definitely would, but the sales of the PS3 version would offset that loss imo. As long as it sells within their estimates they shouldn't care on which console it does.

Does anyone know if porting the game from the PS3 to the PS4 would be costly? I imagine it will, but no idea to what degree exactly.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Baba was also very clear about staying with playstation as every tales game sold better on their systems and the fact that three tales games came to vita despite them all bombing shows it.
No sympathy there.

These charts now use Famitsu data. All software charts now represent the top 30.

All charts launch-aligned. All data from Famitsu.
Weekly numbers presented in logarithmic base 1,000 for clarity. In that case, zero units are represented by one unit.

Tally of the number of titles for that platform in the top 30 for each week.
Certain weeks may have titles that aren't represented. These are the PS3's 7th, and the Wii's 4th and 23rd.

Feel free to criticize or point out mistakes.

I cant figure out what these charts mean. Whats on the X axis? Why is Wii above everything else?

X axis = week number

Wii is above everything else because it sold like gangbusters, launch aligned with the other consoles, right off the bat. It was an unstoppable juggernaut from launch itself.

The charts are comparing the consoles from their own respective launch dates, on a week to week basis.

Oh wow... Those Wii U hardware numbers... Is that the worst yet?

The software sales seem pathetic too. I mean for fucks sake, there's a Wii game in the top 20 but not a single Wii U game.

Wii U hardware is tracking higher than the PS3 was at this point in it's lifetime and we haven't reached the holiday season yet.

The situation is not that grim, but that is a pretty funny gif.

No, the situation is worse than what you want to believe.

And it's not tracking higher than PS3, weekly sales alligned are below it.

The Wii U's launch was more front-loaded compared to the PS3 launch and quickly dropped off, meaning that it's doing much worse post launch than the PS3 was. Also, the PS3's first few years were considered incredibly horrible, and only got better much later on in the life cycle due to Sony's first party efforts + third party support. Right now the Wii U has neither, and come holiday season it'll potentially have one (first party support). Major third party support is never going to be coming though due to hardware differences and lack of sales from Nintendo console owners. To be honest though I'm not sure why you'd even try to justify the Wii U sales figures by comparing it to another poor console launch when the situations are different.

Wii U's situation is pretty bad, and Nintendo's support and approach with the Wii U will be the deciding factor whether of not the Wii U will be able to get back on track. If sales don't massively pick up during the holiday season (and beyond) we are looking at a Gamecube or worse situation. That's pretty fucking grim if you ask me.

Sony's 1st party efforts did basically nothing to turn PS3 around in Japan, unless you're counting hardware rivisions and pricedrops. Equating them with Nintendo's 1st party capability is laughable.

Since there is a bit of debate about this, I thought it might be an interesting business question.

You're Sony, and you've put Japan Studios on to making a new Monster Hunter-esque game.

Is it:
A.) For Vita, in an effort to give Vita owners a new Monster Hunter-esque game every 2-3 months.
B.) For PS4, in an effort to go after the Monster Hunter console audience.

We also get to see the Wii U Summer/Spring line-up (presumably in full?) tomorrow:

A new #NintendoDirectEU with a focus on #WiiU spring/summer titles will be streamed tomorrow, 17/5 at 4pm CEST http://ow.ly/i/283XY

The one beyond that is at E3:

For #WiiU titles coming this autumn and beyond, there will be a #NintendoDirectEU around E3 time in June http://ow.ly/l5Q8e

I assume the June one is the E3 Direct, but I hope they give it to us in the first week.

Wonder if tomorrow's in JP as well, with so little there, what could they show in it?

For Vita. Monster Hunter only really exploded as a portable title, and the Vita could use every title it can get. The PS4 shouldn't have the same problem.

Console MH never really did that great, 3 cracked a million but a clones not getting close to the numbers of the originals either way.

Like michaelius aid ps4 will get 3rd party support by default(FF, RE, MGS, Fighting games and anything else that sells or wants to sell in the west), and they need vita games.

That said they should be doing more than just mh clones. Action game or rpg, survival horror or anything.

Another potential debate that I believe sony should have is with their japanese first party support.I feel like putting their japanese games on vita is a better decision than PS4 since we are pretty sure PS4 will have all the western one. They should try pushing the vita on the japanese market instead of the west that they are doing at the moment (comparatively, obviously).

That's what they pretty much did with the PSP but with the exception of PD for obvious reasons I believe it would be a good choice to have every single japanese studio working on vita. With a decent budget this time.

EDIT: Soul Sacrifice is a great example of what I think they should be doing.Just in a bigger scale.

(Probably B to be honest, there are plenty of Vita MH-style games in the pipeline).

Posted this in the GT thread,

I'm curious about this:

Japan sales
Code:
Gran Turismo 2,550 million
Gran Turismo 2 1,710 million
Gran Turismo 3 A-spec 1,890 million
Gran Turismo Concept 2001 TOKYO	430K
Gran Turismo 4 “Prologue”	790K
Gran Turismo 4 1,270 million
Gran Turismo 5 “Prologue”	740K
Gran Turismo PSP 380K
Gran Turismo 5 780K

As we can see, GT5 is the only major GT to not reach 1 million in sales in Japan, I'm wondering if GT6 will outsell it or fall short. There will be no GT6P, so there might be a chance. It's worth noting that GT5P only reached that number due to, at one point, EVERY PS3 came bundled with GT5P Spec III IIRC. I don't think GT6 will get to 1 million, but may outsell GT5 in Japan, depending on how Sony handles the PS3 price at that point.

PSV/PS3/PS4 cross play. There's no MH like game that provides seamless cross play functionality between console and handheld. Judging by MH4's recent screens, graphics is something that audience doesn't really care about so they can code to the lowest common denominator (PSV) with some AA and whatever on PS3/PS4. Let players play with/against each other in every combination as well as carry over their progress from system to system.

For the Vita.

Hunting Action games took-off on handhelds, and would find a sizable audience on handhelds.

EDIT: Cross-play isn't a bad idea either, would actually be better since it would allow one to see which platform would be better for a sequel or something.

Why not both? Cross play/Cross Buy exists in Japan no?

If I had to pick one though its PS4. Because putting it on the PS4 alone even entices Vita owners to go get a PS4 for off screen play (obviously not for this one game but it adds up over time).
