Sonic the Hedgehog getting a 3D classics remake for 3DS

Every time Sega makes a port of the 16bit Sonic games I wish for a Sonic Jam-like menu.

With time-attack mode etc.

Well, Super Hang-On and Space Harrier are also in widescreen and they're part of this same line of Sega's 3D Classics, making this Sonic one the odd one out. The other options do look nice.

But those just stretch the image to fill the screen when in widescreen...kinda making them a bit unplayable (or at least not ideal).

Do not want.

I have Sonic 1 to play on the go, Steam, Genesis... If it was a collection of the games remastered in 3D... then I would think.

My beef is that why Taxman can do widescreen but not Sega/M2:

Seems odd, I know Kirby and Kid Icarus lack 16:9 as well, but why did they do it for Space Harrier and Super Hang On, but not Sonic when Taxman did?

Don't they have to essentially remake the 2D games to make them 3D?

So why not widescreen like the Sonic CD remake?

funnily enough they are making a sonic CD esc port for sonic 1 and 2 for ios and android.

its just another case of bad communication between SoJ and SoA

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.

Not necessarily. There are a whole bunch of variables here.

Taxman (and maybe a small group of other people?) is/are working on ports of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 to iOS/Android utilizing the Retro Engine. So he/they have an existing workload. The Retro Engine is multiplatform, but is it working flawlessly on 3DS right now? Can it already leverage the 3D display? If it can't, more work and more time before the games can be released.

Meanwhile, M2 has already worked on several titles for 3DS VC and made the other two 3D Classics for Sega. I guess they could be put to work releasing more VC games or a different 3D Classic game. But if Sega wanted the 3D Classic games to look and operate consistently, (same UI, same/similar configuration options) they'd probably want to go with M2 again even if Taxman and friends were totally free.

OMG. You guys! YOU GUYS!!1
You know what game would make a great 3D classic?

Comix Zone!

Do it Sega!
Oh man, I would buy this at a high price. The game's art style would completely pop with a good 3D effect applied to everything.

Not actually that important
I looked at the images in the link and seriously thought "what is different."
I am still serious, I can't see it from that website. I suppose the 3D effect is supposed to happen when you're playing the game on 3DS

Bingo. Why would it look different on a 2D display?!

but most other games seem to give you some hint of what to expect when you're looking at screens from a non-3D device... like your computer.

Wat
Give me a few examples of 2D and 3D screens where you get some 3D hint on a 2D monitor.

I'm sorry but I'm being serious :(

Ahah, no problem mate

Two hours?

I gonna jump on that. Really was hoping they would have stayed with arcade ports. But I guess Sonic is as good as any if they wanna do a Genesis game.

Downloaded and tried it out. Looks fricken amazing on an XL. So, crisp...and just a ton of options.

The thing I was most curious was the CRT mode. It is pretty damn funny. The went for a composite style effect with bleeding and use the 3D effect not for the in-game graphics (those remain 2D) but to mimic as if you are playing on a small-ish 13-inch TV. So the screen is oval and the screen sides all drop away from you with depth. Everything gets warped at the edges. Very fun! Image below is blurry since it is the CRT mode. Actual game is so crisp!

I assume the actual game supports 3D hence the point of the release?

If they implemented widescreen would be so much better.

Especially with a CRT effect, even maybe have an old television with knobs to fill out space ?

Indeed, the actual port is beautifully 3D. If it is possible to still get excited about the first Sonic game this reason enough. Looks fantastic on an XL. CRT mode is the bonus 3D mode kinda like the screen tilt in Space Harrier and Super Hang-On

Really no point for widscreen on Sonic. The idea of it is that it is a port with integrity to the original release. Opening the playfield would change how you respond to enemies appearing on the screen.

I... I love this.

Downloaded it on my original 3DS, and it looks fantastic in 3D. It's the same game as ever, but it just looks really bold and crisp. I love all the options, even though there's not much of a point to the button remapping option. The moving clouds in the JP version really look cool with the 3D parallax layers. CRT mode is hilarious. It also has the two different 3D options from SM3Dland.

Has anyone noticed what difference changing the sound balance from Megadrive 1 to Megadrive 2 makes?

Damn, though, I really need to upgrade to a 3DS LL.

Indeed, CRT mode was indeed glorious.

Also bought Super Hang-On and Space Harrier at the same time. Super Hang-On is EXTREMELY fun using 3DS tilt to play :D
Really felt like on the being on the motorcycle arcade cabinet

3D effect really is great here. The first time I seen Green Hill Zone's background it almost made me feel that it was made for 3D. Really impressed.

More of these 3D upgrades please Sega, all have been great so far.

Having the 3D in crt mode make you feel like you are sat in front of a tube tv is a great idea, but the way they warp stuff is too extreme, I never remember my old tv's doing that much warping.

Quick question about CRT mode. Are the sides be cut-off too to represent overscan? Or is this some sort of overscan free CRT that has the system which is hooked up using bad cables :p (like when people have composite going into an HDTV...)

Space Harrier 3D is coming to Europe, and hopefully NA as well.

That probably means this will come over too... eventually.
