Media Create Sales: Week 20, 2013 (May 13 - May 19)

Blocking used games would just open the door for Nintendo in Japan to have a much greater chance with Wii U. Hell Nintendo could devote an entire campaign to being the only console without used restrictions and it would probably have an impact. Remember the PS4 doesn't have some kind of huge strength going into this race with all the cross gen titles it will have with PS3. They would be dooming themselves for at least a few years by pulling that stunt and it might even forece Japanese publishers who are interested in the home market to stay on PS3 and maybe even consider Wii U. It would be beyond crazy which is why at worst Sony will completely leave the door open for publishers to decide what they do and no Japanese publishers will be dumb enough to try it. MS may as well just not even launch in Japan because they probably won't even reach a million sold by the end of the generation.

Some retailer's first day impressions:
Tadapon:

Shin Megami Tensei IV 40% sellthrough (bundle sold out)
Resident Evil Revelations 40% sellthrough
Kamen Rider (Limited edition) 80% sellthrough
Kamen Rider (standard) 70% sellthrough
Valhalla Knights 3 50% sellthrough

Upcoming Wii U bump for the next Media Create thread?

lol.

As much as I wish that was the case I'm not really seeing it. PS4 will share games with XBONE and PC, both systems which will block used games, so there's not really an alternative for people that want to play those games. Used game market is big in Japan because it can be, but new game market is also large, and the new game sales are what we generally actually discuss week in week out. Of course there would still be alternatives (3DS,PS3,PSV,WiiU) which don't block used games, and that could slow down rate of adoption for new systems if they are all anti-used games, but it's like saying PS1 and PS2 were only popular because they allowed pirated games. Of course that made them popular in Asia because of that, but past generation when neither PS3 or X360 were easily "piratable" (for online play at least) we've actually started to see some half decent sales for PS3 software (from the limited data we get).

Obviously people prefer to pay cheaper for stuff, but if they don't have that option many will still pay full price for what they want.

not sure why you mix used games and pirated games.

Some retailer's first day impressions:

GamesMaya:

Shin Megami Tensei IV > Kamen Rider: Battride War > Valhalla Knights > Resident Evil Revelations > Terraria

Azalyn:

Shin Megami Tensei IV - 30 copies sold
Kamen Rider: Battride War - 24 copies sold (Sold out)
Resident Evil: Revelations (PS3) - 19 copies sold
Valhalla Knights 3 - 10 copies
Terraria - 3 copies (Sold out)

Osakaking:

Shin Megami Tensei IV first, then Valhalla Knights 3 and Kamen Rider. Kamen Rider is selling more than expected.

Yosipooh:

Kamen Rider and Terraria sold out. Terraria had just few copies but Kamen Rider was very popular. They had a lot of stock for SMTIV so no sold out yet.

Tadapon:

Shin Megami Tensei IV 40% sellthrough (bundle sold out)
Resident Evil Revelations 40% sellthrough
Kamen Rider (Limited edition) 80% sellthrough
Kamen Rider (standard) 70% sellthrough
Valhalla Knights 3 50% sellthrough

LOL? It's not bombing, and it's a port.

RE7 will sell millions.

Its not like people bought the 3DS version so I'm not expecting big numbers but I was expecting it to get more attention than it seems to be getting.

Also, RE6 was poorly recieved so I'm interesting in seeing what they try next with the series.

People bought the 3DS version, it sold incredibly well in Japan.

And with RE6/RER feedback I believe Capcom will put the series back on track.

Well they have to do something.

Staying the course will lead them off a cliff.

RE:R sold 283,235.

RE doesn't really have a problem selling in Japan.RE6 sold 821,053.

It's the west that Capcom seems to want to focus on with RE for obvious reasons.

Hahaha, I'm reading the blog where Chris1964 posts the sellthrough and I think a lot of people will be happy. ;)

Chris has been saying the PSP is dead for a few years, yet here we are, with the no.1 game and three games inside the top 20 having sold more than 100k. Dead!
PS2 was still selling software for years after hardware collapsed, was it alive then?

Taiko sold 500k~ on Wii, is that alive also? Pokemon B&W2 sold millions, was DS also alive?

Hmm, just thought of something. What does everyone think DKCR3D will do compared to DKCR? Outsell it or just be short of it.

I feel like it has a good chance of selling more than the original.

Interesting. I also love the DKCR and Luigi Mansion chart. I'm gonna play safe and say almost identical!

Holy crap that would be amazing. I wouldn't mind a few ports on the 3DS in the meantime. SMT3DS, DDS3DS,etc.

Omg SMT4...I was expecting 200k LTD at best and it might hit that first week? No I'm not buying it. Ha.

PSP's alive and kicking. 3rd G announcement any day now, you'll see...

MHP4 you mean :p

Edit: Kamen Rider and Valhalla Knights seem great too! Marvelous are really hitting it with Vita.

Out of curiousity, why do you think that? Because many people didnt get the Wii version?

What? The Wii version sold almost a million.
Sure, i know :) What i ment is if he thinks that there are a lot of people interested in the game that didnt get the Wii version. Its basically a port of the Wii game, so there would have to be a lot of people wanting to play it for the 3DS version to sell over a million units. And the biggest chance of this happening is if many people didnt get the Wii version, at least that is what i think.

A 200k FW for SMT IV would be insane. That would be a franchise best and really close to Persona 4's opening.

I don't this it has any chance of outselling the original. Mostly because DKCR isn't that old, the added content is nothing really substantial and the game is releasing in a much slower (sales wise) time period.

It will still sell well everywhere, but I don't expect it to do amazing.

Ah I get you, and while I'm not him, I'd say there can't be that many people. The portable Donkey Kong games don't sell as well historically, so I don't see why this would be any different.

And that's why it's kinda hard to believe. I mean I'd love for it to happen so mainline SMT can continue to exist.

Lots of people played the Wii version. It sold 952,018 according to Garaph. I feel that due to the larger userbase and the fact it is on a handheld instead of a console in the days where handhelds dominated Japan. The latter part is mostly why I think it has a chance of outselling the original in the long run.

It is going to most likely be an evergreen title if DKCR's debut is anything to go by, which is 165,859 according to Garaph.

You're right, it isn't old, I didn't really consider that.

SMT4 doing 200k+ in the first week would be absolutely amazing. Given other FW releases in the series, including Persona, they would probably be on the 3DS to stay after that.

Yeah, that is what i also think. Hard to know how many people who want to replay the game on the 3DS, or how many people that are interested in the game, but didnt get the Wii version. And as you say, the other handheld Donkey Kong games didnt exactly sell tons of copies indeed. But it shall be interesting to see how Donkey Kong Country Returns on 3DS will sell at least :)

I see what you mean. I'm unsure how many that want to buy and replay the game (not that it is a bad game, but just wondering how many that are willing to buy basically the same game again). Being a portable game might have some advantage, but i dont know if it will be over a million. That would surprise me a lot, but we'll see :)

We gonna be sooo disappointed next week. :(

Well at least SMT IV is pretty much guaranteed to do really well (even if the numbers are not crazy) and it seems Atlus shipped enough copies this time. So it won't be hurt by shortages like SJ was.

I mean some people predicted the game wouldn't even break 200k.

Donkey Kong Country had two very late ports and they performed decently. Well, none of them were able to sell a tenth of what the original did, but that's understandable since Donkey Kong Country sold 3 million units.

I don't think the sales potential of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will be affected just because Donkey Kong Country Returns was released two and a half years ago.

[NGB] Donkey Kong Country (Nintendo) {2001.01.15} - 33.866 / 238.775
[GBA] Donkey Kong Country (Nintendo) {2003.12.08} - 33.766 / 251.878

[SFC] Donkey Kong Country (Nintendo) {1994.11.26} - 257.121 / 3.000.000

DKCR was also released during holiday period in Japan which almost 700K was sold in December. DKCR3D will not have that.

And

Wii's userbase when DKCR was released in Japan: 10.970.888
3DS userbase now: 11.436.567

Not much difference.

Donkey Kong Returns 3D won't sell so much. If it was a new entry probably would sell more than the Wii game, but being a port with a few extras there's no way to put big numbers.
