Sonic Lost Worlds Debut Trailer [Up: Wii U + 3DS screenshots]

I know the Sonic cycle tells me not to be fooled... But that looked like a good bit of fun!

The best thing about this? If it sucks, you can sell it. ;)

Shots fired!

OT the last Sonic I played was the one where you play as Shadow last gen. I never liked thoe 3D Sonic games becuse they felt very contrained and limited. This one looks more open, which is why I'm keeping an eye on it. I also like the sort-of pixelated grass.

Damn. Xtreme + Galaxy is looking very nice for Sonic.

Actually like the villains now with people comparing them to the Chaos Emerald colors or Monstars (lol).

Looking forward to see how this looks in the other enviroments, if it looks this nice for Green Hill.

And Generations?

Seriously, people that think the Sonic Cycle is still in effect are years out of the loop.

The series does still have recurring flaws, despite them getting better. So, that's still a cycle.

I'm not trying to argue for the cycle, but rather that both sides of this don't really hold much ground.

What's your favorite then? I can't think of a portable game I enjoyed more than Rush, but that's me.

The portable games are mostly rubbish in general, but Sonic Triple Trouble was pretty good for a Game Gear game.

I don't think Dimps could design their way out of a paper bag, though their solution would probably be full of boost pads and springs.

Oh.

Then, I'm not sure where you're getting that idea from. I can understand if you like the aesthetics of Galaxy better, but there is no denying that Lost Worlds is more crisp.

There's more to visuals than crispness and considering it has loads of AA unlike other Wii U games I suspect they may be bullshots.

I'm sure it'll be fast, smooth and clean but I was expecting much more than an up-resed simple looking 3DS game port.

Well I loved Rush quite a bit, never owned a Game Gear. Never really liked the Advance series or Rush Adventure either. Only the original Rush clicked with me, I just ran the levels I enjoyed over and over, trying to beat my times and scores.

If by best you mean worst I agree with you.

Worst 2D level design? Check
Terrible boost mechanic? Check

Nah, that's going a bit too far. Sonic Blast is hands down the worst portable Sonic to ever exist.

Blue Marine Zone... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Colors and Generations are sufficiently good enough that - even if an individual had issues with them - any notion of a "cycle" of disappointment is a fantasy.

We might as well talk about "The Zelda Cycle" or "The Final Fantasy Cycle" at that point.

Again, sufficiently good enough for everyone? Not everyone holds Generations to that level.

For example, I was completely disappointed by the classic Sonic levels. That's a half of the game right there. Should I chalk that one up as a victory? Same thing with Unleashed and the Warehog.

We might as well talk about "The Zelda Cycle" or "The Final Fantasy Cycle" at that point.

Right, there's no need to talk about these cycles. It's better to hold each game on its merits and flaws.

I'm just wondering how many people that post this 'broken cycle' are insinuating that Sonic is perfect again? And same for the reverse.

I might be alone in my opinion that Sonic Rush Adventure was better than the original in nearly every way (with music being an exception). I honestly felt that Rush Adventure has better levels, better bosses, better story, better replay value, better online mode, and loved the optional stages and 100 extra missions. The only thing I recall disliking about it was that each form of transportation, despite getting faster on the map, felt slower and felt less fun than the last.

I wasn't impressed with Rush Adventure but yeah it was a definite improvement from little of what I've played so far.

Well, as excited as I am for this, to be fair the apprehension comes from knowing that this is the same Sonic team that thought it a good idea to make barely dedecent controls in secret rings an unlockable and many more proposterous design decisions. Far from anything zelda tbh. Final fantasy is arguable.
They have been improving steadily though. I give you that.

I didn't like either of them. 3D parts of Colors was terrible on-rails garbage like usual, and the 2D sections were like some C-rank platformer I wouldn't have looked at twice during the nes/snes days.

Generations was a bit better on 2D, same on 3D.

I'd suggest you are a minority. Now, I'm not dismissing your opinion: it's perfectly valid. It might be an arguable opinion with great merit. But there are just as many dissenters for a number of huge series, and no one claims they have "cycles". Pretty sure more people hated the latest Zelda and FF games than hated Generations and Colors.

The reason why we have the concept of the Sonic Cycle is because of games like Heroes, Shadow and Sonic 2006. It went from being a beloved series in the 16-bit era, to being nearly unplayable. The new games are not even close to those universally hated pieces of shit, so new Sonic does not earn that level of pessimism.

Saying the Sonic Cycle is dead does not imply that all new Sonic games are A+, or perfect for everyone. It implies that the quality control has now been put in place to prevent bottom of the barrel crap.

Those screens look gorgeous on my tv to the point im thinking they may be bullshots. If the final game looks like that and runs at 60 fps i'll be more than happy.
Cautiously hyped.

The past half decade I've heard nothing but bitching about Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks and Skyward Sword... so that's where I'm coming from there.

... Did we get music composer confirmation yet?

Also, the music in the trailer seems like remixed uh, Rooftop Run. Same progressions, same key. (Schala where did you goooooo?)

Secret Rings started as a Wii port of '06 if I'm correct, and the turn over after '06 to Unleashed was significant, again, if I'm correct :p

I'm not sure on that. I've seen plenty of others who had large issues with the newer games.

Other series often have people claiming cycles, but this doesn't prove or disprove anything about the quality of the individual game.

Zelda for instance is often criticized for taking one step forward and two steps back in some area. It's an observable flaw that has been trending for the past several games. I don't think it's fair to hold this as an expectation in a 'cycle', but I do think it's fair for people to be cautious until the issue is fixed.

Agreed. They don't deserve that level of pessimism, but they do deserve cautious optimism because of past experience.

Ok, yeah, that's what I am hoping people mean.

Any of those games, flawed as they may be, are regarded as far superior (well maybe except phantom hourglass) than anything Sonic team had come up with in the last 15 years. Its the severity of their bad design choices that is somewhat baffling when they are bad.

That said, their good choices are outstanding. When they are good they truly shine, but when they are bad they are truly abysmal. Its quite interesting actually.
