Yay, people talking about things!

And as corrupted said, we could really use everyone's input on the new thread OP. Thanks!

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
question for the furries:

.......why?

I'm genuinely curious

For me, it comes down to the art.

And escapism I guess, but that's only possible because I find some furry art aesthetically appealing.

It's different from say, admiring hot men and women in real life, because with those cases, your enjoyment of them is primarily voyeuristic and visceral. You enjoy looking at them and following the things they do (as people), but there's no transformative factor to it. With furry art, as with all kinds of sufficiently abstract art (including the written word), there's an element of pretending to be what you perceive. It's far easier to project yourself onto a fictional character than a real person you have a photo of, so the experience is not only voyeuristic and visceral, but also vicarious.

the part I don't understand is where the sexualization comes in. or is that a general misconception that furries get turned on from it?

edit: nvm I just saw that big wall of text you added. yeah I think i get it now. so it's a bit like role playing then in a way

Kind of, yeah.

Not all furries get turned on by furry art, but the majority of them do. It's not that furries think about sex all the time (while that's not inaccurate), it's just that they're very open about their sexual desires and proclivities to a degree most people are not.

Think about what happens when someone makes a hot women/men thread in the OT boards, and then extrapolate that to an entire sub culture and you can understand why furries seem as horny as they are.

Only said so because you've said it before :p Everyone has their thing.

Oh boy, I've been neglecting Monster Hunter lately. Maybe it was bound to happen, when playing it every day since I got it.

yeah i think the furry sex addict cliche is just a result of being the main thing (sexualization of cartoon animals) furries (as a group) are attached to by the non-furry society members because it is easier to compartmentalize them negatively as a group instead of as individuals. kind of like how all strippers don't respect their bodies. it's easier if you don't understand something to then just latch onto the worst attribute and blanket it over every aspect of that culture/lifestyle.

but at the same time, isn't sex/sexual fantasy a significant part of the furry culture? or am I assuming too much when in reality its a case of admiration =/= sexual perversion

I can't answer affirmatively either way because I'm still something of an outlier but from what I've seen, yes, sex is a significant part of furry culture, just not the be-all and end-all some people make it out to be.

Any case of fantasy etc. is a characteristic of a smaller subset of the whole fandom. Same goes for suits, otherkin, etc. The whole subculture varies between different subjects and extremes, all sharing the "animal-like" label. It's just real easy to latch onto one thing and generalize the entire group, which isn't unique to furs alone.

Note: some things will vary in attention depending on where you look though. It's best to be fair and evaluate people as people.

The furry fetish people are the minority of the fandom. Despite what you see in popular culture.

I'm a staff member on the largest UK Furry community forum, and whenever the media contact us, looking for people to interview, they always want the "Weird ones". The people that have sex in fursuits. We just tell them to piss off, as none of us even know people who do that (Who the hell risks damaging an expensive suit by shagging in it?)

But sadly, they will always find someone to do it, and that's when you see them on TV. They do not represent the rest of us.

(And don't get me started on Beastophiles. They are NOT furries)

Furries like you in the UK or USA have such large communities. :/

I live in Austria...heck some people even don't know where this is! xD

If you out yourself as a furry in UK or USA people will probably know what Furries are or atleast I think it's easier to say "I am a furry yippeh!" in public.

I always have this feeling that for example in USA it would be much easier to be a furry.

Hell I dunno :/

I'd think it would be pretty hard to identify as a furry in some areas of the US.

Also there are people in the irc now if you want to chat with them.

Depending on where you live it's really not. While "furrydom" is more well known in the U.S., the public perception is almost entirely negative.

It is easier to find other furs though, I guess.

What's the new OT tagline? Furry-GAF: Scalies are fine too?

.......why?

Same reason as people like to play video games - it's fun :D

Of course, it's a general response. Much like video games has its creepy people, so does furries, and any fandom in particular.

I think that depends on what you mean by "furry fetish people." If you're talking about people who take it to the extreme, like having sex in fursuits and everything, then sure, they're probably in the minority. But I don't believe for one second that the majority of furries, or at least a very significant percentage of furries, don't have any kind of sexual interest in the furry fandom at all. I'm pretty sure most of us do in some way, as small as it may be—and that's perfectly normal, because sex is normal, and furries like sex, too, lol. It's normal for people to sexualize the things we like sometimes. Fetishes are normal; most people have them to some extent, even if they won't admit it. We all have our own sexual interests. Some people take things to the extreme, of course, and those people don't represent the entire community, but I highly doubt that most of the community isn't turned on by furry art, etc., in any way. If you like porn at all, and if you like furry art, chances are you'll probably be fond of furry porn as well. =P But it's no crazier than many of the other fetishes out there. It's actually pretty mild compared to many others, lol.

Alright, everyones attention please!

So, with the new thread, we want statements from you answering the simple question:

What does "furry" mean to you?

Simple enough right? We're looking for a 1 or 2 sentence answer from as many people as possible. Whether it be "fursuiting with my friends" or "sharing beautiful artwork" or "porn!", we'd love to hear it. And don't over think it, just say what comes to you.

Thanks in advance everyone!

edit: oh, and ways to give it. You can either just quote this post in this thread, or if you'd like to be anonymous just send me a PM. And if you're a lurker without an account, join the irc and pm me.

"Beeing a Furry means for me to talk and have fun with people who share the same interests like I have. Furries are the kindest people on earth and it always makes me happy to talk with them!"

(if there are any typos or something in it pls feel free to change it ^^")

Hmm I suppose I'd say "Being a Furry represents an appreciation of anthropomorphism in any of its various forms. It also means you're a super cool person."

In addition to what was stated above, I enjoy the creativity of the community when it comes to the art. It's great to see the many different visions and ideas when it comes to anthropomorphizing different creatures.

I honestly find it annoying that "furry" is being referred to the anthropomorphic characters rather than "anthro". And for me, furry is just enjoying anthro art.

What does "furry" mean to you?

Bluntly, I've always wanted to be an animal. It's something I regard as central to my identity. (I'm tempted to call this "totemism" but I don't know whether that's really accurate.) Anyway, if I say to somebody "I'm a furry," that's what I'm referring to. I like anthropomorphic art too, though, obviously.

I've noticed there's always a lot of folks with those feelings floating around the edges of the furry fandom. I think it's okay not to worry too much about naming it. In a sense, that can avoid one getting sucked into some of the groups in the fandom that have kind of... overbuilt, on such ideas.

Being a furry means appreciating anthropomorphic artwork and other creative endeavours that focus on the expression of an animalistic spirit or form, and can go as far as personally identifying with these creations and characters.

Cuz animals are super cool!
