Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut Hands On

I got to preview this at comic con the other week, thought my fellow obsessive Wii U gaf would appreciate this as I can't seem to find any other hands on articles elsewhere online. Feel free to hit me with any questions about my time with the game.

My only real complaint is the lack of AA, but hopefully they'll address that before its released.

I have no idea why I'm actually interested in playing games I've already beaten with the Upad, but I am.

This may not sound like a particularly mindblowing new addition, but having this secondary real time map in the palm of your hands adds a whole new layer of tactical opportunity. This surprisingly intuitive map is one of the best implementations of a map system I have seen on the Wii U to date, and lends itself perfectly to a stealthy or non-lethal approach to a mission. I quickly found myself relying on the gamepad to show me which way enemies were walking and facing and then using their locations to carefully plan and execute some seriously satisfying silent takedowns.

Why would looking down, that is, taking my eyes completely off the TV be a good idea? A tactical map is precisely the kind of thing you want in a Heads-Up Display!

Trust me, it works well. I found myself holding the gamepad out in front of me so it would only be the slightest of glances, you can see the entire map and track the movement of non visible enemies. Odd at first but very quickly becomes instinctive and vital to the experience.

Can you turn off the dumb sniper WiiU mode? I really dislike that and it sounds from your preview you did too.

Also, should we expect AA before release? Is that something developer's usually put in late in development? That's disappointing news.

I've added emphasis. This doesn't sound comfortable. Imagine doing that for hours.

Obviously I haven't had a long session on it but it felt fine to me, regardless of what position you hold the gamepad in I reckon it'll quickly become second nature. Also yes, I have played the original, and I felt like the map really did add something to the experience.

Shoot off an email to Straight Right and mention to them the lack of AA and the slowdown, they have an email address on their site, and a Facebook page to boot.

I can't remember the last time that a game this late in development had any significant performance or IQ improvements from its hands-on previews.

Imagining what it would feel like and actually doing it are two completely different things. I've had 5-6 hour ZombiU sessions and looking back and forth between the gamepad and TV was practically the same as on my 3DS/DS. Its not like your gonna be holding up the pad continuously, your not really looking down at the pad more so your bring the pad up to eye level.

I absolutely hate onscreen maps I have to pause to open up, so I welcome that change. Was never interested in this game to begin with, but I'll see how it turns out. Gamepad seems like a good fit for technology themed games.

Overhauling the boss battles would do that I'd think.

The fact it's a game worth replaying probably helps too, I'm actually kind of excited for the PS+ release, whereas Sleeping Dogs is unbeaten on PC and I'd probably just keep that there.

Does he still need to eat a candy bar every time he punches someone?

Definitely worth playing Deus ex on one of the platforms, really great game. Definitely, I really hope they nail the gamepad support in Watch Dogs.

I'm deffo gonna buy this IF......the framerate was ok...how was the framerate?

also is it guaranteed to have a visual upgrade? is this something the devs have commented on?

Why not try it before you bash it? I don't understand people so resistant to change. If it sucks, it sucks, but at least give it a shot.

Yep, it was in all the press releases etc.Dropped occassionally, but overall not bad. As I said, I'm hoping the framerate and AA will be improved before release.

I really hope they don't try to release this at $60 considering it's free on PSN+ and has been really cheap on Steam. At least launch it at $40, although $20 would be better.

In regards to holding the Gamepad so that you only have to minimally glance at it while looking at the television: I put a couple of pillows on my lap when I play games like this. The Gamepad sits in it's stand on top of the pillows and I can see both screens. I know it sounds stupid, but it's very comfortable and enhances my gameplay experience.

I already have this on PC due to a Steam sale. Still, it's tempting to pick this one up.

I wish we had a timeline on these demo builds, so we could know if people were playing the same demo they had at PAX months ago. The frame rate hiccups were blamed on being an early build at the time, and I don't know if the demo has been updated since.
