Xbox One - Help Spread the Word

Why would anyone get paid to make 10 posts on a forum and be immediately banned, which apparently some of you are really rooting for/expecting. God forbid anyone offer a dissenting opinion.
Are you suggesting that there haven't been many shills here specifically paid to do just that over the years?

Because you would be wrong.

Microsoft has now come out in the open and stood behind what we all feared. There's no confusion left but in the tiniest nuances of this story: they are gunning for us as consumers, and it's either we stop it now or this industry radically changes into something not worth saving (if it even survives at all anyway).

If this not worth a boycott, absolutely no bit of game news would ever warrant such. If this is not worth a boycott, then we might as well all just go home and allow any business to take advantage of us simply because we don't want to put in the effort to push back. If this is not worth a boycott, then we never really loved games in the first place and this hobby of ours needs to go down in flames anyway.

I say, if this is not worth a boycott, then nothing in this industry ever would be.

Sony is with us!

Lower income families shouldn't be buying $400+ video game boxes. $100-150 Wii/Xbox/PS3 should be where their money should go if at all.

I love your avatar
Goddamn it, they BETTER remember!
, but this type of thought process infuriates me.

A lower income person having access to this console or any other is none of your business. Shame on you for dictating how people should spend their money.

You mean poverty levels, right? Then yes, they've got bigger problems to worry about than buying a several hundred dollar system. Like, where the fuck is dinner coming from tonight.

It kinda just is.

I dunno, clearly I'm not in the target demographic to "get" the righteous indignation going on about this. To me it's simple: you want it, buy it; you don't, then don't. MS can invent whatever kind of weirdo vision they want and consumers can either buy in to it or not... nobody's dying, gaming isn't being ruined, nobody's going to bring the industry to its knees. MS isn't violating anyone's "rights": they are setting terms and conditions, now it's your move.

Educating people about it, talking about it like grownups... okay, cool. Ranting like MS is Monsanto and actively trying to evangelize not buying a console with sketchy facts seems silly.

No they can't. Microsoft's terms and conditions do not override laws. The purpose of the thread is to make people fully aware of the infringements on consumer rights. There is nothing wrong with consumers taking a stand to a product that they deem unsatisfactory for whatever reason.

Really. Really?

"Lower income families should never have fun. They should above all else never manage to save any money at all, and if they do that money be used for a hands-n-feet-n-dirt struggle to survive. Only a hard scrabble 24 hours a day 7 days a week is the appropriate life for a low income family."

The only "stand" you need to take is not purchasing it. Calling people out and insulting those who are well aware of the drawbacks and still want one just makes you seem like a bunch of crazy kooks.

so its just like the 360 and ps3?

Well, that's not true. Why would you even say that? 360 Kinect isn't mandatory with the system, it can be played offline indefinitely and there are zero restrictions on used games.

I can't even fathom why you'd say that.

But you, on the other "side" are completely just with the name calling and insulting, right?

So if Sony has equivalent DRM (obviously excluding the 24 hour online check-in bullshit), you won't buy a PS4 either?

Hell the fuck no I won't. If I'm going to be burdened with intrusive DRM and online checks then I might as well move back to PC gaming anyway. I sell most all of my console games on eBay and the Amazon marketplace. That's one of the biggest benefits of console gaming to me, and it helps justify the high game prices. Xbox One would taking away my ability to do that, so fuck the Xbox One.

And 99% of them have the balls to have a fridge, too!

It won't because this is a closed marketplace with no competition. Don't delude yourself into thinking it's anything different.

We boycott BOTH the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and build gaming PCs.

"Fuck DRM! Buy gaming PCs!"

"Wait, DRM is already highly prevalent on PC?"

"Fuck it... At least I get to game bro!"

Some people seem to be OK with a company restricting their rights to property, forcing daily check ups to prove you're all legal and approved, and having a camera and mic that is always on in their living room?

Sure, fine, opinions and all.

What I don't understand is why it's 'laughable, drama, insignificant' to try and inform more people about this, when it's such a big turn in gaming industry's policies and actions, and when it's essentially hidden behind carefully crafted walls of PR speak for the casual consumer.

What I also don't understand is how such a monumental point for the industry should be considered unimportant according to some people, and all those cheesy comparisons to 'more important things in the world'.
Well obviously there are more important stuff going on, guess what, this is a gaming forum and this is hot news for the gaming world.

Except, you know. You can't play XBLA games (and if PS4 follows suit) that you bought last year on the new hardware. If I upgrade my video card, I can still buy Steam/Origin/Amazon games I bought last year on the new hardware.

Lower income families can't afford top tier PC's. Are you throwing a shitfest over the fact that they have to run games on low settings? No.
Developers have already stated that they will continue to support PS3 and Xbox360.

There are certain devices that are well not targeted to everyone. Consider yourself one of those demographics the Xbox is not targeting. Why the rage?

I want the point of entry for consoles to be friendly to consumers who have a low income, period. That includes PS4 and Xbox One. I want a low income family to be able to save up $400 and then spend their time renting games if they so choose, as a way to budget entertainment for their family.

Yes, I want all that. That's such a HUUUGE request, it's only what we've been doing since this game industry fucking started!

I don't think it's any of that. I just think it's inefficient since consumers will find out sooner or later the bad experiences involved with the system. Word of mouth should take care of everything.

To me developing a DOS attack on launch day is a much more efficient way of having more people boycott the system.

The difference with PC gaming (Steam in particular) is that you can play offline for up to a month, some games even longer than that. You don't have to worry about your games not working some day when the "cloud" goes down.

Even then, I won't be happy. If Sony has similar bullshit on the PS4 this will be me:

This all getting a little too much for me I think, people aren't this impassioned about the NSA spying on everyone. MS isn't hiding what they plan on doing, and no one is being forced to buy anything. Nobody's rights are being violated.

Which was the entire point of making the easy to read list. I see lots of people who were unaware of what the changes were. They were never going to go on xbox.com and try to decipher the PR speak.

"Here is what you have now. He is what's different."

Enjoy the DRM all you want, but informing people is not a bad thing.

I feel that the NSA stuff might have caused some of the anger in this thread. Truthfully, both are awful, but the NSA stuff is far, far worse.

I work with the low poverty line people, so yeah. Why don't you take your head out of the sand? Sometimes so extra money comes their way, and they can get their kids something nice for xmas, how about that? Maybe getting a used console? Maybe something down the line when prices come down, ever thought about that? How the hell are they going to play their games that they would probably rent? Or buy used? Sometimes they don't have internet, but they do have a console, because that's all they can afford to play with, because sometimes they do get a little extra. So yeah.

He's angry that someone is saying that lower income families shouldn't be able to enjoy something that is possible for them to save up for.

We want people to know about this information... So they won't buy it.

Buy a Wii.
Buy an Xbox360 Arcade.
Buy a PS3.

There are still options.

And seriously, i remember when shit came out last gen, I couldn't afford it right off the bat. Did I bitch like this? No. I saved my god damn money.

It's funny, actually. Sony and MS both have this problem.

Indie PC scene is doing fine.

Yeah for anyone thinking they will go with Sony due to this. Sony has a LONG history of trying to lock consumers into their own technology. Minidiscs, memory cards, etc. I would not expect Sony to be a savior here.

I beat all the games I buy. As a result I have exactly one of the 20 or so XBLA games I've purchased on my hard drive.

It's just funny people are threatening to not purchase a Microsoft product because of DRM and will instead go to another Microsoft product with restrictive DRM.

I've had a sensible chuckle over the whole situation.

WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE SAYING NEEDS TO STILL HAPPEN!

And once they save up their goddamn money, they should be able to enjoy games in a budget-conscious environment where renting, borrowing and lending is possible. How fucking difficult is that to understand? It dramatically impacts low income families.

The people saying fuck everyone who buys an xbox one, that is not normal. The people acting microsoft is waging some kind of war on videogames, that is not normal.

Digital media is the inevitable future, it just is.... Microsoft is bridging the gap for now by offering physical discs (which are basically just a digital pass), if Sony is smart they will do something similar, but I cant imagine a generation beyond this next one requiring discs.

Video games are expensive, which is why people get cheap used games.

Or maybe even like, freely lend a game to a friend, who might play it for a month or two before giving it back.

Perhaps rent a few video games.

But it seems those days are dwindling.

Except, once again, it's not as restrictive. Not even close. And Steam is available on non MS systems now, too. Not sure about Amazon.

There is nothing sensible about chuckling at something you're not quite understanding. That's just sort of arrogance.
