The original campaign and heroic / iron challenges never gets too too hard, even on the hard setting (that is for clearing every level perfectly). It starts out really easy then slowly ramps up, with the most challenging parts of the original game being some of the heroic and iron challenge levels.

The extra levels that unlock after clearing the campaign are an order of magnitude more difficult, and will likely wreck you many times over. You'll need to get all those stars you're missing for a full set of upgrades to even stand a chance later on.

Oooh there are extra levels after the campaign? Sounds good. And good to know there's incentive to go back and three star levels.

So, why didnt anyone tell me that UMK3 is some weird 2.5d remake of the original game and there is no option for the original sprites/backgrounds? It was only $1 but it sucks to play this game with ps2 level 3d instead of the sweet sprites from the original game : /

A shot of Game Center in iOS 7:

A "turns" tab for all of your games seems really useful. Also, hundreds of games in one folder if you'd like. Though it did seem like a lot of swiping through pages of icons without knowing what's actually in the folder.

Just saw that a sequel to Kingdom Rush came out. Amazing! My only complaint is that some of the levels are pretty difficult (almost impossible) even on Casual difficulty.

From WWDC Platforms Kickoff (not the keynote), Crytek demonstrates (unannounced?) iPhone game running with game controller.

Nice. What are your initial thoughts on 7?

Super smooth, feels like I'm using a new phone, or a slick jailbreak skin with tons of new features. :)

It's currently quite crash prone though and there's some missing animations occasionally (folders just appear when tapped if they're in the dock instead of being zoomed into for example).
The animated/sliding background freaks out all over the place occasionally as well.

I love that folders now have pages (we need to go deeper!) but I'm not sure I like the 3x3 restriction on said pages, looks fucking slick but I liked the larger size of iOS6.

This is actually great news, though I doubt Apple will actually bother releasing their own pad, given their attitude towards games (though it seems like it's changing). Logitech would definitely make something nice - I just want something I can take off easily when I'm done playing and maybe has a battery pack.

Finally, that should make some existing games finally fully playable (GTA, Jet Set Radio, all dem virtual joystick games really) and maybe for some exciting game announcements!

On a 5 here.

Game Center is pretty nice looking now.

The bubbles move around a bit and can be tapped to go to the sections directly (think they grow in size depending on what they contain too).

Turns is completely blank at the moment (unsurprisingly), the rest is pretty much white flat whites/blues.

Any videos of that Crytek game? I'd love to see that!

If you have the WWDC app and you register your Apple ID for free developer credentials, you can see the "Platforms State of the Union" video. It is around the 40-45 minute mark if I remember correctly.

Not actually that important
I hate how iOS 7 looks from the little I've seen (Game Center/AppStore). So lifeless and barren. I'm all for minimalism but it has to b sleek and stylish.
They should have asked Tunesmith to design the freakin' layout/graphical style.

:(

Just got a new iPad are there any good RTS games out there that aren't tower defence games? More like age of empires type style?

Amoebattle is IMHO the best RTS you'll find for the platform. Also critically acclaimed.

More Starcraft than AoE maybe.

I'm thinking of keeping the old GC esque layout for the leaderboard stuff going forward, maybe lift out the felt pattern. Anyway I'm throwing around some ideas. :)

Gamebook fans should know that Tin Man Games have just released Forest of Doom.

It's not one I particularly remember being a standout in the Final Fantasy series but something that interested me is that they now give an option to revert back to the original book design and artwork. Not sure if they did this before, but it is a big deal for me as a lot of the charm is lost with the horrible artwork that Tin Man use.

So it might be something for Sorcery! fans to try out as they wait for the second part.

Edit: It seems like the classic artwork was available in their earlier conversions. Feel like an idiot for not noticing!

Some more on controllers and iOS7 game changes:

The new Game Controller framework, added in iOS 7 and OS X v10.9, makes it easy to find controllers connected to a Mac or iOS device. Once discovered, your game reads control inputs as part of its normal gameplay. There are three kinds of controllers available:

-A standard form-fitting controller: An iOS device sits inside the controller and the player can access both the iOS device’s screen and the controller elements.
-An extended form-fitting controller: An iOS device sits inside the controller and the player can access both the iOS device’s screen and the controller elements.
-An extended wireless controller: A controller that wirelessly connects to an iOS device or Mac.

A few other things Apple announced is coming in iOS 7 but didn’t show off in detail: Secure game scores, Authenticated Game Center players, new turn-based game modes, and ranking-style leaderboards.

This news is even making me consider if I should invest in a new iPhone (currently 4) or iPad (currently 2) for gaming. I think right now iPad is far better for gaming, but this could change if I could use a controller that fits on the iPhone, as opposed to a wireless controller which I probably wouldn't use as much.

Well, maybe logitech will come up with a fitting type of controller for iPad too.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I hope you guys like new-age, tacky bubbles better than green felt:
