Size Mattters (XB1 vs PS4)

Technically how is this possible? If the xbone and ps4 have similar power how can the ps4 be this much smaller? Also, should the ps4 be louder or quieter because of the size? I guess it depends on what size fans are in there. The back looks like it's all exhaust so I'm hoping it is quieter than the slim ps3 which still whirs up a bit even just to watch netflix.

The PS4 is probably louder but Microsoft literally picked parts to build a PC. I mean, just look at the Wired pictures of their Xbox One internals. You've got a standard drive, any ordinary low profile cooler, and even a hard drive connected to something with a SATA cable or similar.

Wow, didn't realize it was that small.

Glad that the head of design and the team got the much deserved props on stage during the E3 conference.

No one's saying you don't, but disc drive issues and the YLOD are still things that exist. They're not as severe or widespread as the RROD, obviously, but they're still hardware issues that can be traced back to the console's design on some level.

I hear ya. I also had a first generation PS1. After awhile only worked upside down.

I'm still not sure where I'm going to put all these systems... I am running on barely any space at this point...

I think one of these is going to have to sit on the floor... and I'm not exactly pumped about that.

stand it up?

Seems accurate, good job.

You literally can't even tell that that is where the PS4 disc is supposed to go...

To be honest, this is no surprise to me. Microsoft is primarily a Software company - not a Hardware company - and they don't even do that particularly well.

the only thing i use my xbox for at the moment is HBO Go. I could retire that once this comes out (have to finish up Forza Horizon and XCOM first)

I'll take smaller over larger, assuming the thermal envelope isn't impacted. Ultimately though, it wouldn't impact my purchasing decision one iota. I'm going to play it, not juggle the fucking things.

Now I understand why that image doesn't make sense to me. It's smaller in volumne and in width, but the PS4 is longer than wide.

Yes you can, just look at the original pic.

This may seem minor, but this means they can pack more in a given shipment and fit more on a retail shelf. It marginally lowers their cost in a lot of ways.

Let's wait and see how both of them work in practice. The PS4 looks great and I love the small form factor, but I'm skeptical of overheating issues with a box that small (which undoubtedly influenced Microsoft's design decision). After last gen with BOTH PS3 and 360, I don't think anyone can assume the hardware is going to be rock solid.

I wonder if the size of the Xbox One is indicative of it being rushed. Like, they didn't have time to design it for a smaller case, said screw it, and just made it huge.

On PS4 noise concerns: Do we have approximate TDP totals for the new consoles yet? They should be a good bit lower than the launch versions of the 360 and PS3, considering they both have what are essentially laptop CPUs compared to Xenon and Cell being relatively hot and power-hungry. I'd also think the SoC design would simplify the cooling setup a bit.

This doesn't surprise me, Sony is primarily a hardware company so their hardware is going to be more erm "mature" than Microsofts. You just need to look at the circuit board comparison between the PS3 and 360 to appreciate that Sony excel in this area :-

So it doesn't surprise me that Sony has managed to pack more powerful hardware into a smaller box AND get the power supply in there too.

Edit: I got what I wanted before I even asked for it. Super-duper.

Looks like Xbone is bigger than 2 Wii Us? Wait how the hell do you pluralize Wii U?

Those red boxes aren't anywhere close to the same size.

The Xbox's red box should be smaller. If you shrink the red box down to where the actual disk slot is, rather than including the inward slopes, its the same size as the PS4's box.

Basically. The biggest heat generator will be the GPU and you've seen reference coolers on mid range GPUs. Since the CPU and GPU are all on the same chip, you can just slap a slab of copper and aluminium on the APU and be done with it, instead of dealing with heatpipes and all that bullshit.

This is incredible! Much smaller than I had ever anticipated.

And Jesus @ Xbone. Gigantic, disastrous box

From the other views, it seems the PS4's length is more than its height, so the comparison image really puts the PS4 in the best light. But the PS4's planform area is still smaller than Xbone's, and it's not as wide.
