Xbox One to only work in certain countries at launch

Xbone keeps giving...

I'm from Croatia.

Here's what I had to endure so far on the X360:

- no official support and warranty from MS
- as far as MS is concerned, X360 doesn't exist here which translates *REALLY WELL* to retail and overall product support *fist shake*
- I have a UK-based XBL account - everything works expect I can't buy many games and DLC without using a VPN

.
.
.
IMAGE how well Xbone will work here.

I'm reading this correctly, I'm not sure local retailers will even import it

Instead of expanding the list of countries where MS officially supports its countries they do...THIS. Thanks very fucking much Mr. Phil Harrison - what a load of good you did for Europe. But as long as you're happy with your price I guess everything else doesn't matter.

MS doing everything they can to not succeed this gen. There must be an evil masterplan behind all this.

I've been sitting here trying to figure out what Microsoft's endgame is and it's migraine inducing. Unless their logic is simply to try to win out North America (and to a lesser extent the UK) then there is no explanation for what they are trying to do. I mean I can understand giving up on Japan, but they might as well not even launch in Asia at all if they best they can do is late '14.

Per Wikipedia (via an MS press release) the OG Xbox sold ~24 million units at last count. I'm beginning to think the X1 will be doing good to get to that number.

Wow, I never even thought about the scenario of Xbone not even working in certain countries because of mandatory internet DRM.

Crazy. lol

Something is up here. It's just one gigantic act of stupidity after another. I mean, MS does some really stupid things, but you mean to tell me not even once, one person at a board meeting said "wow, this is stupid"? And if nobody said this once then it's time they go through and fire everyone there for hurting stock holders.

Nice, all those US service members stationed in Japan won't get to play their Xbox One that they purchased at their local Exchange.

Good going MS.

Dear Microsoft,

Fortunately, you have over $70B in cash and like equivalents on your balance sheet. The Xbox One seems like a bad dream, and you can make it one by cutting your losses now and writing off this debacle.

Sincerely,

Concerned Shareholders

People put up with enourmous amounts of BS. I can see the youtube videos in the future of people having tutorials on "how to change the IP and DNS of your Xbone" and "how to create fake live accounts from supported countries" and on and on.

Hopefully gamers have some sense of dignity and let this "thing" sit on shelves.

At least Sony is treating us from ex-YU as normal people :p

Yep. Sony is officially present here. Warranty, SKUs, games, accessories. Hell, even PSN and buying stuff in local currency.

WTF are you doing MS? o_O

MS keeps sending these clusterfucks day after day. The more I'm reading the more I think this is not a joke:

So wait, is it fully confirmed it's IP blocked? So even if someone imports, you can't create an account based on the US to play games?

Im pretty sure Xbone is going to do really well because North America is going to eat it up like a new Mcdonalds.

I'm reading this shit correctly, yep. IP blocking. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised.
Dem intellectual property rights, yo... :/

don't ask me for codes
No rich, small European countries like Iceland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Liechtenstein. (I suppose these might be able to connect to neigboring countries like Sweden and France?)
No Portugal or Poland.
No rich Middle Eastern countries like Israel, UAE, Bahrain.
No rich Asian countries like South Korea, and Japan.
No South Africa or Argentina.

Welp.

Poor Portugal. So close, yet so far away. Someone needs to update that picture of the WiiU in the window and replace it with the Portuguese flag.

Wow! MS just effectively gave Sony/Nintendo Japan. Add to the fact that the only platform you will be able to get games like KH3 and FFXV will be on PS4, it's going to be a battle between Sony and Nintendo.

This is so funny. So even if you do have internet on holiday or are working on a short project overseas, you just won't be able to play your on your €500 VCR?

Woohoo! Belgium is on there! So I can make the choice myself not to buy this POS! :D

I wonder if they will dare to make everything country specific.
Since I order 90% from the UK (the rest from Japan), locking out games from another country on the same continent would make me even less likely to get this system even if they would backtrack on all the other shit that's keeping me from buying it in the first place.

Earlier this year official Sony Poland Facebook stated that there are over 500k PS3s in Poland. If you count in PS2s and other Sony consoles, the number must be well over 1M. When I had a 360, my friends' list was empty because I didn't know anybody to put on it. I guess it all depends on where you live and how old you are.

What an irony. I've just returned home after picking up TLOU Ellie Edition, all nicely published and translated, with professional actors doing voices for the game (I'll play in English anyway but I appreciate the effort). This happens with every single Sony game, also most multiplats. I remember my surprise when GT5 came with a nice book on cars, 200 pages. I work as a translator, I know how much it costs to translate, edit and print such a thing.

Microsoft never cared (neither does Nintendo), all they could offer were subtitles, even for Kinect games. They finally managed to bring XBL here 2 years ago. They sell MSP for horrendous prices. They probably think now that we don't have broadband and live in wooden boxes in the middle of the street. Well, my 500 euros is waiting for the PS4 and some launch games. I guess SCEP won't have a problem with taking it [insert appropriate takemymoney.gif].

Funny how my situation is completely opposite, my X360 friends' list is full while I only have a couple of people on my PSN :) Nevertheless I fully agree with you on that, out of the big three Sony seems to care about Poland and rest of the Eastern Europe the most and actually appreciate our money. Nintendo seems to just completely disregard our region altogether and Microsoft takes its sweet time to introduce their products and services here (we waited like what, 8 years for polish Live?)

Yeah, added :)

This whole console is such a clusterfuck.

This whole episode has gone far beyond Sony circa 2005/2006 now. I want it to fail so fucking badly because of their arrogance and distasteful policies, but I think they've got enough of a hold over the US market and maybe even the UK too to come out very well in these regions.

US region locks aren't too surprising at it has always been pretty much been the status quo on console (PS3 excluded). Region locking within a continent if I'm understanding this correctly is completely unprecedented and would be horrible for the non-UK countries in Europe. That said, I know others got screwed even harder by being excluded entirely.

Amazing that the one area (Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan) that has cheap, super fast, widely available internet (both mobile and fibre) is left out of the launch.

Yeah, unfortunately i see that as a likely outcome as well.

I'm gonna do my part by letting people know about microsoft's plans with the Xbox Juan to my friends, relatives, and i'll even take it to the digital social networks, hell if there were people out on launch date with banners alerting people about Juan i'd do it for free as well.

I guess it isn't entirely shocking since it's been a failure in Japan for two generations now, but I'm very surprised about the news of the delay there let alone the apparent decision to not even release it officially? That seems crazy to me.

So much of Europe isn't represented in that map..

MS must and will change these restrictions soon after the console release, if not I don't know... All of this seems so suicidal. Why do they hate themselves?

I realy don't understand what the fk is going on.MS is trying to kill xbox brand or what? What a fail. Is it possible that there isn't a single good point about this console?

I can understand restrictive TV and music related stuff.

But games and playing online, why restrict that? WHY????

Can someone explain this demented decision?

Batteries the CRISIS!
I guess I'm not surprised that Microsoft is pulling out of Japan, but it's still shocking to see. Hell, all the gray on that whole map is shocking to see.

Japan not being there is crazy!

How can any Japanese company support that?

dat sweet American cash.

I hope everyone in those excluded countries boycott EACH and EVERY Microsoft product from now on. This is how this company treats their customers. Do you really want to reward this kind of company with your hard-earned money? Vote with your wallet!

Region Lock
DRM
No game sharing
Only allow usage on activated country

Sounds like Microsoft is trying to be Apple of gaming industry. Unfortunately that model won't work here!
