Xbox One to only work in certain countries at launch

Isn't the release date for Asia a year after the rest of the world though? Doesn't sound commited to me. tbh I wouldn't expect them to be after the 360 bombed.

I just read taiwan newspaper yesterday and it said Asia version coming 2014 chinese new year(around 2014 Feb/March)
But i don't think they confirmed now, since back in 2005,they announced 360 coming to Asia "2006 some time" at 2005 September, then 2005 December, they finally announce Asia 360 will release at 2006 March

MS is shooting their own feet off with such policies...

People who import the console would not be able to play it unless their country becomes supported.

Below is a quote from MS regarding the release of the Xbox One is Asia

Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft Asia exec Alan Bowman called the company’s approach to the continent a “staged approach”, and confirmed Xbox One for release in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and India around late 2014.

So ms will not sell this in japan? Its headache and a waste of time. They deserve to not get this. Sony is now ms in japan selling games for prices beyond belief. Its getting sadder and sadder...

I'm sure it will launch in Japan next year. Can't see it selling any better than the 360 there though, maybe significantly worse due to DRM policies that won't go down well there and the gulf in price with PS4.

I'm sure they will release it but probably to much less fanfare than they are giving the rest of the world. They will know that Sony and Nintendo have the Japanese market but won't want to lose face by not releasing there at all

http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/11/4418144/xbox-one-launch-in-asia-late-2014

Update: Microsoft is refusing to comment on specifics. "In the coming year Xbox One will continue to roll out around the world. Stay tuned for details about future markets and timings," says a Microsoft spokesperson.

I'm sorry but I'm more inclined to believe the Microsoft Asia exec than a nameless MS spokesperson.

I don't even know where did he said late 2014 other than title and first few line,WSJ did not have any quote about that

And i believe it won't be that late according 360 Asia release date and taiwan newspaper report

I just chat with Xbox support, seems they very confident about the region thing unlike twitter support

Sandra: Thank you for contacting Xbox Chat Support. My name is Sandra and I will be assisting you today. Please give me a minute to check your issue.
Sandra: Hi there.
Sandra: Can I have your name please?

Lee: Oh hi
Lee: call me Lee
Lee: I wanna ask something about Xbox One region specification.

Sandra: Oh his there Lee. How are you today?
Sandra: And yes, go ahead please.

Lee: Microsoft has posted the distribution region here http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/pre-order-xbox-one/disclaimer and i wanna know can i import the console and games from US and play it in Hong Kong

Sandra: Definitely you can Lee. What xbox one require is just an internet connection that is available 24/7. That means that you just have to have an internet connection of your own. Just like the previous consoles, there are countries that they are not officially sold but the console still works there.

Lee: So,my case is-Xbox One console:US,game:US region,account:US XBOX LIVE account,where i located:Hong Kong
Lee: And Microsoft won't block my ip,right?

Sandra: No not at all since Live and Gold services are both available in Hong Kong. Just like the older consoles Lee, it is not officially sold or distributed to a lot of countries because of the numbers of users that are few but the console still works as long as Live service is available to that country.

Lee: So the Xbox Live service for Xbox One will just like Xbox 360

Sandra: That is right. Only the platform changes but everything pretty much is the same.

Lee: Ok,thanks for your help
Lee: No more question from me,so bye and have a nice day :)

Sandra: Alright then. See you on Live soon Lee. You take care, okay?
Sandra: :)

Ah cheers man. Would be good to see something official.

If this is the case then problem solved. Ill move from AUS to UAE so i can have my UAE credit card if i need something purchased, then ill get a UK Xbox at launch and sign up to the existing UAE server - actually..i hope that works!

Well if the live service not in your country,it may really not work, but also still just like 360,you can login in let's say someone live in China but they can use HK XBL to play games

yes i know that, but his question was about this exact situation, account: us, location: hk. and the answer is yes only due to live presented in hk. so i think the 360 possibility ended here.

Seriously, why isn't the press all over this? Between Don Mattrick's comment and this there's (potentially) a huge story, certainly more important than how many QTEs are in Ryse.

Well since he said "That is right. Only the platform changes but everything pretty much is the same."

I would say they're not trying to block the ip even live service not in your country yet?

Btw i think chat supporters get the memo about this region issue in internet,so they giving clear answer to anyone questioned about this(if my guess is right then it just misunderstand like many one hopes)

I'm incredibly puzzled by just about everything Microsoft is doing with the Xbone, it doesn't seem sane.

I'm baffled too. While a fraction of their strategy is some what - generously - understandable, most probably because of long standing negotiations and certification authentication in certain markets, a majority - or rather the rest - is questionable, illogical and not healthy for their corporation's interests.

So in the end, who is correct? Microsoft or their Live support? Fucking LOL. Would be nice if Mattrick cleared this up.

That's what is most unbelievable to me. Not any of this bullshit, but that MS doesn't say anything about it. Either this is not true, in which case they should speak up, or it is and they are trying to figure a way to spin it, or they just don't know what the fuck they are doing. None of them speaks well for their management.

Hmm there's a nice get-out in there "so long as Live is available in that country" - personally I would be very careful about buying the console in the non-listed territories until there is concrete evidence they will work.

Different MS people give different answers around all this stuff (and DRM) and I figure you're taking a risk assuming one is right vs another because the answer is the one you want to hear.

It's simply clear as Mud where/what connection circumstances the console will/won't work.

Guys, if your country isn't in that list just don't give Microsoft your money

They obviously don't give a crap about their customers, they just think they have the superior system and that everyone will want it

Ah, pooe Basques; those in San Sebastian; Northern Ireland; and isolated certain parts of Mother Russia...

Seems like a play to divide and conquer regions into different countries; and thus markets and price fixing.
