Nintendo Direct E3 2013 Presentation

I'll chime in.

1. Complete overhaul of the Wii U operating system. The "upgrade" helped, but it's still shit in a box.

2. Account-based systems for the Wii U.

3. Stop IP whoring. Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario.

4. If you're going to IP whore, don't take a game designed for a handheld and push it out as your next big mainline Mario title. There is ZERO fucking excuse for this Super Mario World U piece of shit to even exist. Mario Galaxy was a testament that in the right hands, Mario can be more than just the same old shit over and over.

5. Franchise fatigue is absolutely surging. It's time to put some franchises to rest for a while (Mario Kart), and shuffle some IPs to completely different people (Zelda).

6. Fill the void in the lineup. Wii Sports U with full online functionality including leaderboards should have been a day one title. As of now, it still doesn't even fucking exist, which is a goddamn shame because Wii Sports was one of the best games ever created.

7. Stop with the "please understand" shit. Play your fucking cards when it MATTERS (ie E3). That is, if they even have any cards to play which I am doubting at this point.

8. Fire Iwata and Miyamoto.

There's only like, 2 Mario IPs there, and Mario itself is broad - this is like the second time 3D World is used.

Also, you imply World will ply like Land. So far they're pimping it up as SMB2 USA with platforming than anything else. I remember the reactions before when people were groaning with NSMBWii... until it was shown to be a really good platformer.

And sequel fatigue? Outside of Mario, most of the games shown barely had sequels, one being only just a fresh sequel even!

I think that's Yusuke Hashimoto, Game Designer of Bayonetta 2
Miyamoto looks so proud and Kamiya just "Fu** hope this is over soon I need my daily dose of Twitter!".

Dissapointed. I don´t think I had high expectations. The part I was dissapointed with:

I was expecting a 3D Mario that would have the the wow factor or effort as with the Galaxy games and not what felt like a huge step down from the Galaxy games(I thought it was a 3DS game for the first few seconds). For the record I would be just as dissapointed if they had done another Galaxy game.

Retros game - I was expecting a Metroid, Star Fox or a new IP. Not another DKCR. I loved DKCR and I will probably get this, but the timing feels so wrong. There is already a NSMB, NSLU and the upcoming Mario World. Why can´t Retro work on something else than another platform game? Some diversity would be nice, Nintendo.

Overall in regards to Wii U, I think Nintendo is using the "safe" option a bit too much and they have gone lazy or run out of ideas in my opinion.
This is suppose to be a new console. Nintendo has in the past history released games that felt new, fresh and really took advantage of the new hardware(control and console) they have. I want a new Mario, Metroid and Zelda, but I don´t want rehashes. And I don´t think rehashes will appeal as much for the general public either. I think that going the "safe" route only as they have so far, is a bigger risk than coming with something new, and if they continue like this it will be the downfall of Wii U.
Also, was surprised there was no new Wii Sports like game for the casual crowd. Maybe later, I guess.

Having said that, I will probably still buy a Wii U as I love platform games and I can´t get that on any other console. I was going to buy one after E3, but will wait until at least DKCR has released. Hopefully Pikmin 3 and TW101 has delivered the goods by than.
EDIT: Mario Kart looked much better than I expected. Did not buy for Wii, but might buy this one.

My impressions:

- Starting with Pokémon was cool. They got a few news out like the Fairy type, two Pokémon and a few attacks. Pokémon-Amie looks pretty stupid. *puts tinfoilhat on* It looks like they're trying to introduce this Tamagochi-like thing so people go with the digital version.

- Super Mario 3D World looked pretty good and they finally made characters that control differently. Cat powerup and all the returning enemies and dinosaurs are pretty awesome. I'm sure I will have a lot of fun playing this with my brother. On the other hand I'm a bit disappointed that it's borrowing this much from 3D Land. It was great on 3DS but I would have preferred a Galaxy-style game with a less fixed camera.

- Mario Kart 8 looked absolutely stunning. Not only are they approaching CG levels of graphics but the anti-gravity gameplay looks like tons of fun. It makes me somewhat regret my Mario Kart 7 purchase to be perfectly honest. I hope they will further rebalance the items and also introduce new ones.

- I couldn't believe that both Wii Party U and Wii Fit U were delayed. Ridiculous. Wii Party U looks like crap to boot.

- New Art Academy U is neat and it's so much unlike Nintendo to provide some of these tools for Miiverse. Looking forward to even better Miiverse drawings.

- Third-party line-up was just sad. I'll be only getting Shin Megami Tensei IV from that reel and I don't think there is a single third-party Wii U game that I'm looking forward to, except maybe Sonic Lost World. That never happened with the Wii.

- eShop stuff was decent but still not strong enough. Wouldn't have hurt to show some 3DS stuff either.

- Wind Waker HD looks neat. Could do with less bloom but whatever. Improvements to the sailing and pacing are very welcome but it's not the kind of game I'll run out to buy day one. I hope it's possible to hide the HUD on the GamePad though, looks cluttered as hell.

- The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 are currently my most anticipated Wii U games. Looks like the game that will finally justify the Game Pad to me and having the multiplayer confirmed is great as well. Bayonetta's design is great and it looks like it'll continue the crazy of the first entry. Might just be game of the show for me. Would be cool if they could get Bayonetta 1 on Wii U with some improvements as well (but I'd rather take a PC port). The extended trailers on Nintendo's Youtube account are even better.

- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is tied with 3D World for most disappointing announcement of the presentation. It's not because it's Donkey Kong or because it's 2D... it's because it's both. DKCR was a fantastic platformer, one of the best in years, but I wanted something different. I wouldn't have complained about a 3D Donkey Kong or a 2D something else. At least I know that it will be another great Nintendo game but still.

- Monolith's X had the second worst trailer music, right after Dark Souls 2, holy shit :lol The city looks a bit rough but everything else just blew my mind. Wonder how 4 player co-op will play out.

- Smash Bros. was expected but it still got me real good. They shouldn't have shown the Smash Bros. logo in the beginning but started with Animal Crossing, it'd have been the most amazing troll. Both versions look really good and my heart skipped a beat when Classic Mega Man appeared. Look, animations, attacks, he's simply perfect.

In conclusion, I found it a weak to decent showing saved by Platinum and the Smash trailer. I've seen better but also much worse like last year. They should have showed Zelda U as well but I guess that would have just hurt Wind Waker HD. I hope that the next few days will see a few smaller announcements, especially on 3DS.

The only game that got me excited was Mario Kart 8. The graphics were amazing. It was not the leap I was expecting.
All the other games were a disapointment due to the recycling the assets and hardly a big improvement. Super Mario 3D world is just not interesting to me as I didn't like 3D land that much. Donkey Kong is amazing but I expected a bigger leap with the graphics. It look amazing on the Wii but most of the games here just felt like HD conversions of Wii games. It looked like it most of the time. That CGI in the Smash trailer is what I would have wanted in order to get excited. It looks literally like Brawl with a few refinements and shaders. At least I will be excited for using Mega Man.

Personally, I loved it. I was giggling the whole time. I don't even like cats and even me LOVE neko-mario! The fact I'll be able to play a whole Mario game solo as Luigi from the start is also a big plus. MK8 looks awesome, there is WALUIGI! and wall racing that is mindbendingly awesome. Bayo2 looks crazy, Smash will be great, Villager looks very cool and megaman SOUNDS awesome. WiiFit Trainer is just marvelous in her grace. And they started with Pokemon, which is looking to be the best one yet! The Art Academy stuff will be awesome, much more than I was waiting for. And X looks like a great game to go over the fact we won't be getting FFXV. Looks gorgeous as hell.

The delays were pretty dull though. :/

Honestly as an objective spectactor the whole Direct reeked of "we're gradually making our way out of the console business so this will amend Wii U buyers until then."

As a Nintendo fan though... the three-hit combo of Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker HD this holiday season sounds friggin' sweet. The one good thing about Nintendo's endless rehashes and re-re-remakes is that I'm guaranteed to enjoy each iteration, so on a purely functional level I'd get a kick out of being a Wii U owner this holiday.

Did they do anything to make this Nintendo fan want to buckle down and buy a Wii U though? Not at all.

Honestly this is the first time where Nintendo has tried to entice me with quality first party games but still not convincing me to buy. It's kinda telling of where they are right now.

So it seems there isn't an E3 Nintendo booth thread so again:

They may have done a so-so ND, but their communication is really good (both pics are from their fb page).

I think the "we're on our way out!" narrative is overblown, but this Direct definitely represents Nintendo trying to double down on what works and eke every possible bit of profitability out of the Wii U.

Pretty so-so. For Mario, I would've preferred an epic single player experience, but I should've known after it was announced so soon. Incredible that Mario Kart looked better and was awesome all around. I never was a fan of the series, but this could convince me. Too bad about the long wait to the heavy-hitters. Luckily Pikmin and W101 are around the corner (the latter less so). And Sonic. And watch_dogs. Ok, not bad at all actually. :) The situation is better than the direct made you believe since some of the earlier announced stuff is coming soon. And my wish for Art Academy was granted, so that's also cool.

The whole lineup could've been much much greater, though. DK is cool with that camera angles (e.g. 60° down), Metroid would've been better. Nintendo is still understaffed for the long run it seems. How else could you explain that Wii Fit and Wii Party delay. I need to know X's release date so I can count the days.

lol, has anyone else read the "prophet's" so called apology post? it's funny seeing him claim he was right about pretty much everything but startropics. what an anus tart.

Of the big new Wii U games shown:

Donkey Kong Country 5
Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros 4 and 4 1/2
Mario 3D Land 2

The first Donkey Kong Country came out in 1994. That's five games in nearly 20 years (not counting re releases or whatever), last one was 3 years ago not counting 3DS remake (which was probably made to drum up interest in Tropical Freeze & quick and dirty money)
Super Mario Kart came out in 1992/3. That's 8 games in over 20 years, last handheld two years ago and console five years
The original SSB came out in 1999, about 15 years ago by the time the new one comes out, last one in 2008 (six years by the time 4 comes out)
3D World is not 3D Land 2, this is like arguing Galaxy and 64 are parts of different franchises

So much sequel fatigue guys!

X's trailer was one of this E3's big highlights for me. I wish they'd give us some details though.

And where's SMT X Fire Emblem? :(

Honestly out of Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart and Donkey Kong, Mario 3D World looks like the most fun buy. Yeah it's not what we wanted but it's still a great looking game and it feels very Super Mario 64. The multiplayer looks like such a blast too.

...what? I'm in his post history right now and he has no apology post unless it was deleted. His post history has his last post dating 6-10.

sorry, just got home. i something'd (googled) his name earlier just to see if he was spouting off nonsense anywhere else and as luck would have it, he posts over at gamespot under the same username:

http://www.gamespot.com/wii-u/forum/an-apology-to-the-gaming-community-66437003/

Hi everyone,

I figure this post is both necessary, and worth a try. This is Bh, the same guy referenced to in NeoGaf's "Neogaf Gets a Prophet thread". In that thread in the first post are some info I'd had written about regarding E3 and the Nintendo direct. Actual info, not just some fantasy. After two weeks of waiting, my moment of judgement arrived. Here are the facts regarding the outcome if that direct:

-I claimed the new 3D Mario has throwbacks to Mario 2 and that turned out to be CORRECT,
-Claimed Mario Kart is a souped up up port of 7 from the 3DS, literally. Aside from the gravity tracks, I was RIGHT.
-Claimed X would be shown and it indeed got a full trailer. RIGHT again.
-Claimed that during the Smash trailer you'd see a camera fly through an open area with silhouetted characters..although not exactly what I was told, that is EXACTLY what you see during the Mega Man reveal part. I also claimed mega man as a newcomer and was correct.

So that's 4 things correct so far. The problem turned out to be Retro's project, which I claimed was Star Trooics U. I promise everyone this: Up till Sunday night, that's what I was still being told and had in front of me. Donkey Kong came out of left field! My understanding was DK is coming but from a different offshoot of Nintendo and wouldn't be shown for a bit longer. But not from Retro. That's the truth. You don't hire all these people from Naughty Dog and Vigil just for Donkey Kong. I don't believe for a second DK is their big project. Honestly, who saw DK coming from Retro? Even that Peer guy had been saying new "brand" and then new IP. Nowhere was DK even a suggestion.

Even Francis at playeressence.com said what I wrote matched up heavily with what he heard and he'd back me up,

So despite me getting 4 of the 5 things I claimed correct, Gaf felt it necessary to ban me late yesterday. A perm ban. Needless to say, I'm not happy.

My reason for this post is twofold. One, to apologize to both Retro and the gaming community at large formally for getting my claim on Retro's project wrong. I 100 percent thought it was Star Tropics. Secondly, I have sent Gaf two emails appealing my perm ban because a perm is unjustified, especially given what I got right. I am asking for anyone with an active Gaf account to rally around me and help get back my account. 4 things right out of 5 doesn't deserve a perm. I am appealing for a very long temp ban instead which should be punishment enough. I made a mistake guys, I didn't see DK coming and am sorry for that. Please help a good person who always used his account appropriately get his account back. If a Gaffer wants to post my open letter to the community that's okay thanks for your time and hopefully support.

I'm sure someone else posted about it, but I just realized the lanyard foretold the conference.

and the e3 invites foretold the mario game to a t. i had a sneaky suspicion that the "gang" pic on them was for the new game but it was so generic to really have any weight.

That 'gang' pic also appeared on a special box that the Wii U came in at Aeon department stores in Japan on launch day in December.

They were trying to tell us the whole time!

If Nintendo can release Super Mario Universe(Galaxy/64psuedosequel), Metroid(byRetro), and Zelda all in HD before Wii U dissipates...they'll earn my forgiveness. Oh, and a Metroid for 3DS please.

3DWorld should not be on Wii U but 3DS.
I am stoked for DK:TF, but hope Retro has an awesome Metroid in store.
Super Luigi U and Wind Waker HD look fantastic.

Third party for me is Platinum's games and Rayman:Origins.

Don't care for Pikmin games.

So is everyone assuming Nintendo will announce a price cut for the Wii U later this fall in time for the holiday season and the release of the X1 and PS4? It seems to be the right time with the competition coming out and the Wii U finally having a decent line up.

My two cents: Iwata is a terrible presenter, hes fine in moderation but as a presenter of their biggest games to come its underwhelming. This is in part because Nintendo Direct is a very easy-going type of broadcast but Iwata just puts a damper on it even further. Looking past that, the developer directs are interesting but I wish they could be even longer with a better voiceover.

The games: 3D mario looked disappointing (should be a 3DS title) but I imagine Nintendos resources are at the max w/ development and they can't put together a proper 3D mario just yet by the end of the year. Retro working on DKC- underwhelming reveal, pretty much deja vu on DKCR being a surprise reveal. I hate to say but its just so dry and expected, nonetheless it'll be a great game I imagine. The rest of the stuff shown was great, and the games visually look sharp and polished (MK8 with that pixar shit).

Hyped for Smash too so theres that. I hope Nintendo does a conference next time as well as a Nintendo Direct to perfect the package. This E3 was a nice change of pace but I think E3 is just so much more dynamic when it comes to presenting and hyping these game announcements ON stage than through the Directs.

So its over 24 (almost 48) hours from the event and I still don't know how I feel about it all. It still feels alittle flat to me. That said I will be buying everything they talked about, it all looks great but I dunno just didn't feel like an E3 event.

And I think thats part of the issue, this is E3 and they put out just another Nintendo Direct and I feel that had this just been another Nintendo Direct I would have been happier with it. But I feel with it being e3 and the WiiU really needs to be noticed they really should have brung their A Game. That said I should have kept my expectations in check I guess.

I think revealing "X" earlier this year was kinda wasted, it should have been revealed at E3 as I think it would have gotten more buzz for them now maybe. Same with Sonic Lost Worlds, maybe had they have had those 2 revealed during the Direct at E3 it would have added abit more punch to the whole thing.

And maybe having a proper press conference, albeit a smaller one would have been better, maybe like what they did with the 3DS Presentation last year. An hour long, show off the games with some people showing game play on the stage as well and talking about it. I dunno Iwata just talking for 40 mins and showing some trailers isn't doing it for me at the moment. And thats another thing, as much as I like Iwata and his style works for Nintendo Directs, as its e3 I would have rathered someone with abit more stage presence to be up there introducing games and getting people hyped up.

As I said had this just been a Nintendo Direct any other time of the year I would have been happy, but I would have liked something abit more amazing for E3, what they showed was great but just lacked the punch it could have had if they had of planned things out better.

As for what was shown, Super Mario 3D World I'm sure will be great and I'll have a blast with it, however looking at it I do wish it was on the 3DS instead as I just really enjoyed that experience on a handheld and I'm not sure how its going to translate to the console. I'd prefer a larger exploration style Mario game ala 64/Sunshine/Galaxy. Mario Kart looks nice and it will be Mario Kart.

Wind Waker HD I hope to see more work on, I want to know whats happening with the Triforce Quest though. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze like many others isn't what I want to see from Retro, hoping they are working on something else at the moment as well because I'm kinda disappointed if this is it from them. X is easily my most anticipated game on the Wii U, I just can't wait to play that game and explore the world in it.

Smash Bros trailer was amazing, I was giggling like a school girl during the Mega Man reveal, easily my moment of the Direct.

Not sure if it's the right thread, I'll try anyway.

Do we have confirmed recap on frame rate and/or resolution of WiiU games shown?
I mostly care about 60fps but I wouldn't mind knowing which one(s) run at 1080p, if any.

You know what would be fun?

Splicing together a fantasy Super Nintendo Direct, with all the best bits from the Pokemon & February Directs, the March Direct, the E3 Direct, and the Developer Directs.

Can you imagine announcing/revealing all of these games in one go on Tuesday (instead of spoiling the surprises in the preceding 4 months - I mean, did the earlier announcements really improve sales that much?)

Thanks Sony and Ninty, you made this E3 worthwhile for me.

Same. :)

A good number of good games I should be picking up.

Now the wait for X's release date (and/or full name) is going to be even more painful too. :)

Of the big new Wii U games shown:

Donkey Kong Country 5
Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros 4 and 4 1/2
Mario 3D Land 2

Are you seriously telling me Smash Bros. - a game whose entry came out years ago and only appears once per console, and Donkey Kong Country Returns, a game that has been revived recently and only just got its second installment (no, it is NOT DKC), fatigue?

Hell, 3D World is pretty much just the first sequel and even then it plays LESS like 3D Land and more like a new title.

I think the point is character fatigue.

Where are the new characters? For a company that focuses so much of its energy celebrating the characters it created it sure seems unwilling to make some new ones. Bizarre.

Reposted to prevent it being ignored at the end of the last page

There were two strange things about the Nintendo presentation for me:

1. That there were almost no surprises. No "Retro's made a sequel to Gumshu!", no "The next Mario is entirely underwater", no "Say hi to our new employee, Mr Bleszinski".

2. That I don't really care about point 1.

For all the desire to see dramatic reveals and megatons and other cool stuff to talk about on forums, the reason I watch these things is because I like to actually play games. And, unlike any other E3 presentation I can remember (and I've been watching these since you had to wait for a VHS that came with a magazine), I actively want to play every single game I saw. During literally every single game they showed off I was thinking to myself "I really want to play this".

During even the best E3s of the past, there have always been at least a couple of games that I'm just plain not interested in. In Sony and MS's conferences this year, even with the big impressive reveals there were only a handful of games that I actually wanted to play. It's something I only noticed after the presentation had ended, but Nintendo, in a strange, quiet, understated way, has produced a wonderfully appealing line-up of games.

On to the actual games themselves:

Super Mario 3D World

I've said a few times before (and I've read it from many others on GAF) that the best parts of Mario Sunshine, and arguably some of the best parts of any Mario game ever, are the fludd-less mini-levels. These levels were made of simple, floating platforms, and were just straight-forward platforming bliss. Here's me talking about it back in 2006:

I fully believe the biggest opportunity Nintendo missed on the Gamecube would have been a full game of those fludd-less Sunshine minilevels. Get about a hundred of them (obviously with a bit more variety than in Sunshine), divide them thematically into worlds, slap on a "plot" and you've got yourself an amazingly fun game. Sigh... maybe on the next gameboy.

I actually didn't remember that last bit when I searched back for the quote, but it does tie in nicely to the point I was about to make; that the recent 3D Mario games, and especially 3D Land, have really moved in the direction of more linear levels that focus on tight, well-designed platforming, and are all the better for it. They're three of the best games of the last 6 years of all time, and Mario 3D Land is criminally underrated.

Nintendo have basically taken that platforming-first approach and made a wonderful-looking game with one significant addition: multiplayer. For all people's grumbling about not getting the Skyrim-Mario hybrid they for some reason craved, Nintendo have just made the biggest change to the franchise since Mario 64. As Joe Biden would put it, this is a big fucking deal. Not only is it going to be fantastic fun, but I have no doubt that it'll sell like hot-cakes because of it.

The last thing I'd say to anyone who doubts how good this game is going to be is to read Yoshiaki Koizumi's Wikipedia page. Seriously, read it. That guy has pretty much the best CV in the industry, and he's producing a four player 3D Mario game. This is a four-player 3D Mario game produced by Yoshiaki Koizumi. I'm going to repeat that: this is a four-player 3D Mario game produced by Yoshiaki Koizumi. Seriously, folks, this is a four-player 3D Mario game produced by Yoshiaki Koizumi! I frankly don't know how anyone can't be excited by that sentence.

The Wonderful 101

Looking as wonderful as always. I don't know what more I can say about this, pretty much everyone on GAF seems to appreciate it, so let's hope the general public will.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

Retro came into E3 with a problem. In the three years people have been waiting for their new game, there's been a lot of speculation as to what they're working on, and people have got a lot of ideas in their heads about what they think Retro should be working on, whether it's a Startropics reboot or a gritty sci-fi FPS to compete with all the other gritty sci-fi FPSs out there. The problem is that people have gotten themselves pretty attached to their ideas, and are now actually angry at Retro for not making a game that never existed outside of their own head.

Here's the thing. Donkey Kong Country Returns was a fucking fantastic game. This looks even better. I'll take an actual incredible game over an entirely theoretical game any day of the week.

Super Smash Bros

Smash Bros in 1080p. There's nothing else to really go on at this stage, but that's a damn fine start.

X

Mother of god this looks glorious.

Wii Party U

Yes, I'm seriously including this in the "games I really want to play". I need a good multiplayer mini-game collection for my Wii U, and this is starting to look like good fun (especially the gamepad-only slot-car racing!)

Mario Kart 8

Strangely enough, although I played an unhealthy amount of Mario Kart 64 back in the day, I never even bought Double Dash, and never got into Mario Kart Wii. Neither seemed to offer enough to supplant 64 as the definitive game of the series for me.

Mario Kart 8, though, actually has me very, very interested. Not only is it a looker, but the anti-gravity mechanics should give Nintendo a lot of scope to change up the course designs in some really interesting ways. The fact that it's giving me some serious F-Zero vibes is no bad thing either.

Bayonetta 2

I never played the original, but the sheer over-the-top ridiculousness of this is starting to draw me in.

Wind Waker HD

See the first sentence of my Smash Bros comment, but with Wind Waker in place of Smash Bros. Seriously, though, this looks (as one would expect) amazing, and even Miiverse seems to be really well integrated. A perfect way to re-aquaint myself with one of my favourite games.

Pokemon X&Y

Like Mario Kart, this is another franchise that Nintendo have managed to interest me in for the first time in a while. I played as many hours as there were Pokemon in Red back in the day, but haven't touched the series since. This seems like a great place to get back into it.

This isn't an E3 that's going to go down as one of Nintendo's greats. To be honest, I probably won't even remember it myself in a few years. I'm sure as hell going to remember those games, though.
