Amazon Breaks Video Game Pre-Order Records By PS4/XBO, Up 4000% YoY, 2x Black Friday

Last week, the Amazon Video Games store made history with its biggest pre-order week ever thanks to the launch of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. In fact, at the peak of demand last week, Amazon customers were pre-ordering more than 2,500 Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles per minute.

In addition:

· The E3 week pre-orders of the two wildly-anticipated gaming consoles brought a year-over-year increase in orders of more than 4,000%, compared to consoles ordered during E3 week last year

· Day-one pre-orders for the two consoles was nearly two times that of all video games sales on Black Friday last year (2012)

News courtesy of Amazon PR's firm, Weber Shandwick.

Going by this list PS4 is a good majority of those.

2,500 per minute. Wow. That's a lot. Glad I got my PS4 Launch edition pre-order in. Also hope that all goes well and it actually ships day one.

Surely that was always going to happen given there's new consoles this year. The figures for this year vs. 2005 would be more interesting.

Two times the number of games sold on Black Friday last year? People were really ready for a new generation. I hope that the market keeps console gaming alive. Hopefully the industry itself will find a way to make development and publishing profitable without doing a disservice to its customers.

Comparing to last year seems a little silly. What were people preordering?

Day-one pre-orders for the two consoles was nearly two times that of all video games sales on Black Friday last year (2012)

I read it that way, that only these 2 SKUs sold more than all video game sales (including games) from last year's Black Friday.

edit: ah ok- you were relating to the 4000% increase
edit2: but even then - they preorders are higher than order from last year.

Just how many of these consoles will actually be available at launch? I can't see all of these massive preorders being fufilled day one.

Sony is predicting that demand for PS4 will exceed supply this year. This is way they limited launch day availability and started introducing only bundles for launch at some retailers.

I'm already laughing at the people who said that PS4 and Xbone will sell as poorly as the Wii U. Realistically, it was never going to happen.

Anecdotal, but three people at work have switched back from the PS4 to One after the news about no DRM broke. They seemed very happy that it will be business as usual. Very happy.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens on a larger scale as the news slowly disseminates into the mainstream.

I've got day one orders on both the PS4 and Xbox. Not sure that I'm keeping both, but I'm hoping they can fulfill at least the PS4 order.

What they're saying is that preorders for XBONE and PS4 this year were 4000% higher than overall console (not games) sales (including preorders) during E3 last year.

Dayum, 2500 orders per minute? That's impressive. I still have to order mine but it won't be at Amazon.

2500 per minute was the peak. The peak might have been 10 minutes. Even if those 10 minutes were all it sold, that gives us 25000 consoles, which is a lot for only Amazon.

Man that's a lot. And good to know. I hope these systems give the industry the kick in the ass it seems to need right now =P

I thought console gaming was dead? Killed by tablets and smartphones?
Well,uh, I'll bet most of those people ordered those PS4s and XBOs on their tablets and smartphones, rather than order from their PS3s or X360s. Take that, consoles!

Looks to be a healthy start for the generation which is good for everyone.

MS software sales on Amazon rocketed up after they chickened out/wised up.

PS4 obviously started way strong.

Bodes well for gaming as a whole.

So if that is the case how the hell is amazon going to fulfill all those day 1 pre orders? I know we have no idea how many Xbox Ones and PS4's amazon is allocated but from the numbers mentioned in the OP it sounds like there will be a lot of pissed off people come November because they are on a waiting list due to lack of stock. Does anyone know if amazon uses a first come first serve basis for pre orders meaning the people who ordered right away on June 10th are guaranteed?
