Mario Kart 8 Announced For Wii U

Nothing of value would have been lost....for me.

Still rooting for hammer bro and Pauline.
I'll never get the desire to play as generic drones in a series rife with unique and interesting characters. Pauline would be sweet though, it's honestly weird the later MvsDK games brought her back yet that model hasn't been used for anything more tangential. Ware characters would also be awesome.

For newcomers, I want Kamek, E. Gadd, Dixie Kong, and Mona from WarioWare (she would work great as a guest character).

I was going to agree with you, but I was pretty upset when Koopa didn't show up in DS.

Am I the only who doesn't really care about the character roster in mario kart? As long as the standard characters from N64 are there, I'm fine...

These all need to happen! Especially Kamek... You'd think he'd be in by now after he was cut from 64

But these "generic drones" are classic iconic characters, that the series is known for. I have a Goomba on one of my shirts, I would never buy a tshirt with a Yoshi or baby luigi on it. They're also better known to the general public then things like the babies, Waluigi and some of the others.

Rosalina has been featured in 4 games already. She's a very popular Nintendo character and a fan favorite. I think's she's pretty much in.

But Waluigi and Dry Bones, incredibly popular Mario Kart characters were not in Mario Kart 7.

I never really take side characters for granted in Mario Kart since Wii got rid of Petey and 7 dropped Dry Bones and Waluigi (even if the latter is back)

Nope. Since classes are always represented well and there is car customization, I don't really care about the characters themselves. Some voices are annoying, so I tend to skip those, but that's pretty much it.

What happened to Dry Bones and Waluigi and Toadette was a mistake in the sense that Nintendo tried to experiment with characters no one cared about or asked for. They were like.. well, they're new right?

I see your point and probably you're right but at this point I think it only could do more harm than good to don't bring Rosalina back.

It sucks the roster is pretty much the last thing we know about Mario Kart so we'll have to wait a long time before we know for sure if they return or not.

Dixie is not part of the Mario games. She's in the DK games. E. Gadd is still kind of an stretch since he is not directly related to Mario. Mario vs DK has been there since the beginning, and Wario was created as Mario's rival, so they're.in.

Never put to much thought into the roster myself. However I think they either have to start creating more original characters in the Mario universe. Or turn this into Smash Kart or some other name and open it up to the rest of the Nintendo universe. Simply cutting and re-adding characters and then adding baby versions of them can only work for so long.

I care more about how the blue shell is going to work. That's my deal breaker for me. I do not want to be constantly punished for racing well on the higher speed circuits, especially if that is the only way to unlock characters. I stopped playing Mario Kart 7 very early on because of the crap. It wasn't worth the frustration. If things stay the same with Mario Kart 8 I'm simply not buying the game regardless of how good and fun it might be at other times.

And yet...funky.

Funky Kong in Wii. ROB in DS. Miis.

While I don't care much about characters in MK Wii, Magikoopa deserves a spot by now.

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
Why does Rosalina look like sexy space Peach? Lazy, lazy design. Pauline would be cooler and scratch that same sex itch. But if you do have a sex itch, you might wanna stop playing Mario Kart, and go to the doctor.

I never really thought about him being included in Mario Kart despite how he has one of the best bikes designed after him in MK Wii.

He was going to be in the N64 game and was eventually replaced by Wario.

I'll be making the official Mario Kart 8 NeoGAF Community and unless people say otherwise, I'm banning Blue Shell. No matter how they try to "balance" that item, it always will be an issue for racers in first place since players who usually get it are those who don't really get too much benefit from it (5th place or so) It's not fair you get third or forth place just because a guy in last place got it.

They could add people from Wario's series. Or the Mario RPGs. There are tons of options that Mario Kart completely ignores without stepping out of the Mario umbrella.

If you ban the blue shell, you can look forward to boring races where whoever gets into 1st in the first 15 seconds wins the race every time, provided they aren't absolutely awful or using a troll vehicle.

The blue shell exists solely to counteract the massive advantage 1st place gets by both being immune to everything that's not a power item and being able to drop items. If you drop an item, you gain time on the pack, either because 2nd place hits said item or because they have to drive wide to avoid it. Do this once every two or three corners, and you get a good 2-3 seconds of lead per minute at a minimum, right up to around 10 seconds per minute if it's Bowser's Castle and you get a lot of fake item boxes. You don't even have to be good at placing items around corners, they just have to be on a racing line that other people have to take to keep up with you.

This is also why blue shells that hit players other than 1st and people immediately near 1st should not be in the game. The point of blue shells is to make it so 1st has to actually be good at the game in order to win, and hitting other players just softens the blow and makes it easier to hold 1st after being blued.

The only thing they need to do to balance blue shells is to add a timer (sort of like the one used for lightning) that makes it impossible for blue shells to appear within 20-30 seconds of each other. The MKW incarnation is by far the best blue shell in the series for what it's supposed to accomplish: you can dodge it only by giving up your ability to attack people behind you.

Regarding benefit to the user: by using the blue shell, the player immediately increases their chances of winning the race. If you throw a blue shell and later win the race, you won entirely because you got that blue shell in most cases, especially if the guy you blued finishes within 3-4 seconds of you (since that's how much time a blue shell costs its victim on average).

As annoying as it was, I prefer the 64/7 shell since it can hit racers on the track instead of just flying over everyone to hit first place like in DD/DS/wii.

The rate at which they appear and the spin out time after getting hit by one needs to be scaled back tho...or give first place mushrooms.

Yeah, the Blue Shell needs to remain until they come up with a better way to handle 1st place's inherent safeness. Every other position other than last has to worry about people both behind and ahead of them. With nobody ahead of them to get past and laying traps for them to worry about, they can focus all of their time on driving good and protecting their ass. First place is like this sheltered bubble from danger, while the rest of the pack eats each other alive. The Blue Shell is their (admittedly crude) solution to the problem attacking items have on racing games; first place's inherent safety advantage.

EDIT: Also, they really aught to add E.Gadd and Pauline because they are currently utilized characters in the Mario universe, they have 3D designs and models already made, and they aren't generic enemies or awful texture swaps (or the fucking Honey Queen, good god).

Could Nintendo possibly add anyone more pointless than Honey Queen?

Waluigi totally deserved that spot more than her :(

Wasn't e.gadd originally planned for ds?

Metal Mario was worse

What the heck was up with that. He doesn't even have a unique voice or animations... He's a new shader. That's not a character, that's a texture edit...
At least queen bee is a unique character, in that she isn't a recolor of another character

Are we talking about Miis?

But seriously, the Mario clan barely has characters. The different characters (player or enemy) are defined by their design. Goombas have as much character as Pauline.

I like the peripheral characters too. I always play with Wiggler in MK7 because he's the only character that gets a really unique animation when he gets hit.

:D

If you've never played Double Dash against your friends, constantly switching back and forth with Daisy to drive them crazy, then you haven't truly played Double Dash.

I hope there are Galaxy themed power ups.

There could give you Star Bits as a weapon and you shoot them really fast like a machine gun, spray and pray style. They don't spin you out but slow you down a bit.

A lot of the time when I fire a blue shell I can see the blast on my screen and then proceed to catch up to the person I blasted (if not pass them). >_> If I can't see the blast then it's usually either because I'm racing like a moron or 1st place has a huge lead because everybody else was hitting each other.

EDIT: This is MK7 BTW.

Sounds similar to the fire flower, which I find annoying because people just spray and pray. But I do like the idea of not spinning out.

Re: Blue Shell. I agree with this. Well said.

At least other games try to find innovative “blue shells” (for example recently the swarm in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed).

Ever since it was introduced in the Mario Kart series, Nintendo hasn't given a shit about improving the blue shell. Flying or not flying, its inherent effect has remained the same.

The lightning bolt is another terribly broken item that needs to go away. It basically killed clan wars in Mario Kart Wii.

An intersting interview with Konno and Yabuki during E3 published by the French website Gamekult. Sorry if old.

Direct link, in French: http://www.gamekult.com/actu/mario-kart-8-les-developpeurs-repondent-A110127.html

Google translation link - it's ok quality I think: http://translate.google.com/transla...art-8-les-developpeurs-repondent-A110127.html

My highlights:

- MK8 development began just more than a year ago.
- No others studio involved, 100% EAD Kyoto.
- About the Gamepad use: "Our priority is to provide the remote display on the GamePad only. We have other ideas, but that's all we can tell you for now."
- Why no F-Zero instead ?: "H. Konno: It has always been a Mario Kart per console, so we wanted to get a new one to have more people interested by our new system. But I also hope that there will be an F-Zero.
"

- About tracks size: "In Mario Kart 8 tracks have also been narrowed compared to Mario Kart Wii and reflects more the size of the road. "
- About customization: " Like Mario Kart 7 (but) with a little more choice"
- No editor even if they talk about it.
- About a Double Dash mode using the Gamepad: "H. Konno: For Mario Kart Wii, 7 and 8, we decided not to use it. But this is a request that is often heard, so maybe we can meet this desire.
"
