Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...

| 3. Introductory Blurb |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
46 games in the released part, 38 games in the future part. This seems to be another month with a good variety of games to try (although I am still way busy with Rogue Legacy), even though we seem to miss the heavy hitters from the june thread. Agains thanks to everyone participating!
We will also have a vote on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for june can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year. Anyway, have fun with the games from this month!
Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
1. Rogue Legacy (12 votes) - Free Demo/ $14,99 (PC)
iHqnHdfzh2lvq.gif
http://www.cellardoorgames.com/roguelegacy.html
Without a doubt, one of the most remarkable Indie releases this year. You can potentially play this game for ages, tight controls, addictive upgrade hook and a randomised level and skill design that manages to avoid feeling repetive even after 20 hours. There is literally no reason not to try the demo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2. Gunpoint (11 votes) - Free Demo/ $9 (PC)
yJMZ1HR.gif

http://store.steampowered.com/app/224820/
A sidescrolling Action Stealth Puzzle game that, although a bit short, leaves the player with a highly satisfying combat/stealth mechanic and I do hope that the dev considers adding some more content to the editor. If you like any kind of stealth, check out the free demo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Dust: An Elysian Tail (11 votes) - $15 (PC, XBLA)
dustearlycombo7mbgoj4i.gif
4. Little Inferno (10 votes) - $10 (PC)
yVwVhH0.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/221260/?snr=1_7_15__13
Some people just want to watch the world, and their time, burn. Is anything a waste if we enjoy it? Is everything? What if it isnt? Doesnt matter actually, but there is always more stuff to burn. Be right back.
5. The Swapper (6 votes) - $14,99 (PC)
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
ii9XSD5.png
This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.
A Dark Room - Free (PC, Browser)
BidGola.jpg
Link
One of those games you don't really want to spoil by explaining what happens, but if you liked Candy Box then you'll probably dig A Dark Room, though it has a more cohesive and interesting story than CB. You can probably complete it in less than a day, but it will require multiple playthroughs to see everything.
Alltynex - Free Demo/ 7,49€ (PC)
SS_1141_Apr._21_14.02.jpg
Link
Apparently a shmup fan favourite in 3 parts, never heard of it though. Might check out the demo next month.
Binary Maze - Free Demo/ 2,49€ (PC, Mac)
Binary_Maze_2013-05-09_11-05-13-96.png
http://www.desura.com/games/binary-maze
Binary Maze is a top down 2D puzzle arcade where you have to play for loving couple: R-boy and L-girl. Binary Maze is inspired by the great NES classic arcade Binary Land. Some Sokoban elements mixed in it and new items and enemies have been added.
Blade Symphony - $15 (PC)
phalanx.jpg
http://www.blade-symphony.com/
It's a sword dueling game. Having quite a bit of fun with it with some friends but it is very ping-dependant from what I've played so far. Bad ping seems to make it easier to win. However, most of the unlocks in the game are cosmetic, so your advancement in rankings is entirely skill-based, depending on your character type and sword type (which determine your movesets).
Blues for Mittavinda - Free (PC)
oOL1iJl.jpg
http://flottantpigbit.blogspot.com/2013/03/blues-for-mittavinda.html
If you like clay animated games check out this brilliant game. Blues for Mittavinda is a game about chaos for the Game Jolt competition.My interpretation of chaos is that it's subtle, ubiquitous and omnipresent. I can
think of nothing more chaotic than a bird landing on the branch of a snow-laden tree
Card Hunter - Free (PC, Browser)
JxSydrF.gif
http://www.cardhunter.com/
It's a F2P Browser-Based TBS game with some CCG elements thrown in. It's presented as if you are playing a tabletop RPG, which seems to be a recent trend. I think this is the third game that I've seen do that this year. Overall it's solid fun. Not sure if I want to sink money into it (like most F2P games, I find myself wishing I could pay once and have everything).
Chess the Gathering - Currently Free (PC)
maxresdefault.jpg
http://ctg.misfitsattic.com/instructions
Chess the Gathering is a mix of Chess and Magic the Gathering. Boards are currently made up of “rooms” which are chess boards (8x8). MP only, and players start with 2 “twins” which are essentially kings. If either twin dies the players lose. Each player has a hand of cards which they use to spawn creatures on the board, and cast spells on them to change their behavior. If you want in, post in the thread so someone can invite you.
Cloud Face - Free alpha (PC, Browser)
779262799.gif
https://googledrive.com/host/0ByoRKlLQX72dVG1vRFhvSXkzTEE/Web.html
Watch out for exploding cats! And continue with reckless optimism set to the best game song of the year, by Calum Bowen.
Crow - $7,99 (PC, iOS, Mac)
Crow_-_screenshot15.jpg
http://www.desura.com/games/crow
Crow is the critically acclaimed, story-driven action-adventure developed by Sunside. Combining unique exploration, combat, and game mechanics, Crow takes the player on an exciting journey to faraway lands where an ancient battle is unfolding. Your choices will forever alter the course of this world. Will you Curse your foes or Spare them and risk the consequences?
DeCalc - Free Demo/ $2,49 (PC, Mac, Linux)
Image4.jpg
http://www.desura.com/games/decalc
This wont appeal to many people I guess, but its a mathematics puzzle game! You get the result and need to arrange the numbers to account for the result you are given. I can imagine this to be surprisingly addicting. Free 20 level demo if someone feels like checking it out.
Defenders Quest - Free Demo/ $14,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
battle.jpg
http://www.defendersquest.com/
Defender's Quest is a fun, fast-paced Tower Defense / RPG that cuts out the fluff. The mechanics (stats & whatnot) are all on display so it caters a bit more to the hardcore TD fan. Overall, the developer's love of the genre really shines through and I think that puts the game over the top.
Dysfunctional Systems: Learning to Manage Chaos - $3,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
Capture5.PNG
http://www.desura.com/games/dysfunctional-systems-learning-to-manage-chaos
Dysfunctional Systems is an episodic visual novel chronicling the life of Winter Harrison. Having long become comfortable with her utopian society, Winter is surprised to learn that there are other worlds in other planes of existence.
Evilot - $1,99 (PC, Linux)
Phares-Peak.jpg
http://www.desura.com/games/evilot
You're looking at a lane-style (ala Plants vs. Zombies) Tower Defense title that mashes in Triple Town-like elements where you can line up similar units to morph them into more powerful units. It's a ridonkulous amount of fun. I've only played the first 9 levels so far, but if it holds up I'll probably make an OT for it.
Expeditions: Conquistador - $19,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
BattleTenochtitlan04.png
http://conquistadorthegame.com/buy-the-game/
A debut SRPG of sorts from Danish outfit Logic Artists set within the heyday of the Spanish conquistadors, featuring tactical roleplaying game with a touch of strategic resource management and a pinch of choose-your-own-adventure. Conquistador is set in a rarely visited part of history which is rife with mystery, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned violence. In short, it has been described as Pirates meets Jagged Alliance. Thumbs up.
Fleish & Cherry in "Crazy Hotel" - Free Alpha Demo (PC, Mac, Linux)
Fleish-Cherry-in-Crazy-Hotel-86642.jpg
http://red-little-house.tumblr.com/
Download Links
Adventure game based on 1930's black and white cartoons that reverses the damsel in distress trope. Super charming style, definitely check out the demo.
Futuridium - Free (PC, Mac)
04.png
http://www.futuridium.com/
Futuridium EP is a retro fast paced shoot’em up with a modern twist, that was inspired by one of the greatest 8bit shoot’em up of all time, Uridium by Andrew Braybrook.The gameplay is heavily score based, you can gain big multiplier destroying cubes and chain cubes together to get huge score boost.
Glob - Free (PC)
Untitled.png
Link
2D reflex based platforming game. The screenshot might not look like much, but I highly recommend checking out the video on Desura of someone playing this game how its meant to be played. You cant help but be awed a little. If possible, I suggest using the 360 controller for... obvious reasons.
Gods will be watching - Free (PC, Browser)
tumblr_mm28gshU5o1rt6u7do3_r1_400.gif
Link
Fantastic and short (depending on you survival skills) survival sim that also came out of this years Ludum Dare. They are working on a sequel and I highly recommend checking the free Browser version out to know why a fully realized sequel could be all kinds of awesome.
Hypersuper Cannon - Free (PC, Linux)
screen6.1.png
Link
Another fancy retro style game, but this is a) free and b) supposedly very hard. Havent tried it yet, but apparently you guide projectiles with your main ship thing to destroy the enemies.
Inverto - Free (PC, Mac, Linux)
BM0AbzWCcAAIV4T.jpg:large
Link
"Inverto" was born as a result of physical tests and experiments and inspired by Maurits Escher's work "Relativity", or to be more precise by it's famous Portal parody . During development game gained more linear level structure and parkour-like feel
KoPP_-_2.jpg
Link
It will be divided in stages, but there is no one-way-only in Odallus and levels have many paths, including to other levels. However, all paths in Odallus are infested by dangers and demons to which Haggis must be always watchful. Simple "evade the enemies" highscore game. Might have screwed up balance though if its too easy to just play for 3 hours straight. Unfortunate it doesnt have a demo.
Primordia - $9,99 (PC)
13.jpg
Link
Supposedly the best adventure published by Wadjet Eye Studios (the guys behind the Blackwell games and more). Havent checked it out yet, but the word on the street seems to suggest I should do that this month.
Projekt W - Phase 2 - Free (PC, Linux)
05-02-2013_1.jpg
Skies - $2,99 (PC)
Screenshot.1.png
Link
Top Down shooting game with a freely explorable overworld in which you hunt bandits, upgrade your ship and trade goods. Its a decent game and time waster, but if it doesnt work when downloaded from the Desura program, try downloading it via the Desura website, since apparently it might install a needed framework that way (after which the Desura program version should work too).
Soundodger - Free (PC, Browser)
soundodger_04.png
Link
It's a rhythm shmup where bullets fly out to the music and you have to dodge them. There's also a mechanic that slows everything down to help with maneuvering around but using it lowers your score. It features some fantastic music and includes a song by Disasterpiece.
Survivor Squad - Free Demo/ $7,99 (PC)
ss_985ce3c8c6b1053c9ff7d59eb0534e2c4a484604.600x338.jpg
Link
Diablo style loot game. What The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing may lack in replayability it makes up for in competence, enthusiasm and easy charm. The moment to moment slaughter, the deceptively deep levelling and abundance of powerful loot mean it's a difficult game to put down.
The Last Door - Free (PC, Browser)
44ced7c03287e8eedbdccba84ce7b9d9_large.png
Classic turn-based tactical RPG.You control a small party of heroes on a grid and try to defeat the enemies strategically before you pip out. It's extremely important to keep an overview of the field. That's why the positioning of your characters is decisive to sidestep traps or prepare your own ambushes.
Good work on this thread, currently loving Rouge Legacy right now!!!
Yeah, fantastic game. No doubt. I am highly impressed at how they made a procedurally generated game NOT feel repetive through the changing characters and skills + game play progress unlocks and huge amount of different room combinations.
Bought and played through both Rogue Legacy and Dust in June, blown away by both of them.
Can't wait for more indie games.
I've played a lot of makeup games but they don't come better than Rouge Legacy
Didnt like the motion controls in the Wii and Kinect versions though.
Last months thread had more heavy hitters, but there are still quite a few interesting games this month that I am eager to check out.
I hope Teleglitch's new version comes out soon. I read up a bunch on it and got so stoked to play and now it's being put out by Paradox on Steam with no way to buy the original anymore.
EDIT: Spoke too soon, looks like it's up on Desura still but I don't know if you'll have a steam redeemable key if I buy it through there.
I forgot to vote for June but my favorite is Soundodger. It's become one of my favorite games of the year. And I need to check out Cloud Face ASAP.
Looks like the DRM-free copy from the devs' site is gone but you can still buy from Desura.
New features:
The Die More Edition also includes new branching bonus levels, such as the Robotic Hardware Assembly, the Damage Statistics Department, and Unstable Product Reconfiguration. Players will have access to new items and weapons in order to survive, plus new story content above and beyond those included in the original indie hit – along with smarter, deadlier enemy AI to prevent players from ever seeing it.
Teleglitch: Die More Edition features:
10 procedurally generated levels, different every time you play
Over 20 types of deadly, relentless enemies
Dozens of weapons and items, which can be crafted and combined into improvised tools and deadly devices
A sinister plot to be unraveled within the twisting corridors of the Militech facility
The constant threat of swift, permanent death to keep players on edge
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
These guys worked on a weekly YT video series that will present the newest Indie Game releases with small gameplay clips, impressions and anything important you might need to know. Definitely a great way to get an overview of recent releases and hopefully another mainstay for this Media Corner.
Indie Releases: 6.29.13
I'm having quite a blast exploring and experimenting with an early build of Bokida – you can play it here for free. I've just created moving bullet train and crashed it into big structure I built earlier. Can't wait to see what kind of game the project will evolve to.
The Hits.Playtime contest might be coming to an end, but it's far from over for Bokida. We still have a ton of work to do ! We need to optimize our source code and assets in order to give maximum leeway to the player. And, what's even more important is that we still have to implement many of the game's key elements : The narrative and its progression, that involves dark obelisks in reuniting the dark and the light stars; but also player progression, with progressive unlocking of extended capabilities (e.g. a limited number of available cubes to plop).
The first expansion for Sword of the Stars: The Pit , entitled "Mindgames' , will be released tomorrow July 1st on GoG/Steam/etc.
http://sots-thepit.com/the-pit-mindgames-to-be-released-july-1st/
Cerberus is on its own for this release (just like they were with The Pit) and I thought that the base game was excellent if you are a fan of authentic roguelike games.
People should always post the features when announcing stuff like that. Its the most interesting part :p
FEATURES
· 2 New playable characters; the Human Psion and the Tarka Ranger – the first playable alien character!
· 10 New floors of ancient, evil science add to the challenge!
· New room types, including wide, multi-level biospheres!
· New traps, new weapons, new items, and new recipes!
· New game mechanics, including 28 Psionic Powers!
· New Psionic enemies to fight, drawn from the Sword of the Stars universe!
· 2 New Play Modes; “Infinite Mode” as well as “Seriously? Mode”, for those players that find “Insane Mode” isn’t insane enough!
· Expanded meta-game aspects, including the ability to “bank” XP and spare items from one session and start the next run of the game on a deeper level, using your “banked” equipment.
ARGH so trapped in Rogue Legacy, must play more, but reading through it's thread makes me feel a bit slow... Been taking my time and exploring and enjoying it, and the guys in there are finishing NG+++ or something ridiculous.
Anyway, glad to see it and Dust get high places in the voting list, though I would've liked to see Chasm up there as well haha. Now time for a bunch of new games to try out!
Already played some Blade Symphony but it gets really hard to play if you get bad ping or paired against someone with bad ping. Otherwise quite fun with somewhat deep combat mechanics, even if they don't always feel completely fluid. Definitely a game to play with friends while trash-talking over Skype/vent/TS.
I know that feeling. I kinda feel like rushing the game too, but I feel like I am casually strolling around compared to another friend or the gaf thread regulars.
But yeah, its crazily good. Really hope they plan on adding more content via DLC. I mean there is a ton of stuff you could potentially add with skills, biomes and such.
Also, you could try that program in the OP (if you are on Win7/Vista) to check for all the Indies we covered in these threads so far, including impressions and average scores by us. We need some more people using/testing it to create our impressions database anyway.
Just finished Larry Reloaded. It was... Larry...
The game itself was good. The controls were fine and the background art looks amazing. The music sounds really nice and I love the big band vibe it has, but there's one really bad thing about the game and that is the character art and the way the characters animate. They look like really cheap drawn 'sketches' that aren't anywhere near finished (especially compared to the beautiful backgrounds) and the animations feel like really bad flash animations.
I guess the game is great for the people who love the Larry series and it's worth to play it, but if you're not familiar with the game or not too fond of point & click adventures; don't get it. Not at the $20 price tag at least.
I feared that might have been an issue. I wasnt too convinced from videos either, but I guess you get what you pay for if you make rather low budget video games (600k isnt all that much for professional game programming/publishing).
Yeah it's kinda sad actually. Especially when you see the amazingly drawn close-ups of some of the characters (kinda NSFW) and the beautiful background art. I wonder what kind of budget the Monkey Island remakes had, because those animations and character designs were way better.
Super useful thread.
Nice to see Blade Symphony hit beta. I've been watching some of their YouTube dev diaries and I love their dedication and openness. I never played Jedi Knight II but it looks like it might appeal to that sort of audience.
Valdis Story finally made its way to Greenlight.
There's a demo linked there.
I've played the game for the last 30 minutes and it definitely feels like one of the best "metroidvanias" I've ever played.
I would be very surprised if this didn't get put on Steam. It's surprising to see this going through Greenlight since they Endless Fluff Games already has a game there.
Soundtrack recommendation: THE BINDING OF ISAAC
a3111078532_2.jpg
Composer: Danny Baranowsky
Length: 112:27
Presumably it'll be suggested more than once, but for me BINDING OF ISAAC is the first that comes to mind.
LINK TO SOUNDTRACK:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJNQWpVf8Zg&list=PLB1A736FC282F9FA4
The soundtrack works for me on a number of levels -- it's instantly recognizable, yet it doesn't overshadow the game itself (if that makes sense). It seamlessly adds suspense to the game. Stylistically, the music covers a number of thematic elements -- terror, inspiration, childlike innocence, etc. In other words, one moment it's creepy and dark, and then you're filled with emotion like you're riding into battle hearing music from Conan. It captures the world fairly well and feels in many ways like early Danny Elfman stuff with a twist. It's epic without being pretenious.
FAVORITE TRACK:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwbK0Y1qnOY&list=PLB1A736FC282F9FA4
(SACRIFICIAL - Good representative of the themes/styles, has another version on the OST that's more traditionally old school sounding)
BUY IT HERE: (99 cents)
Here's a link to GAF's 2011 OST thread which has some excellent suggestions and links:
Thanks a lot for the mention of Beat Beat Shooter, Toma! I noticed that you didn't mention the platforms for the game, I'm guessing I may have not mentioned them before :) but the game is for both Desktop (Windows/Linux/Mac) and Mobile (Android/iOS) platforms.
Also, for anyone that's interested we are going to be posting updates for the game on indiedb and tumblr, also tumblr posts should soon be directly displayed on our main website if you don't want to use tumblr (http://missingdragonfly.com). On that note we just wrote some days ago about the gameplay mechanics of Beat Beat Shooter on indiedb: http://www.indiedb.com/games/beat-beat-shooter/features/beat-beat-shooter-gameplay-mechanics, will follow with another video soon and hopefully an alpha demo!
Corrected! Its really hard to find that information sometimes, so especially the future section has lots of unresolved platforms. Yeah, you have done a superb job with the threads already and with that many games I know its hard to track down all the details. Will take your suggestion and post the updates as they come! And don't worry I actually wish there were stuff to update everyday but as always time/job/life gets in the way of game dev ;)
