Media Create Sales: Week 25, 2013 (Jun 17 - Jun 23)

I just wish after finally getting a DQ on consoles in VIII, we got another to follow it. Maybe it could have expanded the audience a bit more for the series on consoles. I'd have much rather had IX on the Wii, and would prefer to have XI on Wii U instead of 3DS.

But as you say, personal wants and desires don't really come into the equation
Finally? Did you skip DQI-VII or something?

Out of curiosity, do we know what Injustice sellthrough is on 360 and PS3?

I don't believe they released here in the UK, and I was too young to understand how imports worked until about midway through the PS2/Gamecube era
Oh, didn't realize you were in the UK. Not into emulation either I take it?

I find 40% for Digimon to be better than I thought, some made it sound like it would bomb.

I hope it does at least close to the PSP version's numbers, if it ends up selling more than it in the end, that would be fantastic. :)

Edit: Famitsu has the PSP version at 73k FW and 153k LTD.

So I have my doubts, but hey, who would've imagined Dragon Ball Heroes selling as well as it did?

Oh I've since played some as well as the DS remakes and enjoyed them quite a bit. Just mentioning that VIII has been the only console release here as far as I'm aware, and since then it's been all handheld. I remember a lot of people (amongst friends and family) talking to me about DQ after VIII since it was new and they really enjoyed it. The name pops up every now and then, and they always seem disappointed there hasn't been a new console release since (I'm the only handheld gamer).

I also prefer the scale of VIII's world and narrative compared to the games, but each to their own. That's why while the comment earlier saying 'DQ would be better' on PS4/Wii U is misguided in a way. To some degree I get what the poster was getting at

Doesn't look like New Etrian Odyssey will sell much differently than IV. That's a little sad because it sounds like they put a lot of work into it. Though it's also a little comforting since they're less likely to make the whole series so story-heavy going forward. But then I look at Atlus' financial troubles and it circles right back around into sad again.

Regarding MH and DQ on PS systems, this is what I think.

Rumor has it that the contract between Capcom and Nintendo prohibits and MH on non Nintendo franchise for 3 years. So MH won't come to PS before Dec 2014, at the earliest, and even then I think it's unlikely to come for Vita given the popularity of the franchise on 3DS now. It could come to PS4 given that the WiiU is not selling well. However, I think even that is unlikely given that no original MH game has come to PS consoles since the PS2.

Regarding DQ, if SE had any plans to put DQVIIIR or DQXI on PS platforms again, they would have announced a port of DQX to PS3/4/V when they announced the PC port. They would also have announced some sort of DQM or other kinds of spin offs so as to be clear to their audience that DQ is now on PS consoles.

I think anyone expecting either one of these franchises on PS is just setting themselves up for disappointment. I would be extremely shocked if we see any of those franchises on a PS console anytime soon.

"Western games don't sell in Japan because they're xenophobic."

Ha!

Great to see TLOU doing so well.

Western games don't sell in Japan. TLOU is doing well in JP for a western game.

However, I do not think the reason for western games not doing well there is because they're xenophobic. McDonalds, Apple, Windows, american movies and music are all popular there AFAIK, so it has to be another reason.

There is no reason TLOU shouldn't appeal to the JP audience given the popularity of RE there, but besides RE, how well do other similar games sell there? SH never sold over 200K IIRC, Siren sold ~100K, and so forth.

I actually think the reason "western games don't sell" is because JP folks might be comfortable with their main franchises, more so than we are with ours, and are very resistant to change. Would TLOU sell more if it was made by Capcom? Probably, but possibly not that much more, maybe 300K LTD? Would it sell more if it was made by Capcom and named Resident Evil 7? Definitely, it would sell 700k first week.

I think JP folks are more resistant to new franchises and changes than western gamers are. In the west sales are obviously bigger than JP in most cases due to size alone, but even when you look at percentages compared to genre leaders, you see that western games have a more "open mind" to new franchises in their favorite genres.

I just think in this day and age it's extremely tough to have a 500K+ selling new IP in Japan and damn near impossible to have a 1m+ one. Maybe the 3DS will get to beast mode a la DS and it'll be easier for new IPs to reach those numbers there.

[PS3] Gundam Breaker - 60-70% (top seller for the week)
[PSV] Toukiden - 70%
[PSP] Toukiden - 50%
[3DS] New Etrian Odyssey - 40%
[PS3] Atelier Escha & Logy - 50-60%
[3DS] Digimon World Re: Digitize Decode < 40%
[WIU] Injustice - 4%

Well, at least Toukiden did better on the Vita if it means something but if anything this makes me more curious to see how Gods Eater will turn out since it's a much bigger title.

Sweet Susanoo at that sellthrough for Injustice that's just... ouch.

That is an unbelievably bad number, but I would guess RE:Revelations sales are far more worrisome to Japanese companies than Injustice.
It was bad and we shouldn't expect for crazy eshop numbers either, even if DQX made awesome numbers there. DQX has been on the top of the rankings for a very long time, where Revelaitons got in the top 10 in the launch and gone missing a long time ago. (Most of the titles in there are VC. I think right now, only DQX is on the top 10).

Also, Injustice didn't even got in the top 20 ranking, even though it launched a couple of days ago.

TLoU was being sold for 5000Y at a lot of retailers so that surely helped, I know it pushed me over the edge, if it was 6990 or whatever I probably wouldn't have picked it up yet,

So what are people thinking regarding LBX W SC 3DS?

The 3DS version of the original actually is at 180k, above the Boost version on PSP at 170k.

I can't find LTD numbers on the original release of LBX on PSP.

LBX W did 155k on PSP and 20k on Vita, ouch.

Ah, about the 100k 3DS titles...

Remember that creepy title with sort of Pikmin beings from Columbia? The sequel is coming this November.

Columbia's killing it, now if they'd revive Gadget Robo on 3DS. Granted I wonder if Beast Saga runs on the same engine.

Also, Racjin developed most of their games, including the aforementioned creepy Pikmin game.

That's what I brought up looking at King Zell's pictures. Is it normal for a first party game to be sold at that low of a price compared to other games?
Doesn't demand dictate price over there?

Yes, it is normal. First party titles are always cheaper.

Most (all?) western-developed SCE PS3 titles are priced at 5980Y and retailers sell them for ~5000Y

I've set myself up to basically expect Dragon Quest on handhelds and anything else now thats not a port will be a surprise.I wouldn't even be particularly surprised if the new Bravely Default was some iOS thing.

Third party software sales of 3DS outside Japan remind of PSP many times. You can't blame only companies they hesitate to take risks with the system.

My impression is that Famitsu seems to lean more core and MC more mainstream. Maybe more 3DSs are being sold at general stores than had been in a while, and Famitsu is slow in making changes? The more core-leaning would support the TLOU difference.

Maybe Famitsu tracks more stores that have more Playstation customers than Nintendo ones, like the Tsutaya chain of stores.

According to Dengeki, last week Wii U sold 6.592 pieces of software. It seems there isn't a limit on how low this console can go.

Isn't Wii U software library absolute desert in Japan even compared to US/EU? I'd imagine people buying a Wii U just grab the NSMB or MH and that's it. Not much for old owners to get.
