Mario Kart 8 Announced For Wii U

What I want fixed in MK8:

Earlier tonight in MK7 I joined a low VR person's room - he wanted to play with my group - and all was fine. It was kinda one-sided in my favor, though.

Then some other people I knew joined. Since we had decided to wear clan tags when playing together so people knew we were a group it started to look like we were a hazing gang. We had VR way above 2K but it still put <2K people in the room, even when like half the room was 20+K.

Even after a 57K person joined. Even after a 74K person joined (wait what). Nope - still <2K people put in the room. Uh... O.K. ;_;

I wonder what the newbs thought. :p

Seems to be a random thing.
A couple weeks ago I was playing Mario Kart Wii with random people. The lowest player was like 9500VR Full room,
then suddenly a -5300 VR guy joined us. It's common when there's people with 6k-8k around, but all of us were over 9k. Didn't make any sense.

Funny enough, he never left. He stayed the hour and a half I was there.

Haha sorry about that. Twas fun tho.

I just played Sonic Blah Blah Racing Transformed for the first time today (Since it's free on Steam for a little while) and I was blown away by the track design. The character selection is very awkward and the items are boring but those tracks man... I hope Nintendo takes a page from that game. The Luigi's Mansion stage resembles them a bit.

Transformed has great track design. The 30 FPS from the console versions can go away, though. From the footage I've seen so far there's some real potential for MK8 to keep up with its anti-gravity mechanic, though. Dat Haunted Mansion stage...

Haha sorry about that. Twas fun tho.

I was actually hoping you'd crash in on us sometime so nothing to be sorry about. XD It was fun indeed. Just a shame about the newbies.

Yes! This is hilarious. (featuring "PEACH HI I'M DAISY PEACH HI I'M DAISY PEACH HI I'M DAISY") I also want this:

Wario: "Doh I missed!"

Toad: "Woohoo! I'm the best!"

Peach: "Peach!"

Waluigi: "Waluigi time!"

etc. etc. I love that annoying Mario talk. At the Mario Kart 64 character select screen I used to rapidly select and unselect characters so that you could hear them make noises.

I also wish Yoshi would go back to making whatever the hell noise he made prior to Yoshi's Story.

Luigi: YAHAAAA, IIIIIIIIIII'M DA BEST?

I didn't like Double Dash!! at all, but this was the best part of it. Would love to see it return.
the two things I want from a new Mario Kart game are character specific items and individual karts. If I pick Mario I want to be tied down to whatever kart he's driving. Otherwise the characters pretty much become avatars with nothing unique about them other than how they look.

Not sure if its been mentioned, but the mk8 devs said theyve been getting a lot of requests for a doubledash mode using the gamepad and will see about getting that in the final game.

Except that that's not what they said at all.
Read the interview again. They said a Double Dash "sequel" has been highly asked but it's not something they want to do right now with this game tho they never said no to a possible revision to that mechanic for a futute MK.

Gamekult recently published an interview with Hideki Konno, one of the leading staffers on Mario Kart 8. It’s not up in English, but a few tidbits – which are very interesting – have been translated.

Some of the points mentioned in the interview can be found below. The information batch covers when the game’s development began, confirms EAD Kyoto as the only team working on the game, and has some details about customization and track size, the possibility of a Double Dash mode with the GamePad, and more.

- MK8 development began just more than a year ago.
- No others studio involved, 100% EAD Kyoto.
- About the Gamepad use: “Our priority is to provide the remote display on the GamePad only. We have other ideas, but that’s all we can tell you for now.”
- Why no F-Zero instead ?: “H. Konno: It has always been a Mario Kart per console, so we wanted to get a new one to have more people interested by our new system. But I also hope that there will be an F-Zero.”
- About tracks size: “In Mario Kart 8 tracks have also been narrowed compared to Mario Kart Wii and reflects more the size of the road.”
- About customization: “Like Mario Kart 7 (but) with a little more choice”
- No editor even if they talk about it.
- About a Double Dash mode using the Gamepad: “H. Konno: For Mario Kart Wii, 7 and 8, we decided not to use it. But this is a request that is often heard, so maybe we can meet this desire

I must of taken doubledash "mode" the wrong way. My mistake.

I am reallyexcited for this game.
PLayed it at E3 and loved it. Controls felt tight and racing was fast.
The gliders were much more responsive than they were in MK7, so you could make quicker direction changes.

Sadly the Nintendo reps didnt know anything about multiplayer.
I am hoping for some good online battle modes :)

Game looks awesome! Am I the only who thinks Waluigi's bike looks pretty slick?

Man, that desert level looks beautiful. Probably the best looking track I've seen so far.

Is that first screenshot Luigi's Mansion? That track's pretty stunning too.

I hope the new tracks are more interesting than MK7's. I found them all pretty average. MKWii had more standout tracks IMO.

This, so much. You should be able to race in whatever kart you want, but each character should definitely have one kart that obviously belongs to them. Even if that means Waluigi drives a JCB.

Mario Kart Wii characters each had invisible "bonus" stats that differentiated each character. In that way they were unique from one another. Unfortunately Mario Kart 7 simplified this by carrying over these unique bonus stats to apply to each weight class, not individual characters.

But I do agree on the whole, I like each character to feel different from the next. My bigger issue is that advantage of good acceleration light weights seem substantially less desirable when compared to the better max speeds and weight of heavier weight classes. For example, One tap by a heavier character sending light characters from the dead center of the track out of bounds too OP IMO.

The invisible stats were a bad idea...or atlease the hidden speed bonuses were. All of the female characters(lol no birdo), both luigi's, bowser, rosalina, funky, and miis speed bonuses made using the other pointless since they're technically inferior.
Poor Mario, Dry bowser, yoshi ;_;

Edit: Rephrased, Technical disadvantage.

Those Batpod-like wheels make it look badass, that's for sure.

How you use your character still plays a big role tho.
Like I said before, I loved using Dry Bowser and using him never stopped me from kicking some Daisy and Funky asses.

Those stats are pointless if people don't know how to use them properly.

Hidden stats was the worst idea in MKWii. I usually mained Mario Mach Bike and had a VR in the high 9000s, and didn't have trouble for most of the time, but man that was a terrible idea.

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
The resurgence of the Koopalings makes their absence in the Mario Kart games even more annoying.

Bowser Jr. can suck an egg. A Yoshi egg.

But again.. who would be the perfect candidates?
More than 3 Koopalings in the game sounds a little bit overkill. Heck, even 2 are too much since we already have Nowser Jr.

Since all of them are pretty much the same If I had to choose my two options.. it would be these two guys:

Iggy_Koopa.png

Roy_Koopa_en_NSMB._U.png

Iggy Koopa and Roy Koopa.
Based only on their design.
I wouldn't put too much effort into this anyway.
This girl has more chances than the Koopalings combined.

Any of them would be better than toddler Bowser.

Dixie does seems like she has a better shot at getting in and that doesn't bother me. That turd that refuses to be flushed named Bowser Jr. returning is more frustrating.

I don't see the problem tbh. Preferences I guess. I couldn't care less about Bowser Jr :p

In other news, if history is anything to go by... I think it's 100% sure we will get Bowser Castle 4 from GBA as a Retro Track. This is the last Bowser Castle left from the game.
I'm starting to think this might be the hardest Mario Kart Retro Track wise. A lot of possibilities.. Toad's Turnpike, Yoshi's Valley, Wario Colloseum, Broken Pier, Mushroom City, Grumble Volcano just to name a few...

I wouldn't be so sure. There are many “easy tracks” left aka Moo Moo Meadows and the countless likes. They indeed have the possibility to make a great choice of retro tracks but they may also want to keep some for future instalments.

Won't believe it until people have the game and are testing it. No one should believe this. The article doesn't mention how they came to this fact.

Well, the game is 10 months away at the latest so it could happen but yeah. 'm not holding my breath for this one unless Konno himself or a real official source confirms it.

It's mind-boggling how a Mario Kart game is the closest thing the Wii U has to a visual show-stopper so far. Though would there be anything stopping it really just being 720p stretched out to 1080?

nintendo is just catching up to 2006 or whatever. racing games being visual show-stoppers are nothing new. from a design perspective, there must be something really cost-effective about doing it that way..

Probably output at 1080p but rendered at 720p like Pikmin 3.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking Nintendo means unless they say otherwise. Was amusing seeing people make a big deal out of Pikmin 3's japanese box having "1080" on the back of its box earlier.

Smash and 3D World actually are being rendered at 1080 though, right? I remember some sort of deal being made out of those two's 1080/60fps nature moreso than DKC/MK8/WWHD's which aren't 'true' HD.

Wasn't WWHD 1080HD, just in 30 fps?

That's almost certainly due to nintendo not wanting to redo animations for the game at 60fps

Ah, I realize that, it's just that from Astro's post, I was confused as to whether the game had been confirmed to be 1080p or 720p; could have swear I heard it was confirmed as the former.

I seriously need to see new footage from this game.
the same for Donkey Kong and Super Mario 3D World

I'm tired of the same footage everywhere u.u

Whether the game runs in 1080p or 720p - it won't matter to me, since it looks fucking amazing.

However, there is something interesting to note about that ONM Article:
Besides, at first you'll be too busy gawping at the graphics to notice. Super Mario 3D World looks lovely in its bright, chunky way, but Mario Kart 8 comfortably has the edge as eye candy. This is the first big step up for Wii U, a real visual showcase, running in 1080p at 60 frames per second (and goodness knows we've waited a long time to say that).

Sounds to me like the person or the people who wrote the article actually waited for confirmation on it running in 1080p and have only now been able to "confirm" it.

But like I said, whether this is true or not, doesn't matter to me personally. Steady 60 FPS per second, espcially for a Mario Kart game is what's most important.
