Yves Guillemot: ZombiU Wasn't Profitable, not even close, no sequel planned

Yep dunno why they made it exclusively for the Wii U. There's two platforms that you just don't touch right now as a 3rd party... Wii U and Vita.

nice try but they actually were happy with AC Liberations sales and are bringing more games to the platfrom and no proof of any publisher saying their games are not selling on vita. on the contrary there are many instances publishers are happy with their game's performance on vita. install base is low but that install base actively buys games!

Then why has nothing else besides NSMBU moved any software? The root cause here is the WiiU's ecosystem.

I don't think I understand the question. Lego City sold well for when it released, as did Monster Hunter. Those are the only other "big" exclusives. Sonic Racing sold best on Wii U over any other version. I'm not saying the Wii U has a great ecosystem at all. I'm just saying that ZombiU needed to be more than a character-less tech demo.

At this point. I feel sorry for Sega and their up and coming exclusive games on WiiU. I hope they can afford it.

Wow, I'm not very fond of the game but that's really fucking harsh. Considering they didn't even try porting the game to get some extra profits, it must've been really, really bad.

Out of all the retail games on Wii U, It should be assumed that only NSMBU has turned a profit so far.

Reggie Fils-Aime made a statement in an interview where he said the Wii U was profitable with the sale of one game (assuming they meant NSMBU). I'm assuming that some R&D costs built into making a console like the Wii U spill over into making games like Nintendo Land and NSMBU.

No you can't say that man. Haven't you heard? The gamepad makes the game what it is and whatever scheme they come up with otherwise would pale in comparison.

You're being sarcastic, but it's true. The Last of Us took ZombiU's "enemies can attack you while you're rummaging through your backpack" thing and it doesn't work half as well. It really is a great use of the gamepad.

The problem with porting it would be that smartglass and Vita controller play are not standard on those systems, so for a game that already struggled to sell on one platform, you are really taking a risk by limiting it to people that use smartglass or Vita. I wonder if a straight port to PS3 and 360, with the 2nd screen stuff removed, would work.

It's also just too late. No one is going to care about ZombiU a year late, especially with new platforms coming out.

It could totally work, but since the game is designed around the tension of having to manage two different screens, removing one of them would make it a bit duller.

The game looked gre4at but this isn't really suprising. Their isn't the install base to really make games profitable unless the entire Wii U community buy the game. Even then it might not be profitable.

It's a shame that he isn't interested in making a sequel because if it was on multiple platforms I think it could do really well

Even considering it was part of one of the launch packs ?

Damn, WiiU's future looks bleaker and bleaker.
I wonder if Capcom is going to consider jumping ships again with its MH franchise.

Sega was profitable with Sonic Racing I believe. I have no doubt in my mind that Sonic The Lost World will do just fine as will any other Sonic title.

So, I suspect this is true, but it's really odd to me that the biggest piece of news in the article isn't quoted or sourced at all, just stated like that.

Like, here's what Yves actually says in his own words in the article:

Here's what is attributed to Yves in the article:

Every other statement in the article is provided in a direct quotation. When did Chris Morris talk to these people? What specifically did Yves say on the subject?

hmm good catch, I think he is " MorrisatLarge " on twitter? Maybe someone could ask? But I could see this news being a possible scenario

I thought Zombie U was the most successful third party game on the Wii U, somebody was using its sales as an example of how things could be for a third party. If so...uh oh.

Ugh.. these are one if the reasons why I have a love hate relationship with Ubisoft. One minute, they defend the crap out of a system, the next day, they talk hella crap. Why? Just super why? Seriously.

On the other hand, Nintendo needs to grow up. I'll say this... I'm tired of Nintendo fans always defending Nintendo bad business choices. Sure, they have been the most innovative out the two but innovation is nothing when the output becomes useless. Everyone could go on talking about how everyone copies Nintendo but in some ways, regardless of copying, they always do so well without it.. I'm tired of the Nintendoom articles but come on... this is tiresome to hear the same issues all the time with every Nintendo system.

I just got it last week, it's extremely rough around the edges but the game really nails atmosphere and the sense of dread. You just want to hide in the little room rather than go out for supplies.

Why would they jump ship based on the Wii U? The main games are on the 3DS, which is successful, especially in Japan.

Good point. Where was the marketing for Zombi U? Ubisoft pushed AC3 at every corner, but I never saw a commercial for Zombi U. No marketing plus terrible reviews doomed the game.

Positive word of mouth is the only reason it probably has achieved whatever sales it has, thus far.

That is about the entire round-up of good reviews. Even the general view of people on NeoGAF who did not play the game thought it was mediocre based on review scores.

Check the scores, majority of the reviews were positive. Its such a weak excuse. Third party games on the systems don't sell.

This may sound weird, but this thread just makes me want to buy a Wii U even more. I especially want to check out ZombiU.

So that's what happens when you make a fun survival horror game, waste resources to remake the game as a less fun survival horror, and put it on a bomba system while barely advertising it.

Fuck you Ubisoft. You killed Killer Freaks and got exactly what was coming.

Yep dunno why they made it exclusively for the Wii U. There's two platforms that you just don't touch right now as a 3rd party... Wii U and Vita.

Think about it...the Wii U launch is approaching...Nintendo wants exclusive content...but they don't have enough studios.

So what do they do? They approach Ubisoft with the potential of launching a new "Hardcore" IP on the Wii U to satiate gamers.

Nintendo supports the marketing efforts, helps out with distribution, waives all licensing costs and gives Ubisoft a bit of money for development.

In return, ZombiU stays exclusive to the Wii U for X amount of time (perhaps indefinitely).

They should port it to Xbox 360/One and PS3/4 (or either next or current gen). I'd be interested in playing it, even if they have to make a few adjustments, I have no desire for a WiiU.

On Metacritic, there are 44 reviews that gave it a score higher than 80. I just picked 5 random ones.

It should be noted that its Metacritic score is 77, which isn't terrible.

So, no, those aren't all the good reviews. It didn't fail because of reviews (although I acknowledge it also had some fairly low reviews, so I doubt they helped).

Well that fucking sucks. How profitable did you think ZombiU was gonna be? It's a game made for a niche audience (who loved the shit out of the game), but that's not where the money is so fuck us fans.

They're so small it's hardly worth running the servers.

so I guess the situation hasn't improved much if at all from those online numbers we got from first few months. Several hundreds and alike...

Nintendo shouldn't be sitting on WiiU for long. Try with a new hardware in two years or something, seems clear this one isn't going to be revived, they can't put out an entire year worth of software by themselves without any 3rd party support.

EA is concerned about the lack of online play? I'm not surprised honestly. Considering Nintendo itself has no online games yet (right?) for the system, is really telling I think.

Sounds like Iwata would've gotten some stern words around January and have since completely fast tracked the hell out of Wind Waker, DKCR2 and Mario.

Wouldn't be surprised if all hands were on deck on these titles for a couple of months leading up to E3, signalling the delays of Wii Fit U, Wii Party U, and Pikmin, among others.

Yeah ZombiU is the first game that ever doesn't pause while you do things in game. It's almost as if there's a demon inside ZombiU that takes your soul.

What a completely pointless comparison. ZombiU was a good effort by Ubisoft, a new IP launching with a new platform. It didn't sell because the WiiU isn't selling.

Most U.S gaming websites/mags wrongly trashed the game, 6/10-ed it. I wouldn't expect it to do well given that stink.

Considering what someone else posted in this thread earlier, this seems to be a gross exaggeration.

Nintendo shot themselves in the foot with the online thing. They made it way too cumbersome on Wii and DS. Well, the 3DS is still bad, and I haven't played a WiiU.

I love online play, and I only ever went online with the Wii and DS a handful of times.

Can people really blame developpers for not wanting to support the Wii U with stories like this?

Bought it with my Wii U, the game sold something like 500k, I wouldn't think that was "not even close" to being profitable. The development must have been a mess since this is not even close to being a triple A title.

A shame though, it's a great horror game.

I would agree that the name hurt ZombiU more than anything. It's an in-joke, and a clever one, but it makes it look like the ultimate generic trash shovelware. Instead of being a very unique game.

Past that, its rushed development time probably prevented the game from featuring stuff like developed characters, cinematics, etc. It is a lean game designed to work around its limitations, such as using PA systems to communicate with unseen "preppers". But not the kind of thing to make hoards of people rush out to buy it and an entire system just for it.

Online play on Wii U can be comparable to PS360. Black Ops II is fully featured and does not suffer anything. Right now, Wii U is closer to PS3 with its lack of universal cross-game voice chat, though it is more expandable in terms of OS than PS3, so that may be addressed.

The bigger problem with Wii U and online may be a chicken-and-egg scenario. Nintendo doesn't have an online ecosystem by PS3 and 360 standards, and kickstarting one from scratch is difficult.

Because it was a multiplatform game. I seriously doubt they would have broke even if it was a WiiU exclusive.

I was talking solely in regards to the Wii U version. I don't remember actual sale numbers but they were happy with it's performance. Sonic generally tends to do well on Nintendo consoles so I don't think they have much to worry about.
