Yves Guillemot: ZombiU Wasn't Profitable, not even close, no sequel planned

If it takes failure for Nintendo to fix things that are broken, then it's better for them to fail sooner than fail later.

There's a better chance of catching up if they start running now.
That's the way I see it. The Wii u failing doesn't mean people are out of a job. It means Nintendo needs to rethink their strategy for home consoles. And no they don't need to follow Sony and MS. But at least a GCN tech GPU would help to bring in more third party engine compatibility.

Weird, because JP Caro confirmed, a few weeks ago, that they were "working hard on a prototype".

89BdV3W.jpg

Yeah well that 'prototype' isn't coming to WiiU any time soon. I'm betting it's now being refactored into a Xbox One/PS4 game.

Lol at people saying WiiU is tanking because of hardware. WiiU has no games, and it's pretty much no hyperbole. It'd be tanking just as bad if it had beefier hardware -and- Nintendo would be losing more money.

Shhh.

If it had comparable hardware, it would have more games, just like the Gamecube did!

They already said they are going to wait and see what numbers WiiU will pull during the holidays.

I'm getting Watch Dogs on the WiiU even though I am getting a PS4 at launch. But, don't expect those numbers to be good. People will only spend so much money on games and if those people are buying WiiUs expect them to be getting Mario 3D World, DK Tropical Freeze, and Wii Fit U.

I think it is a safe prediction that Splinter Cell, AC4, and especially Watch Dogs will tank on WiiU.

is this current? is there an end date? I was just looking at it on Amazon, but at $30 it will more than likely be an IMMEDIATE purchase when I get my Wii U tomorrow.

Don't know if there is an end date. It doesn't say there is one as with other sales. So it's permanent I guess.

Haven't you read the latest talking points in the Nintendo Fan newsletter? It's everyone's fault BUT nintendo whenever there is negative Wii U news.

Basically. The Blame Game just jumps around. These are companies, they'll stop making these games the moment they're no longer profitable. EA doesn't hate Nintendo, they just don't see any money to be made. Ubisoft tried, and they got burned, apparently. So what are they doing? Learned their lesson, made the next outing have a higher chance of being profitable.

The Wii U is going to get ports of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch_Dogs. And I would not be shocked if Ubisoft moved on if those don't meet their expectations. They're not going to waste time and money on cross gen stuff in 2015 and onward if it doesn't turn a profit.

Sad news on the ZombieU front. I'd say, though, besides the terrible name and box art - how many copies of a survival horror game did you expect to sell? Isn't that a fairly dead genre? I mean, they could have made a game more like RE4 - something that Nintendo fans have a demonstrated interest in. But... they didn't. And then they pin all their future platform plans on how a game in a dead genre sells? It's strange, to say the least. If they had launched with Rayman Legends, and it had been bombed, at least it would make sense to cut off future support.

Thank you. Can someone please find out what Condemned (a similar survivor horror game) sold on the Xbox 360 when it launched? Would make for an interesting comparison!

Niche game + no advertising + minuscule user base = hardly news.

Although, I wonder if we'll see any CEO saying "X game on ps4/xbone" was not profitable". I think not, because of rea$on$.

Wii U is in trouble

Nintendo needs to get aggressive in getting games out for this thing and marketing it. And really they're the only ones who can right the ship at this point.

Iwata's strategy of delaying everything until August to have a killer holiday season at the expense of any early momentum from the system coming out in 2012 was ill conceived and I think has clearly backfired. Pikmin 3 and TW101 should have been Q1 games.

Could this be the rumored 'big game expected to sell millions but only doing a couple tens of thousands in the first months' after all?

In any case, more so than any time before and more than any others, this is Nintendo's largest problem with going the third way. Lack of portability of the games means that AAA game development for the Wii U is even less tenable than it already was. Seems like Nintendo really was 100% unprepared for HD. It looks like it's actually going to save the two other consoles locked in their arms race.

Nintendo should basically hope for indie and their own games to salvage the system. But even Indies are better off going for PC+PS3 because the games can more easily be ported over.

And yet the thread title is the only thing that is not in quotes in the article. Not that I'm saying is not true, it's just strange being also the worst statement.

This holiday is PS4 / Xbone's birthday party. WiiU doesn't have a single chance to shine.

Yep. I agree. Nintendo had a year to get things right on WiiU. They failed massively. I'm now starting to accept it's a dead machine.

Hopefully, we'll see a true Zelda and SM64/Galaxy sequel on it. I'm not holding out for much more.

Although im planning to buy ZombiU the same day i'll purchase a WiiU because im a fan of horror games, lets not kid ourselves about the potential the game had.

1) Uninspired cover
2) Bad franchise name
3) Bad mainstream reviews all around
4) Bugs? Bugs, and Ubisoft didnt even bother to fix them.
5) Little to no marketing

This game with the average score it pulled off would've flopped on any platforms, i think peoples are forgetting how gamers have become very picky with game purchases, and most gamers outside of hardcore ones will only glance at the review score. Under 9.0 its probably not even on the radar of 95% of gamers.

Many games suffered of this this gen, wont change next gen.

"With Assassin's Creed III, we were involved on the Wii U version. The Wii U was kind of the pioneer of the connected tablet interface. This gave us some ideas for the first iteration of tablets connected with console games," said Rioux.

Unfortunately, while the Wii U was the beginning, Ubisoft Quebec's current focus is creating a cohesive experience between the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 and mobile devices. The studio is not committed to bringing some of these new experiences to the Wii U platform.

"It's not confirmed yet, but if it's possible to do it and it makes sense, yes we will provide some kind of experience on the Wii U. Our focus is on the new generation of Microsoft and Sony consoles," explained Rioux.

Yeah, it would obviously be nice if the hardware was BETTER, but that's not at all the reason it's doing so badly. It's plenty competent and will continue to be, much moreso than Wii to the PS3/360. There's just not enough games; CERTAINLY not from Nintendo, who will drive the hardware most.

And I know a lot of people will say they only want the system for Nintendo games, but my goodness, third parties bring some amazing games to the table and it would be a shame for them to leave the Wii U out of the equation. We need more games like ZombiU and NFS: Most Wanted U. They're really good. I just wish they would sell more.

How accurate is the 450k figure? Because that would be decent to good sales for a launch game. I guess it's not accurate?

Times have changed, you can't compare them. If the dude from EA is right and we're close to 25 'AAA' developers worldwide, it's pretty obvious that in the Sega Saturn times with cheaper development and more publishers there was more support on any console.

That's one of the dumbest things I've read on Gaf for a while. Why on earth would you buy the WiiU version if you're getting a launch PS4? It makes no sense.

I wonder if the videogame market is even large enough anymore for 3 major consoles. It seems likely that the WiiU will continue low sales this year, especially with the onslaught of the PS4 and XB1 coming. What is Nintendo's response? Keep supporting the WiiU as a zombie console with little to no 3rd party support and the occasional Mario/Zelda game coming out? When do they launch their next console? Do they decide to bail on the home console market entirely?

Are people still salty about Ubi pulling the Wii U exclusivity for Rayman Legends? They are a goddamn business and would be betraying their shareholders for limiting a promising title as such.
I think people are salty about Ubi delaying a ready-to-release game several months.

I just bought it for 18$. Ouch indeed for a next gen console. Also bought the Wii-U. Feel sorry for those that only will have a Wii-U as their nextgen console, unless they only like Nintendo games.

I would hope that anyone with a Wii U went in with eyes wide open, but I also realize that's probably unrealistic. I'm happy with my Wii U so far, but I never expected it to be my only console, at any point. Like recent Nintendo consoles, Wii U looks like it will have a solid lineup of exclusive titles (mostly 1st Party with the occassional 3rd Party Exclusive) that are must plays for me. It also looks like it will miss out on a lot of 3rd Party Titles. This has come to be expected unfortunately and until there is proof this has changed, I will be expecting this from Nintendo moving forward and would suggest others do the same.

The game is about using your smartphone to hack stuff...

Guess which system has a mandatory tablet built right into the system?

Try with a new hardware in two years or something, seems clear this one isn't going to be revived, they can't put out an entire year worth of software by themselves without any 3rd party support.

If they did that, there would be a lot of angry burned wii u owners. People expect 5+ years of support for a console.

guys... just a little observation; no tinfoil conspiracy or anything; just an observation:

in the article cited on the OP... there isn't a DIRECT QUOTE of Yves Guillemot saying that the game wasn't profitable; or that the Rayman situation was derived of that.

I studied journalism in college, and there's a rule that says that everytime you paraphrase something, you put the corresponding quote afterwards to back it up. you can see that they use that rule with the Activision and EA guys, but in the case of Ubisoft, there isn't a real quote, just the paraphrasis of the journalist. The only Ubisoft quote there is the one that it says that they are gonna wait for the holidays to evaluate the situation. There's nothing there about ZombiU or Rayman, except the journalist assumptions.

I'm not saying he's lying or something, but I find it pretty weird that he has direct quotes from the other two guys, and not the Ubisoft guy.

Bought it with my Wii U, the game sold something like 500k, I wouldn't think that was "not even close" to being profitable. The development must have been a mess since this is not even close to being a triple A title.

A shame though, it's a great horror game.

Yeah, ceo must be lying because game companies hate nintendo.

Seriously. It boggles the mind that Nintendo has been so slow with development. What the hell have they been doing since the Wii died off a few years back?

Also, if Mark Cerny is to be taken at face value, the PS4 will have developers having engines up and running in as little as 1-3 months, the same timeframe as PSX development. If studios have it so easy, why would they bother with "maybe" making a profit on the WiiU?

WiiU will be dead in 18-24 months I'm guessing. I'd be happy with Iwata being fired.

Have they even showed the Wii U version before? Or even the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions for that matter?

This is Ubisoft, they have a history of janky performance at launch with their games. If all they've been showing since 2012 is the "next gen" versions, the smart money would be on getting the Xbox One, PS4 or PC versions. I wouldn't trust them trying to downport and make it work on the other consoles. It's like them trying to get the original Assassin's Creed working on the PS2 or Xbox in my eyes.
