An update could be delayed a few weeks is not something that anyone should dwell on, especially when no one knows what the update will contain.

Summer implies June/July. They are now saying October. Hardly a few weeks.

It honestly sounds like you'd be better off just selling the thing. I mean if you feel this negatively about a company/product, I don't see why you would have any reason to own that particular product.

Because I like the actual games. Lego City is almost worth owning the games system by itself. And one day. One glorious day. I'll walk into my local game shop and pick up a copy of the new Zelda game for WiiU and it will be a amazing open world adventure with deep play mechanics, loads of new areas to explore without loads of boring fetch quests and superbly realised characters.

Yes man! You are perfectly right, when you power up Wii U and launch a game it now boots almost instantly. It tooks at least 10 seconds before.

So we got part 1 of the summer update :)

Great game. So how come the Wii u version has the same resolution as the 360 version? Was it a port of that? Lol sorry

It's a fantastic game. I've got it on WiiU and PC. I love the fact that you included split screen multiplay on the PC version. Thanks for that.

It's not what I think, it's once again people being misinformed saying Nintendo misled people.

So let me get this right. If Nintendo said they were releasing an amazing game this Winter and it got released on March 19th 2014. You'd be okay with that?

If they said winter I would not expect anything before December 21st. And March 19th 2014 seems all right...

Seasons, how do they work?

So besides the "hey, it´s a Nintendo thread - let´s complain about stuff", what does the update actually do?

The system will now connect to the internet to download updates and stuff from time to time if you choose it to, and stability.

Seems faster to load some of the apps, but that could be a false perception, tbh...

Read the OP.

- System checks for updates in stand-by mode and downloads/installs them automatically.

- "Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience."

What is your comment about the fact if you now power on the console and click on a game, it boots instantly (instead of taking >10 seconds before)?

This is factual, I just tried it and this is a good improvement on this side. We were promised a summer update and we got at least a part of it.

Thanks.

Don´t be so harsh. :p

I was searching for more details aside from "minor adjustements".Like the mentionend start up times for apps. ;)

I've made no such comment. Are you sure you've got the right poster?

I'm downloading the update now. I had to do it manually. I thought the last update enabled the WiiU to do this stuff in the background while the machine was in sleep mode?

Wasn't meant to sound harsh. ^^

Some times from me:

Last minor update
Opening Settings: 18,0 s
Closing settings: 23,2 s

Fully loading Miiverse: 13,4 s

After this update
Opening Settings: 10,1 s
Closing settings: 18,0 s

Fully loading Miiverse: 13,1 s

System settings did get a big improve in speed, maybe other internal applications too.

I didn't test other applications back then so I don't have the times for them.
But it seems like they didn't improve that much (like Miiverse), who knows.

Edit:

Miiverse started after 10,1 seconds now (second time I started it).

*It probably needs less time after the first start.

It did. Are you sure the option is/was enabled?

Edit: To clarify, it would not search for updates while in sleep mode, but If you turned it off and it still had updates to download or install it would do it while off/sleep mode. This update makes it look for updates in sleep mode.

I'll have a look for it after it's completed the update.

It did download pretty fast so I guess it's not a huge update.

Have they enabled analogue audio out with HDMI video again by any chance?

it worked for wii games, and then was removed in an update near launch for no reason

I meant you don't take into account in your posts we were promised a summer update and we got part of it in July.

What they added here when you boot is new. Previously you had to wait for the whole OS to load before your game selection/launch was taken into account. Now you boot, click on your game and it just starts. No more waiting. That's one less inconvenience with the OS.

Netflix starts to load almost instantly. Sonic All-Stars racing did start to load instantly. It's all a lot lot quicker.

For those complaining about Nintendo delays

Sure they suck

However I've had nintendo systems since the NES, Nintendo have ALWAYS had delays on all systems..

Shouldn't we be used to it after nearly 30 years?

There's nothing minor in today's update, it's almost as progressive as the last big OS update we had.

And I confirm gains measured by Captain Smoker.

So this is the Summer update.

Nintendo just added another patch for late summer / Early Autumn.

GO NINTENDO!!!!!!!!

So it won't automatically install any firmware updates. It will just download then.

Install completed downloads, except system updates, which will be installed the next time the Wii U is powered on

No. As Nintendo has already said. It's just a minor update. It speeds up some functions and allows background downloads. Hardly a major update.

More major than what they said it does but then again, maybe that vague "system stability, etc..." covers loading speeds.

I thought it would be one of those invisible updates and apparently it's a bit better than that.

Maybe not "major" but "something".

I used to think when so and so was downloaded, it was all done and then the install notion hit me in the face with a hammer.

I'm serious too, not joking or being sarcastic.

I was also hoping that it would do the whole thing in the background so I wouldn't have to wait for it do complete when I first turn on my WiiU. Hopefully they will allow a option at some point in the future to allow fully autonomous download and install of all software/firmware.

Maybe not "major" but "something".

Yes. Agreed. And very welcome. I'm hoping for big things when the next update drops.

I think you're still a student, or perhaps live in an area where leaves are changing in September.

I live in Scotland. In September we could have a foot of snow. Ha ha.

Why would you want it to automatically install a firmware/OS update? On the off-chance that they release an update that bricks systems - something that other manufacturers have had to deal with before, in this field and others - surely you're better with updates that auto-download but that require user approval to install?

Game auto-updates are one thing - at least there the worst-case scenario is that the game is broken until a patch can be rolled out - but taking the whole system down for the convenience of not having to approve a system update install?

Ah, the bitterness and cynicism should have given it away!

Whereabouts are you? I'm half an hour outside Inverness and enjoying the scorching (well, relatively!) weather :)

It's up to anyone to say if erasing the > 10 seconds it took to launch a game is major or not. I agree I expect more from the next update, such as folders now have 3 screens to manage.

Nintendo may be as slow as a week in the jail but I've got complete trust that every firmware update will be thoroughly tested before release.

Just a thought - maybe the big update changes the system so much, that it will have some serious impact. Maybe they are delaying it to take off some steam of the next consoles. But i am reaching here..

Definitely, I like to think by myself, that's one thing that defines me. Whatever Nintendo's amazing communication team says, as a user it's a major enough gain to just call it a "Wii U system update", and remove the "minor" part. I don't see what's minor in saving me time when I want to access games. There's nothing minor in enhancing the user experience.
