Minor Wii U system update now live.

Nintendo may be as slow as a week in the jail but I've got complete trust that every firmware update will be thoroughly tested before release.

I'm sure each update would be, but I'm very cautious about these things and would much rather have a simple bit of user approval so on the off-chance that something does get missed in their testing I'm not going to end up with a bricked machine the next time I go to boot it up.

That's fine. I understand your point. I'd just like the option setting in a menu somewhere. Folks like you who are rightly cautious would still update manually. Folks like can have firmware updates done for me.

Yeah, that's a reasonable compromise. A simple option with an obligatory "in the event of... blah-blah-blah..." would be fine. Opt-in, rather than opt-out.

Delaying it to September only makes sense. Nintendo is planning on countering GTA V release with Scribblenauts and some beautiful UI magic. Can't wait.

I don't see what's minor in saving me time when I want to access games. There's nothing minor in enhancing the user experience.

I understand what your saying about the big improvement on game loading. But pretty much all firmware updates improve the user experience. You can't all call them major.

Nintendo could do a better job of explaining specifically the improvements with firmware releases. "Further improvements to overall system stability and software compatibility" says almost nothing.

I believe the gain is major, as Wii U loading times used to be so long. But this is how I originally formulated my point: "There's nothing minor in today's update". I stand by it and I agree Nintendo should be far more explicit in describing what changes. I can already see headlines mocking the delay, while skipping the part where user experience is greatly improved already.

To be fair most journalists would only notice that when Pikmin 3 hits since Nintendo didn't even detail their update like you said.

It's more of a relative thing. Major updates are usually feature additions. An update that merely improves the loading times, regardless of how much you like it, is going to be considered minor when compared to the big updates that change more than behind the scenes stuff.

You're using the word differently to everyone else.

I'm saying something that cuts a 10 seconds loading time is not minor, but maybe it is, as I said it's up to anyone to judge time perception.

Usually, "minor updates" on consoles are called that way to define improvements not visible to the user, and rarely to define the solving of one of the biggest complaints people have with the OS.

Bodes well for what they have in stock for the "major update".

Was already expecting the delay, but it's still astonishing. Is there not a single thing they can do right with this console, how much more incompetent can Nintendo get?

Only game/app software auto installs while in stand by, firmware updates auto download but install the next time you turn it on.

Don't suppose this update would fix the external HDD problem I'm having? Basically when I go onto the settings menu and then exit my console stops detecting it :/ I need to reboot the machine for it to work again

Ah, the bitterness and cynicism should have given it away!

Whereabouts are you? I'm half an hour outside Inverness and enjoying the scorching (well, relatively!) weather :)

I'm near Glasgow.

I know. It's amazing. Best summer we've had in years. Just fantastic.

If you can't take the piss out of a miserable Scotsman, who can you take the piss out of.

As miserable as I appear to you (I'd like to call it being a realist). I've never personally attacked anyone on this board. I might have disagreed with what they've said and explained my reasons. But a personal attack. No.

HEY! THEY FIXED THE OS LOADING ISSUE!! FUCKIN HOORAY!!

Aw yeah. Screw all you haters, that's all I really wanted in the short term anyway. WHOOHOO FUCK YEAH

Oh hell yeah. Intalling right now and I hope it's true for me as well.

Fuck yeah indeed, it's fixed for me as well

Here is as good a place to ask as any - PS360 only used, what, 50mb for the OS, yeah? What is Wii U doing that it has to use so much more?

No it's not, the WiiU on checks for downloads about a minute after you switch it off and now with this update intermittently at various times in the day. Wii connect 24 stayed on all the time and never used the fan to cool down, it also never did anything useful.

Just curious though how often is the wiiu now checking for updates, once a day, twice?

Not quite...WiiConnect24 would connect intermittently...a few times per minute. (I use to use that terrible Nintendo Wi-fi dongle thing on my PC, and it would show each time it connected). You're correct about the fan issue.

Has anyone checked to see if the fan comes on during orange light mode?

Did they promise anything beyond OS speed improvement?

I remember discussions few months ago about how Nintendo would not be competent enough to enhance the OS.

Well, they just released a second significant OS speed improvement. And a third is coming, which shows the OS, just like games, was only late and was a fixable issue.

Great game. So how come the Wii u version has the same resolution as the 360 version? Was it a port of that? Lol sorry

All I will say is this: (and remember, these are my personal views do not represent my employer etc. etc.)
I am *very* proud of what we accomplished for All-Stars Transformed Wii U. It wasn't a port or anything, all the platforms were developed at the same time - but remember that it was a Wii U launch title. I am very happy that we nailed it.
Again, I'd want to add - I, personally, *love* my Wii U.
I have a Japanese Wii U and, sadly, Transformed isn't available in Japan so I don't have it for Wii U :(

Dang, that sucks so sorry to hear that!

I want to say that you all did an excellent job with the Wii U version. It is my most played Wii U game and I'm looking forward to more of that :)

It was mostly the fact that it remained in that orange stand by mode 24hours a day if you had it on, and it got quite hot too as apposed to the WiiU which goes back down to the red standby when it's not needed.

I hope they get a webstore sorted out for the eShop and let us be able to que downloads, it's more or less set up to do that now.

YES. This is what I want.
With Pikmin 3, Lego City Stories and Wonderful 101 coming out in Japan in the next month or two, I really want this feature.

Also, now DQX will *always* be updated correctly! Woo!

Jesus christ, you take that as a personal attack?
Do you get out much?

Maybe they decided to change more, reducing the OS memory footprint or something. Bigger changes take longer. I sure hope that's the case, at least.

This delayed update was supposed to be the main update that actually improves OS performance, in comparison to the Spring update, so we already know that's the case.

Personally, I would just like the OS to start acting like an OS that has 1GB of RAM dedicated to it. All the frequently accessed tools should ALWAYS be loaded into RAM. If you click Friends List or Notifications, it should just appear, absolutely no loading, and pop away when you're done.

One of the many reasons why I really want to see a 3DS hardware update, since on the 3DS, the system is actually limited by RAM and can't multitask like this.

It can be considered delayed if it is released after September 21st.

Since we don't have a date can we stop acting like this is the end of the world? Recently Sony released an update that crashed more than a few PS3. They even came out public asking people not to download it until they fix it, so I rather have a update delayed than this.

These are two different software teams from two different companies. What kind of comparison are you trying to make?

And for people saying they would be happy Nintendo is delaying the update so that it'll be stable:

It's called good Project Management, and the clear lack there of that Nintendo has that they can't meet deadlines. That's what the problem is here, and that, besides that their OS with 1GB of RAM is slower than a 7 year old system with an OS with ~40MB of RAM, to the point that the system is frustrating to use, is why people think Nintendo is pathetic.

I work for a software company. When you set deadlines and make promises to your customer, you do what it takes to meet those deadlines and keep those promises.

How long does it take to power on PS3 and access the menu in say Last of Us that I have in my drive? 67 seconds. It now takes 42 seconds to boot a Wii U game under the same conditions, 30% less. You should recycle your speech as you seem to not have integrated there was a great update today.

Wait, the OS speed is fixed? How much faster is the OS compared to the last update?

i noticed it to be much snappier and fluid. I used to have an issue with pushing an app to start and it hangs on the home screen for 7 seconds then to the loading screen (which was very fast). I only tried two apps, but it went straight to the loading screen and to the app only a split second after i pushed it. A much more solid experience all around.

Ageed. The way it feels like now is that everything is an application of its own never loaded until you use it.

it takes me, on average, two minutes to load the psn store after pushing the store button, it takes me a total of thirty seconds to get in to the eshop after turning on the wii u..... if only the eshop had games now...

No, but people including me have been having delays when starting games. For example, before the update when I used to boot up my WiiU and start NSMBU, ther would be a delay of about 5-10 seconds during which the OS basically froze and it did nothing. After that time, the NSMBU starting screen finally came up.
Now when I click on the NSMBU icon, it takes 1 second max before the starting screens appears.

Ha, love it
You may be trying to be a jerk here, but I've put in plenty of 90-hour+ weeks, (some people have done this for months at a time. ...I couldn't do it.) confined to a room with other team members focused on solely working on one project to meet a deadline because a promise had been made to a customer.

Of course, the trick then becomes, as others have suggested in this thread already, not to make promises to customers. Don't say you're going to get a piece of code out by Friday unless you're darn sure that piece of code is going to be out there waiting for the customer on Friday, or else you're going to have some fun times ahead.

If you're doing a 90+ hour week, your company has fucked up somewhere.
