Minor Wii U system update now live.

No, but people including me have been having delays when starting games. For example, before the update when I used to boot up my WiiU and start NSMBU, ther would be a delay of about 5-10 seconds during which the OS basically froze and it did nothing. After that time, the NSMBU starting screen finally came up.
Now when I click on the NSMBU icon, it takes 1 second max before the starting screens appears.

Yeah. Also the "Please Wait" when you return to the menu and have a disc in. That too is gone.

If ever there was a device where you hope "improved system stability" really means something in a changelog, it is Wii U.
So true. I've still had a few crashes in the last few months.
A lot seem to involve TVii, and trying to load Netflix/Amazon out of TVii. Every time it was like, "let's see if this function works!" System lock.

You may be trying to be a jerk here, but I've put in plenty of 90-hour+ weeks, (some people have done this for months at a time. ...I couldn't do it.) confined to a room with other team members focused on solely working on one project to meet a deadline because a promise had been made to a customer.

Of course, the trick then becomes, as others have suggested in this thread already, not to make promises to customers. Don't say you're going to get a piece of code out by Friday unless you're darn sure that piece of code is going to be out there waiting for the customer on Friday, or else you're going to have some fun times ahead.

well, not trying to rise a fuss or something, but those are totally different situations.

in your case, I'm sure that 99% of the software you develop, there are contracts, a lot of money involved, and probably your client needs your software for a very specific date and time, and if you don't acomplish that, he's gonna sue your ass off.

not defending nintendo or anything... I'm just saying those are totally different situations and I think your analogy doesn't work.

if your boss is making you work 90 hours a week because someone read in twitter that there's gonna be an update of your app... your boss sucks.

All the butthurt about the summer update getting delayed is annoying as hell. First of all, we don't even know why it has been delayed. It could be a technical problem. Or maybe Nintendo found something worth implementing that requires more time. I can't understand people who are so infuriated by push backs. When Nintendo pushes something back it is done to assure quality. And I'd take quality over a rushed release any day.

Well, it did make a difference in the load times. I thought people might have been just seeing things. I went ahead and timed how long it took to get into the settings menu before and after the update. I ended up with a little over 15 seconds before and a little over 7 seconds after. I am happy with this update even if it isn't the big one we were promised.

They're gonna release the update at the same time as GTA5... it's assured to bomb now. :p

The reason they are doing these updates in the first place is because the OS was rushed and unfinished...

This is why any software is updated, you didn't have the time to implement something or you want to change the way something works. Rapid releases is the gold standard for software, you should always be making updates all the time.

Netflix doesnt hardlock anymore but it still locks up more often than not. At least I can hit the home buttong and close the application now instead of pulling the power plug, though. Sigh.

What is a "finished" OS experience?

I suppose no OS is truly finished, but there are some expectations of stability and performance. I didn't get my Wii U until after the spring update, and switching between games/MiiVerse/etc feels incredibly sluggish to me. My understanding is that it was even worse before. And as you can see in this thread, crashes are still a constant issue.

Will this make my Netflix stop fucking crashing!?

Oh god, this. It's like.. 50/50 chance.

Why the hell should it be a lottery if Netflix works or not? I'm not laying the blame at anyone specifically, but between them they should really sort it out.

What kind of project manager would so badly screw up arranging the promised deliverables for a given iteration that 90-hour+ work weeks is not a blue-moon incident?

I'm assuming the reason for the delay is to remove all the Gamepad requirements out of the OS and firmware. That way they can replace it with a pro controller and start selling $200 system bundles in time to compete with Sony and Microsoft. It's the only way the system is going to stay relevant this holiday, even with a solid line-up of staple first party software.

I'm at a point wishing they hadn't released this whole console at all.

Me too!

I have been sensing sabotage within their own ranks, all the way from the naming of the console, to the specs and the shitty preparations for release. So rushed and half baked, nothing like Nintendo.

I am so disappointed, as I truly love Nintendo and their fantastic games.

Maybe it was, but you can always improve on a system, especially an OS.

Yes. I think the WiiU will go through quite a lot of changes over it's lifetime. Hopefully they are also working on ways to improve the memory footprint to enable games to have use more memory.

What is a "finished" OS experience?

One that doesn't have a 20 second delay between accessing os feeatures?

Reminds me of a guy I know who wished Xbox didn't exist. I also knew one who wished Dreamcast would die.

=> Ignore List

What he might mean is he wants a better console. One with graphics parity to the xbox one and ps4. That would have made more sense because then it would be viable to play multiplatform games on the Wii U. Once PS4 and Xbox one are out, the Wii U won't be getting any of those games.

So badass! O.O

Eh. I'm agreeing with him on that point. The Wii U never seemed to have any direction. I hope they can turn it around like they did with the 3DS but I dunno.

I mean they didn't even prepare for HD development, they jump out around a week ago and go "Lol yeah we need like twice the people to develop games now *laughs*"

There's no denying Nintendo hasn't handled something this bad since the 64.

Edit: I also like how some of you choose to misinterpret his quote and twist into some "I wish Nintendo stopped making consoles!". I think he's just saying they had released a better console and or handled the launch of the thing better so it wouldn't be in the situation it currently is.

Have you tried removing the Netflix save file? I've had to do that a couple of times with Netflix, there is something really wrong with that app. Also, if you have an external HD, you should check that the app is not there, and in internal memory instead.

Did this update break Youtube playback in the browser? I was just trying to throw a video up on my TV and there's just an empty box where the Youtube player should be.

Nope, works just fine for me.

Seriously guys, I'm a bit irked too since I expected new features to come with the summer update but the OS finally feels actually functional to me for the first time since I bought this damn thing. These load times are completely fine for me, I've never personally had any repeated issues with netflix or other apps crashing, and everything finally feels responsive.

More than anything, I'm grateful that they decided to push this part of the summer update early instead of waiting until the "big" one in September. Am I annoyed? Sure. But I'm far more relieved at this point than anything else. The OS startup lag was driving me crazy.

So when exactly do you think they acknowledged they would need more people? 2 Years ago, when they build an immensive new Building, way lager than their current HQ? Sometimes during the last years when they hired 1.000+ new people? Or when the merged their handheld and console R&D teams?

Let me guess, you think they realised it last week when a magazine quoted Miyamoto on a question literally the 3rd time this year und you first read about it.

worked fine for me last night after the update.

Also, I never had the netflix crashing issue, maybe once or twice. My main issue was just the random netflix wont load because I am not connected to the network, even though miiverse data and everything else load fine.

I only used netflix like once or twice so far and haven't had any issues yet.

I use netflix pretty much every other day and I've only had it crash once or twice. Either the reports of crashes are way overblown or it really does differ from person to person. *shrugs*

and the app has never crashed on me once. It stopped working because I have shitty Internet but never a crash.

I hope it fixes the connection to Miiverse / eShop for me. Every other online feature works flawlessly (I stream from Netflix all the time and use the browser often), but half the time I try to open Miiverse or the eShop, I get a connection error. I tried searching on google and didn't find anything...

Hardlocks or crashes are a thing of the past AFAIC. I haven't had one in months. Used to have some in Fifa while playing online, it's gone.

Damn it Nintendo, do more QA on your update...

After installing the update, the damn thing asked to reboot (I did press the reboot button) and then black screen. Gamepad shutdown itself, TV was receiving no signal and the power button (still blue) on the Wii didn't react at all (even with a long press!).

I had to remove the plug.

Luckily, the Wii U rebooted just fine.

Pretty much. It's not even hard to impress me when it comes to Nintendo games, but this console is just one frustration after another. Then small shit like this or some laughable VC reboot almost feels like trolling from Nintendo at this point. It feels like not even their own developers ever wanted this thing and it's just months of silence and eventually some idiotic moves like this occur. Or Iwata giving excuses like the one above, making them look like the clowns of the industry.
The OS also never felt that different to me, I immediately got a hardlock when I've used mine for once a couple of days back.

This was the best update experience yet. Love the background, essentially automatic updates.

Came home from work. Kids were playing games. As they got up to clean up for dinner I checked and update was already downloaded. Just restarted and a few mins later it was done.

Gotta love this background work all automatically handled for this and game updates too.

The summer update probably got delayed because there are rumored features that have not been announced yet that they want to roll in to it.

Id be more than fine with this delay if it turns out that theyve included the rumored video chat app that can be used in any game. Multivideo conference chat was also included in this rumor.

There's a Gaf thread created months ago detailing this.

If they do this, they should also easily add a party chat.

I better be able to turn this shit off. The WiiConnect 24 horse shit fried my launch Wii and I had to get it replaced 3 times!

I tried to use my Wii a few weeks ago to browse Netflix/Amazon to find something to watch (through my PS3 because I need surround sound). The shit is infuriatingly slow.

They delay patches, now?

I see all the please understands were taken. Damn.
