Mario Kart 8 Announced For Wii U

To clarify how Wii U works; it upscales EVERYTHING to 1080p, if that's what you set the system to output as. MOST games will be 720p native though, and as far as I know, this is the case for Mario Kart 8. Also, your TV will always show the signal as 1080p, so this could be causing a lot of misinformation. The only games I know for sure that have been confirmed (by reliable sources) as being 1080p native are Rayman Legends and The Wind Waker HD.

Is it fair to expect a substantial amount of SP content like Sonic Transformed's World Tour mode? I haven't played MK7 so I don't know if it's still just the 4 cups and some time trials or whatever.

Smash 4 was confirmed to be 1080p + 60FPS by Sakurai I believe.

Expect 4 new cups, 4 retro cups, and a mix of about 6 battle arenas.

I'd also like to add how much Sumo dropped the technical ball with the Wii U version of Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed. Not only did it not even reach a native 720p resolution, but it also ran at only 30fps. Mario Kart 8 looks infinately better at a higher resolution AND framerate. It puts that game to shame.

Mk7 was...somewhat rushed so it was missing some things like offlibe vs races, mission mode from mario Kart ds, online tournaments/time trial rankings from Mario kart wii.
and waluigi

Thankfully they have plenty of time to make things right with 8

Sakurai released a 1080p direct feed shot. It's of Bowser and Wii Fit Trainer balancing.

We have all seen PLENTY of games in development deploy nonsensically high-resolution screens that imply absolutely nothing about the actual production game's resolution.

We can safely assume 60fps for SSB and Mario Kart, but I don't think it's fair to assume 1080p for ANY of the Wii U games announced so far, no matter what anyone involved has said. There's just too much confusion in terminology, output resolution vs rendering resolution, etc.

Apparently now native resolution is mentioned on the back of the box, as we've seen with the Pikmin 3 Japanese one. Also, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate renders at 1080p natively.

I wouldn't go that far to be honest.
I'm expecting the known Grand Prix, Time Trials, VS. Race and Battle.
I'd like them to entice(force?) people to use all the characters tho. "Use Toadette in Music Park to unlock the Monster Tires AND gain 100 extra coins" and so on..

Haven't we've seen a lot of 1080p shots of games that ended up maxing at 720p though? I realize Nintendo rarely releases bull shots, but it doesn't mean they never do. Until I read an eyes on report, from a trusted source (Digital Foundry, for example) I'll always assume Wii U games will be running in 720p. I'm not complaining about that, mind you, as I think it looks fine.

The bad part about Sonic racing on Wii U isn't the 30fps, it's the horrifying frame latency. It chugs like a mofo on the more visually complex tracks - technically it is running at 30fps but it stutters like crazy. All the frames bunched up together in spurts.

The difference being that the 1080p screen shows aliasing, whereas all the 720p screens show downscaling artifacts.

Oh, then there's this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-06-11-super-smash-bros-for-wii-u-and-3ds-due-2014

UPDATE: Nintendo has revealed a couple of new Super Smash Bros. details this evening, firstly that the game will run in 1080p.

It was noted during E3 that Noobtendo said it was 1080P native

We really haven't seen nintendo do this though...like ever (as far as I remember). Besides, there are other factors to believe it is 1080p native as other posters have pointed out.

Yeah but we don't know what they MEAN by that, Nintendo's new to all these terms. I remember them promoting some definitely-720p games as 1080p in the past.

Also: anyone gonna link that 1080p smash screen in here or WHAT!

A screenshot that is obviously not a bullshot coupled with confirmation from the dev-team that the game runs at 1080p. Especially when the 720p shots are clearly downscaled, and the 1080p is clearly not.

I've only played Super and 64. Do I need to catch up on the 5 games in-between in order to understand the story of 8 or can I just dive right in there?

At least you can talk. Who are you?

There's a few web comics you'll need to read to understand Yoshi's appearance but other than that you're fine.
lol

I've been trying to find out for a while so: is it correct that Ninty haven't announced pro controller support for WiiU?
I assume people just guess it will (it would be madness if it didn't support it).

I'll admit that, for Smash Bros., it doesn't seem to be doing too much that would prevent it from running in 1080p. I can definately believe it, as it actually looks like a polished up Brawl to me, which isn't a bad thing at all mind you. As for Mario Kart, it looks like there's a lot more going on in terms of visual detail and lighting, so I just can't buy that it's 1080p.

no story in Mario Kart
The other Mario Kart games are really fun but you don't need them to play MK8

Konno confirmed the game will support all the controllers the previous games did before.
Considering the gamepad and the Wii U pro are the only new controllers this gen and the gamepad being confirmed for obvious reasons, it would be dumb to don't support the Wii U pro.

Watch this then tell me its a polished brawl

I mean I will hope, for sure. But you can output all sorts of screens at all sorts of resolutions when you're building a game that's still a year+ away. It is difficult for me to open my heart.

To be fair, people at the e3 2012 nintendo booth didnt know wtf they were talking about and said AC3 was 1080p and said then zzzzreggie said at e3 2011 wiiu games would all run in full hd, but im pretty sure smash 4 is 1080p. It better be anyway considering it looks like brawl upscaled

Don't misunderstand me here; I think the game looks great. I just don't see it as a massive step up, graphically, from the last game in its series in the same vein that Mario Kart 8 is.

The Smash Bros. series always had a steady graphical evolution. This one it's not the exception.
The difference here is that the Mario Kart series looked the same since Double Dash with a few changes here and there so the jump from MKWii to MK8 looks massive
and make people think the rest of Nintendo's games don't look that great compared to it.

imo, all the games look phenomenal in their own way.
HD is like... the best thing that could happen to all the Nintendo IP's.

Doesnt look quite like brawl upscaled at all

Well yea, MK Wii looked terrible

I definatly agree that the distance the Smash series had to go to improve its look was far shorter than that of the Mario Kart series. Brawl looked superb on Wii already. As for Nintendo finally going HD, I am looking foward to seeing how they progress with it. I think what they've shown thus far looks great (Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze blew my mind when I played it in person at the Best Buy demo) but I can definately understand the criticisms I've heard about looking too similar to their older versions. I think Nintendo is just still in the learning process right now. Two, three years from now, they'll be doing some amazing things, I'm sure.

Well yes it does look slightly better and there ae more things going on, but it certainly isnt the show stopper i expected after how amazing brawl looked. On the other hand i wont judge it too harshly because this is probably holiday 2014 so there is a loooong time. I guess there isn't that far you can truly go with a fighting game series with a cartoony look. At least it doesn't look as awful as PSASBR lol

True, theres just some things I appreciate more. Especially in the newer screens like here Link model looks more closer to the CG in the trailer than brawl, that is probably related to artsyle in some way but fact remains.

Pikmin 3 had pretty significant improvements between reveal and launch, as has W101. Considering dev experience at nintendo has matured since then, I don't expect as big of an improvement with MK8 or Smash4 but I do think it'll probably look a fair bit better by launch.

Really? Damn, DK is the only game so far I thought looked like a straight DKCR running in Dolphin. So disappointed.

Pretty much.

The only thing I find quite strange is the lack of any anti-aliasing, it's weird.

I too am a bit confused. All footage makes it look good but not particularly far from DKCR but everyone who has seen it in person says it's magical.
