[Rumor] Inside Gaming: Lower-priced, Kinect-less Xbox One coming summer 2014

If it did happen, all the public would see is two XBone skus. One with Kinect, one without. There is absolutely nothing to be confused about. They've had like 10(or however many) over the course of the 360.

Of course, this means everyone will get confused anyway for some random reason.

True, outside the gaf bubble, joe blow cares not.

Do you think the post launch kinect-less guys will laugh at the launch kinect guys; when the kinect guy is giving voice commands mid game to record his kill? Rough times ahead.

your source is Inside Gaming

I would say more but that's really all that needs to be said

I don't follow them so I don't know much about them, other than that they have a large following on YouTube and Facebook.

Do you know of any rumors they've posted in the past that were false? If so, I can edit them into the OP.

Inside gaming is full of shit, they don't know anything. it's ran by the idiots at Machinima.

They aren't that bad all the time...I feel insider news/rumor wise they are usually a few mins/hours behind other media outlets.

but yea sometimes it's shaky tho

If this is true Microsoft is cutting and running every way possible. Not the strong leadership needed to really support a nearly 10 year old console generation. Sure they've made a lot of mistakes so far. But I don't believe this.

Selling a Kinect less model would be the worst thing MS could do and undermine any potential support.

When it is a guaranteed available resource for a developer it has a MUCH more likelihood of being supported in a meaningful way. If it is only a portion of the user-base, that likelihood drops fast.Having to factor in users who bought the HDD-less Xbox 360 was such a hindrance.

Standard features are the best features.

I highly doubt Microsoft is going to pull the most drastic price drop in a console's first year ever as part of some genius strategy to make a few extra bucks.

they don't post rumors, they don't have sources

the show was started by a random gamers who used to exclusively report halo news, in fact the show used to be called inside halo, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3YeLA1P9SU

and by report Halo news I mean read the forum and post news, The show got traction on Machinima because Mechinima was a massive gaming channel and Halo was and still is a very popular game. Because of increased traffic they changed it up from just reporting Halo news to reported gaming news in general, with again the "news" being articles and forum post from around the internet. There is nothing legitimate about it. This "rumor probably came from N4G, they are no more legitimate that any random gaming blog

Kinect is supported right now with a 30% attach rate. Are there really people crying out about no Kinect support in game ____? Are there any developers crying out about lack of Kinect penetration? You don't want to make a habit out of answering questions nobody asked.

No question they will drop it if it bombs out the gate. Just like how the reversed all the DRM because pre-orders were getting destroyed by the PS4, even though it wasn't "possible" to do so. If the sales are bad they will do anything to reverse it.

No way. Kinect is integral to the Xbox One. The only way I could see this rumor being true is if it's some sort of back-up option Microsoft has in the works for if the One bombs or there ends up being some huge Kinect backlash due to the recent NSA leaks.

you can't put a price on sparks
What a laughable rumor. It makes no sense.

What would they need to have "ready"? If sales are bad they'll just release a sku without Kinect, and drop the price $100. It's not like this would take a year of planning.

the very reason why you say it would "make no sense" -- they would have to gut out everything that is mandatory for kinect to be connected.

then it would make a lot of sense because then it would work.

I gotta think they want Kinect standard in the box so developers use it. Maybe this is a contingency they can go to later on if they still aren't seeing it getting much support.

But they wouldn't be planning to do that now. They'd be taking a wait and see approach, given the Xbox One could still well enough post-180.

The idea that such SKUs are already set for next year is absurd.

Yea Halo 3 and tbh MW2 made Machinima what it is today. Especially MW2.

They are basically a blog/vlog with personality

Not only would that piss off everyone who choked down the $500 forced-Kinect SKU, but it would absolutely destroy the one and only still-existing piece of their original vision for the console. It would also kill their entire justification for forcing Kinect on users in the first place (so devs will take advantage of it knowing everyone has one).

If this happens anytime in the next two years, I'll live stream myself eating my underwear.

Not every game requires it, and the UI can be controlled exclusively with the controller. How is it "integral"?

They also said that the system's drm cannot be easily turned off.

There's no doubt that the system could easily function without Kinect if they modified the firmware to do so.

The question is whether they are already planning to throw Kinect 2.0 under the bus. It took a hell of a lot of negative feedback (manifested in a most tangible way through pre-order figures) for them to nix DRM.

Even at $350 it couldn't compete with Sonys momentum, first party games, indie support, or system specs. Might as well just wait a year and release a more powerful console.

The only reason I see they would roll out Kinectless SKU's down the line is if they just want to try to build a potential Kinect audience during the first year.

But for this to be even remotely possible (or rather, make sense) in the SKU with Kinect would have to be optional. Not like they've been saying so far that XBone won't even work without Kinect connected.

If they kept it mandatory for it to be connected, then the people who have it but don't use it would get pissed as hell that they have to have it connected.

But then if they make Kinect connection optional, then many people might just sell it or jsut get rid of it and then the idea of building a Kinect audience could go out the window.

In other words... it seems like a really bad idea overall and I doubt MS would be this daft. I take this rumor with a mine's worth of salt.

This HAS to happen, and soon. Summer 2014 is probably the longest they can drag things out at $500.

Sales in Europe are going to be a disaster, but they can still recover with a price cut in 6 or 8 months.
