I love the M&L series but was feeling a bit non-plussed over the Dream Team footage. How is the game itself? Shame the sales aren't great.

Poor M&L RPG 4...I feared it'd underwhelm...hope it has legs and good word of mouth :(

Pikmin 3 actually held up well, as did Youkai Watch.

01./00. [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Dream Team # <RPG> (Nintendo) {2013.07.18} (¥4.800) - 99.972 /

- 11.859.811 3DS

VS.

01 [NDS] Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (Nintendo) {2009.02.11} - 220.055 / 745.701

- 25,799,645 NDS

3DS' install base in Japan is more than large enough to not limit sales. I don't think install base played any role in the disparity of sales between Mario and Luigi 3 and 4. Partners in Time launched to higher numbers than M&L4, and the DS was sitting at around 5.5M units when it debuted (though launching in the holiday period helped). There just wasn't as much interest in a Mario and Luigi game this time for whatever reason.

Dragon's Crown will be big, way over 100.000 units first week.

I remember a lot of expectations for the predictions here were way below 100k FW. I found that weird given how well Muramasa did on the Vita alone and this being a multiplatform release along with being an all-new game.

Pretty solid holds for Pikmin 3 and the Wii U. Wish they had something else to release between now and TW101.

A lot of people think Nintendo's problem is with the Wii U hardware, specifically the Gamepad, but I believe it has more to do with their Wii U 1st party software. They've admitted to being behind on the the HD learning curve, so I'm concerned they'll be unable to adjust their preliminary 1st party software strategy quickly enough to accommodate current market realities, specifically the market's slight repudiation of Nintendo's blue ocean titles. It's like trying to make a U-turn with an oil tanker only to discover that by the time they've finally hit 180 the generation is at its twilight.

The issue really is that they can't go to the well again game and expect the same success (i.e. Brain Training, Wii Fit, probably Wii Sports to a lesser extent), particularly when the market has been saturated by a ton of copycat games. It's not really a blue ocean anymore when the idea's already been ran into the ground by 3rd parties. There's a billion fitness games, cheap Brain apps on phones, etc.

The more gamey stuff like Animal Crossing seems to hold up better since those are more unique to Nintendo.

If they have another great new idea I would expect it to do well, but it's got to be a new one.

Anyone else in J-gaf seein a lot of vitas popping up? I think I've seen more vita users tan 3ds for the past 3 weeks. Stores are bringing the vita section up front too

I want to see the % split between platforms. The game is really expensive for a handheld game (>8000Y and same price as the PS3 version).

What would be a good ratio. I would say 2:1 to the PS3 version would be ok but given how Vanillaware games sold on the Vita, I secretly hope for a better ratio.

You're missing at least Skylanders (JP exclusive Wii U version of the original).

Hope the Fall Conference announces the goods.

Edit: DK as well.
It was already released at the Pikmin's week. I don't know where people is getting the info that it's going to be released in two months.

Anxious to see how Lego will perform.

3 more games than launch, I can finally see the momentum Iwata was talking about.

So Skylanders didn't even sell 4,155 units?

In all honestly, it was only sold on one store. None of the versions (and was released on almost anything) cracked the top 50.

that's it, we need another Square nintendo mario collab that isn't basketball (even though the ds game was pretty decent and one of the better looking games on the system somehow).

Several members of Alphadream include former Square employees who worked on Super Mario RPG. So, in a sense, the M&L games are sort of spiritual successors to that game.

2:1 would be quite good actually. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 on PS3/Vita was like 4:1 in week 12.
Dragon crown is a new and niche IP though, so i don't know how this will affect

I actually liked the original Tomato Adventure :)
Surprised by the fact that it didn't get the Western release, until they made M&L from it.

That makes it sound as if they took TA gameplay and reskinned it with M&L which isn't the case at all. M&L had completely new and unique gameplay, revolving around controlling two characters simultaneously in real time.

AlphaDream are mostly ex Square staff members who worked on SMRPG so it made sense they would go on to make M&L but TA was quite different. You also had two characters like in M&L but they differed mostly in how they played. During the round-based battles you would control either one and pick from a number of mini games, as well as a difficulty, to do an attack and depending on success at the chosen mini game damage would vary. The higher the difficulty the higher the max damage but if you failed it was close to a miss.

The West missed out on Tomato Adventure. Period.

02./02. [3DS] Youkai Watch <RPG> (Level 5) {2013.07.11} (¥4.800) - 29.102 / 82.756 (-46%)

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team didn't sell as much as I'd hoped. I expect legs, though.

Youkai Watch has a great hold. Pikmin is doing okay.

The bolded (six games) were commissioned by Nintendo, funded by Nintendo, and Nintendo staff worked on them to various degrees. I would consider those "first-party games" even if they weren't 100% made by a Nintendo internal studio.

It's more like:

Six games (Nintendo 1st-party)
Two games (3rd-party with some form of Nintendo partnership)
One game (Japanese 3rd-party without any exclusivity deals / partnership)
Five games (Western 3rd-party without any exclusivity deals / partnership)

Tecmo Koei's "Romance of the Three Kingdoms XII" is literally the only announced Japanese third-party game coming this year for the Wii U that isn't the result of some form of Nintendo influence.

Does Vita have any really huge games planned for it within the next year? Are people expecting Phantasy Star Online to be big despite also being on PC?

These numbers are roughly what I expected. PS3 is starting to get pretty low too. It'll definitely pass 10mil by the end of the year but I gotta wonder how much farther it'll go beyond that. It's definitely no PS2.

Are there actually any retail Japanese third party Wii U games beyond that and Yakuza out of curiosity?

Not just this year I mean, but announced at all.

I'm discounting Sonic since as you said, Nintendo obviously signed a deal.

It's been years since the PS3 came out. The software that's selling is selling to an established audience. Hardware sales aren't really important to software sales at this point in the lifecycle.

Pretty much the reason also why Sony is so unwilling to drop the price.

I would consider Yakuza under the umbrella of the Nintendo / Sega partnership as well.

And no, I don't think there is a single Japanese third-party game announced for the Wii U outside of Tecmo Koei's venture.

The only Japanese support the Wii U is getting is from the Nintendo ecosystem. Everything else is Western.

I guess we could technically even consider Capcom's remaining downloadable game to be Western considering it is being made by WayForward...

Isn't that just a slightly enhanced rerelease of the latest iteration of the game, which came out for the Wii U in December?

Mario & Luigi starting less than half as well as the third game. :(

Could this gap be entirely due to the lower install base?

Alternatively people could be getting a bit tired of the series. I'm sitting it out personally for this reason. Excellently crafted games, but not challenging enough and I'm just done with the formula.

Oh, I thought you were talking about retail.

Technically, Namco Bandai has announced "Pac-Man Museum" for the Wii U. But that just consists of old games...that's about it for Japanese support.

Yep...but it's still a retail release with new content. That's something...right?

So what's the deal with this game? I recall from the screen shots that it looked highly polished. Any reviews, impressions?

I guess this is the big negative with region locking. In the NDS days we would have gotten a ton of news about just about any highly polished early Japanese NDS title.

It's crazy how the 3DS still went up from last week. Was there a bundle or something?
Yes a special edition Luigi 3DS with M&L preinstalled on it. Does anyone know if sales of the bundle are included in the game sales? I've been lurking/posting in media create threads for years now and I know this always gets asked so I feel bad in not remembering.

So on the "only two days" note, here are the week over week Famitsu drops after correcting my mistake:

Pikmin: 73.8%
Pikmin 2: 80.8%
Pikmin 3: 69.7%

I was wondering if somebody know if the drop in the second week of sale for Pikmin 2 was caused by shortages: after all, the following week it sold more and the number of copy sold in the first + second week is very close to 200000, wich seem a possible first shipment

I really think there is just general mario fatigue going on with ML4. Hope that doesnt hurt 3d world later this year but honestly mario needs some breathing room. Release some sports games, but the actual core games like platformers and rpgs needs a rest

Also i dont buy the userbase excuse for pikmin. More likely its been 9 years and their is less interest

Oh and vita is holding well with Dragons Crown. There is no chance wiiu will outsell vita this year. I thought it could with the holidays but wiiu's lineup is just sooo bad.

Like its really hard to overstate how baaaaad the lineup is. The best thing you can say is that its not the worst thing weve ever seen like vita 2012

Toukiden still going great. PSV version still above. Youkai Watch doing decent too with legs.

TLOU is not too shabby either. Should be well over 200k LT in Japan.
