FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

It was never an issue when Microsoft announced it, and it's not an issue now IMO. As long as they use it effectively to craft a cohesive content rich OS experience.

As people have said, MS has shown why they need that much. Kinect features, 32 person (or something like that) Skype chat, live tv overlay, 3 os's.

I feel that's why ps4 has gained so much momentum... we don't care about all if that and wanted a powerful GAMING system. With this news, if so many resources are devoted to the os, why not go with the company that has put the os as a priority and will probably do a better job at it.

Like I stated earlier its not that easy.. The OS itself probably doesn't use more than 1GB of that memory, most of the memory reserved is for external Apps. The further down the road they get the harder it is to take away memory from a reserved space, since Developers are counting on that memory for their apps.

Do they really need all apps to be loaded at once though? Seems silly. What kind of Apps are we actually looking at too?

I have a hard time believing this. It just seems completely strange to go from 4GB with 512MB reserved for the OS to 8GB and 3.5GB reserved. I'm not taking is as fact until Sony comments.
I agree, but it is a bit strange that the OS reserve is the one thing we haven't been clear about since EVER!

We knew when it was 4GB they had 512MB reserved for the OS, but since the upgrade to 8GB's we haven't heard shit about this, just people speculating that they might reserve 1GB or 1.5GB's for the OS.

Admission by silence?

I hope not. It's a system for gamers right? It's a game developers dream right? 7GB's or go home.

Fantastic, too bad sony is complete ass at developing os compared to microsoft (they are a software company after all) i want extensive multitasking and a fledged out os feature wise. Hope sony's os matches xbone feature wise, but microsoft really led this gen in terms of features.

I am going to wait for confirmation. People saying this isn't a big deal, you do know having 4.5GB ram allocated to games to 6.5GB or ram is huge.

Its the ammount Sony thinks they need.
That said it is a whole lot...

FreeBSD is really lean but they must have done a tonne of work on it

People, its not just the OS. Its needed for apps to run while you are playing a game, running several apps at once and to be able to suspend the game in RAM to do something else. Its probably also needed for the "play as you download" features

Not loaded at once, but actually running in the background, recording video, voice chat, whatever they are coming up with.

This is nonsense, FreeBSD doesn't consume that many resources. And remember 7 months ago PS4 had only 4GB, i would say this is false.

What I find really disappointing is how despite the upgrading the RAM by 100% Sony has still managed to fall behind xbone in sheer amount. And while GDDR5 will outclass DDR3 it is still a very surprising situation nonetheless.

How could Sony not have learned their lesson from the days of PS3 when it comes to footprint that they are now still trying to do the same with PS4 by sequestering anywhere from 31.25% to 43.75% of main memory. Deja vu.

Its funny because you and hundreds of others believed their bullshit this time around. They want the same thing MS does. They just wont come out and say it

And what bullshit would that be junior? We all knew that the OS was going to be around 1GB. Just not a whopping 2.5+1GB

Because "games, games, games" kinda goes out the window if this is true I guess?

I guess, but Sony would have to be an idiot to release a game only focus console in 2013, while Microsoft brings their advertising blitz about the One being basically the iPhone for TVs. Even the original PS3 had the, "it only does everything" tag line.

They are supposedly going to make a statement if the other jump the shark thread is to be believed.

3.5GB OS is fine, you can fit the PS1, PS2, PS3, Vita OSes, Home, Browser, PSEye

ahh crap, it won't still add up to 3.5GB

Yeah, alot of stuff about the PS4 has been wrong/overstated. I'll wait for some confirmation.

But man, the Schadenfreude rippled through the internet like a disturbance in the force.

remember this is not about the OS, this is about all the crap that will be running along side it.. 15min Video recording, Voice chat, app switching.. etc etc

Can games really be fun with only 5,5 GB DOUBLE DRAGON 5 RAM ??? I for one am deeply concerned.

Reminds me of this:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=586756
For Adam personally, his “favorite moment was getting to announce to the whole developer community that we had double the RAM to 8GB of GDDR5,” because they did originally have 4GB of GDDR5 on the system.

Recounting the story of how they went from 4GB to 8GB, Adam was actually at Gearbox (Borderlands), with Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox, telling him, “If you go with 4GB of GDDR5, you are done.” Following that statement, Boyes says that the entire room of about 30 people added in that “you guys, you never listen, you’ve never been good at this stuff.”

After hearing this, Adam says he had a mini-breakdown, and it wasn’t until he reflected on this and asked himself the question, “Are we going to be the best console in every single category?” before things started moving, because “the answer used to be no.”

So, Adam went back to the developers about the possibility of doing 8GB of RAM, getting responses like “that would be incredible.” He then took all the feedback to Tokyo, got the thumbs up, and the rest is history.
Somebody is definitely full of shit, either DF or Sony. There's no way they went through all of that for faster app switching and running more apps in the background and leaving the game devs pretty much where they were before.

Hell, the Vita OS handles pretty decent mutlitasking with ~100 MB reserved.

Why would Sony go for 3.5 GB reserved RAM when Xbox has 3GB RAM? Why even more? And why upgrade to 8GB when most of this upgrade will be spent on the OS? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Oh, and meanwhile on the DF twitter channel:

INFINITE RAM!! Instead of simply making a tweet that Microsoft said the goal is to not have a limit for indie devs, they retweet this. Smh.

Seems like a bunch of memory for very basic functions.

I guess we should wait for Sony to speak though. Some clarity would be nice.

In the other thread didn't it say that Sony wanted to clear something up with them before they posted the article. Or am I confused. Really strange if this is all just a inside source speculation special.

Someone brought up a good point in the other thread. This can potentially be Sony future proofing their console. They were caught with their pants down last generation, and due to a lack of foresight, were unable to really change their OS through out the entirety of the generation. This is especially important considering the planned length of these generations, and as the past two generations have shown, the industry can change quite a bit over that duration so it's important to set aside enough system specs to make those necessary changes if needed.

How has a dev not talked about this yet? Considering this thing is most likely out in just a few months, someone has to have known about this already, if it's legit.

Would something like this be under NDA?

They did increase the available amount to developers by a huge margin, matching what Ms was giving to xbox one developers, and at the same time allowed then to be well positioned to fight Ms on the non games field.

I'd say, even as it is the ram upgrade was justified. Otherwise they would have a system with less ram available for games that couldn't match the non gaming features of the competition.
I think ymmv on the huge margin increase in game RAM.

If we go with the low end figure that doesn't require "some work" to achieve, one is led to believe that Sony is incurring an additional ~$45 per unit in materials to increase:
  • Game RAM from 3.5GB to 4.5GB
  • System OS RAM from 0.5GB to 3.5GB
With likely up to 3GB of that OS RAM allocation sitting unused at launch.

That's millions upon millions of dollars to future proof the system's OS reserves and give a relatively minor 1GB boost to the game side.
