Gunman Clive developer (beril :D) working on a Zelda-inspired game for the 3DS

Hey a topic about me. Now I feel special

Cool, I wonder if he's going for a cartoonish look like Gunman Clive.

It won't look like anything like Gunman Clive. I have a new weird artstyle in the works. From a techical perspective it's pretty crazy but I've lost all objectivity in term of aesthetics, so I don't know how people will react or if they'll will even notice it.

Show us a sneak peak of the early designs you're considering beril ;P

I've been contemplating releasing some screenshots in the indie dev thread soon, but somehow I don't feel screenshots really does it justice, so I'm not really sure how to do the initial reveal. Videos might work better but I don't have the hardware to capture from the 3DS and the PC build is a bit out of sync. Also it's probably still a bit too early.

Someday, the people who shout "STAR TROPICS" in every nintendo franchise revival thread will inspire an indie dev to make a version of that game.

I actually played Star Tropics for reference the other day but didn't really enjoy it... that tile based movement and weird jumping really ruins the game

Hope beril's brother is doing the music again, he's super talented!

Yes he is... he's actually much further along with the soundtrack than I am with the game... Kindof puts pressure on me to deliver

Hmm, Gunman Clive was alright by me but this is gonna have to be a far meatier experience to be a decent game that doesn't feel like a mobile low budget low cost copycat, does he have the resources for that?

Sorry, not really. I'm trying to keep it small. I don't have the stamina to work on a giant project for several years, and I'm planning to keep working alone (apart for the aforementioned soundtrack). So I'm aiming for about the same scope as Gunman Clive. Although in a a different genre, the playtime might automatically be somewhat padded.

If he needs to kickstart his game, count me in.

I have already shared my opinions about kickstarter on gaf... But no you won't have to give me money until the game is out

Can't wait to get an idea of the game, i really enjoyed Gunman Clive, i hope the new game is as fun (and as cheap :p ) as GC.

Hoping for the best Beril, i am really excited about this.

Hooray! Gunman Clive is the best $2 game on the eShop. I didn't mind it was a bit on the easy side, seems like so many other eShop games are crazy hard.

Actually I'm sure Beril already said it months ago... on NeoGAF!
GAF > Internet > GAF isn't it?

Yea I've been saying that for quite some time, but in this case the source isn't really gaf. In the interview they're referencing a tweet I made after the last Nintendo Direct

Really excited for Link to the Past 2. But now my next game will inevitably be compared to that once I announce it...

You developing a whole Zelda inspired game by your self? Or is someone helping you out?

Yes, I'm working alone apart for the music. It might be somewhat unrealistic but I hoping it will work out. I'm aiming for a rather old school experience and a small one at that, to go with a low price point. If you look at the original Zelda for example, there is not really a lot of content.

I was hoping that my new rendering technique would make the art assets quick and easy to produce, similar to Gunman Clive, but so far I haven't really achieved the speed I was hoping for and there's still many issues to be worked out, so there's a lot of trial and error in terms of asset creation.

I really enjoyed Gunman Clive so I can't wait to see what Beril has in store next.
I want a bonus mode that's as awesome as
duck
mode in GC, though that might be hard to achieve. I also hope that time/skill based ''achievements'' will return; they greatly increased the replayability and my enjoyment of GC.

And please Beril, include more save files; any game should have at least as many as ''number of characters'' * ''number of difficulty levels'' +1.

What I think set GC apart from other indie games was the 3D graphics plus the rendering technique. Though it helped that the core game and music were good, the graphics are what really caught my attention. Therefore, I am interested in seeing what you have cooked up now.

Day 1 from me as well, this man has already proved himself worthy of it for me.

And let's be honest too.... dat price tag.

Good luck!

Also this Atari cowboy reminds me of Gunman Clive.

Going from a game like Gunman Clive to a Zelda-like sounds like there's a bit on your plate now. Good luck!

Put me in the interested crowd after playing Gunman Clive. GC was a great, cheap, short, and simple game, I have no problem with the latter 2 if it includes the first 2.

Asset wise you can always go for 3d tileset thing. But man dungeon planing and everything takes a long time. I remember working on a fan game, creating a dungeon, which took me a month or so, and then throwing it completely out of the window, and taking another month or so to recreate it.

On the otherhand even though it was a long process it was actually really fun, I wouldn't have minded finishing the rest of it (it if wasnt for school and now uni).

Looking forward :)

Looks nice. What are you using to make it in?

Also, is the look of the main character final? He looks a bit plain.

This. How far along is it? The environments obviously are empty, but the character also looks a bit plain/uninspired at the moment... plus an 80s mullet? lol

But otherwise, very promising.

I have my own engine, same as I used in Gunman Clive

The game isn't very far along at all; it's been going slowly and I've been lazy but the art shown is pretty much as good as final I think. The lack of detail is partly by choice and partly because it just doesn't work with the super weird rendering techniques I'm using.

I've had a lot of doubts and second thoughts back and forth regarding the artstyle, so I felt I needed to release something and just get some reactions before I went insane with built up anxiety about it.

Dear beril, I'd like to inform you that, considering all the suggestions I'm receiving in my "eshop summer break suggestions" topic, I'll buy Gunman Clive this week.
And looking at that promising gif, I can say that I'll take a close look also to your new game.

:)

It's just you and your brother doing the music on this right?

Speaking of which, can I help with the music? (or at least try to?) I've been writing some Zelda inspired themes lately. I'd do it for free of course, because I have no published titles under my belt to show for myself yet.

There's something that bothers me about the artstyle, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is; something about the way it's a little too bumpy on the edges:

The right edge, here; it's too ordered for my liking. I've no idea if it's viable, but I'd suspect it'd work better for me if the 'brush strokes' followed the line of the polygon.

A more minor niggle: The cave in the second image isn't quite right, in my eyes; looks more like a drawing of a cave painted on the wall than an actual cave. I think it's possible because the camera moves horizontally past it yet the view of the cave doesn't shift accordingly. Would it be possible to indent it slightly relative to the cliff face? That could make a difference.

The most frustrating thing: Other than those irritants, I really like the artstyle; in principle, I love it; just those things do take me out of it a little. It's also worth bearing in mind that it might look a lot better in 3D, of course.
