Visual Downgrade In Next-Gen Tech Demos Going From PC To Consoles?

There seems to be a big downgrade from the demos we've seen earlier running on PC and their counterparts on the consoles now. What's the reason for this?

Exhibit A: Watch_Dogs

Also will Agni's Philosophy look as good running on PS4 as this?

The demos almost universally ran on GTX 680s, which are vastly more powerful than either the PS4 or XB1's GPUs.

Is that Deep Down second picture serious

It looks like a PS360era game,not even next-gen

Concept video and in-development current build footage without polish or being a vertical slice.

In regards to all of this, I would judge until everything is shipped and available since a lot changes during development.

Where is that second Deep Down picture from before? I haven't seen that.

Looks terrible.

I thought the original Watch Dogs showing wasn't 'the PC version' but merely a teaser running on a PC? So a tech demo basically?

Same with all your other examples.

So no, I'm not worried.

You can build a PC that consumes over 1000 watts with 1000's of dollars worth of components. The PS4 is under 200 watts and $400.

Consoles are not about state-of-the-art performance. They're a trade-off between performance, cost, you name it.

Well, they're launch window games, so obviously. In a few years we'll have games out there that make these games look aged.

I'd say that the second photo is wrong for the comparison because they released a newer/updated one. Still not like the PC one, but better than the bottom picture. Just indicated it was rushed/just a demonstration of the engine running on PS4 hardware if you asked me as it had a lot of changed stuff from the PC demo anyway..

Seeing how inFAMOUS: Second Son looks in action erases any fear I have for next-gen console gaming.

to be fair, watchdog is from ubisoft. they always underdeliver when it comes to initial release trailers to actual release (see GRAW, AC, and watch dogs). expect the same to happen to the division.

That's nice. Now what does that have to do with the topic?

PS4 and XB1 are very weak.

Back in 2011, Epic was asking for the GPUs in the consoles to be at least 2.5 TFLOPS. That's what was powering Samaritan at 1080p/30 back in 2011. PS4 got kinda close with 1.84, but that's still 660 GFLOPS weaker. If that's not significant then neither is XB1's -600 GFLOPS to PS4. Then you have to factor in PS4 and XB1's pathetic CPUs into the equation. I'm fucking let down, man. I should get my $900 back on my PS4/XB1 pre-orders and just put it towards a fucking PC. Just never built a gaming PC and dedicated my game-playing time to consoles.

Watch dogs looks about the same as the reveal tbh. Any difference is probably because a lot of the early games are based a lot more on with raw power of which PC has more.

The same cycle repeats every gen :
- Impressive real-time demos are shown. People express their amazement.
- First wave of semi-competent games are revealed. Same people bitch and moan.
- middle and last-gen software rivals and exceeds the first trailers. Phrases like :
If you told me we'd witness such a game late in the console life cycle, I'd never believed you!
get thrown around...

Rince and repeat.

Call me when ND, Santa Monica and PD uncover their next-gen projects (343 Studio and Rare for Microsoft). Until then, I'm not to forge an opinion...

Epic was asking for the GPUs in the consoles to be at least 2.5 TFLOPS

Let's see Epic try to conceive a better machine with the physical, thermal and monetary constraints hardware manufacturers have to deal with.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
UE4 is a little bit deceptive, because it was originally demonstrated exclusively on PC hardware, and the engine itself has (apparently) seen chops to the rendering since the original debut, across all platforms, due to performance issues.

Man that new Deep Down trailer made me sad. Including looking like shit i feel whoever approved that monster design need to die by firing squad.

Where does the Old Man Sorcerer (forgot the actual name) demo fit into all of this? The one that was revealed at E3. Wasn't that running on some in-game engine on the ps4's hardware? That looked better than any other tech demo I've seen so far.

Honestly I think that we got lucky this round, last gen with 360 and PS3 things started in a really rough way with graphics.
It's useless to pretend that we won't laugh about these games in a couple of years, it's always like that. Developers need time to learn how to use these new systems, right now we're only seeing super high end PC games being quickly ported on weaker console hardware without optimizations. That's the only way to make it in time for launch.

Can't imagine Deep Down looks like that new trailer, it's such an absurd downgrade and almost looks like half the areas shown aren't even textured. They released all those tech demos in conjunction so one can only imagine it's still planned to be a show piece.

Exhibit C: Deep Down

Also will Agni's Philosophy look as good running on PS4 as this?

The new Deep Down trailer was a rapid succession of footage resulting in unfavorable compression and it wouldn't rush at making any allegations there.

Agni was said to be running on the PS4 at the PS4 meeting.

How do I know if my PC is better than next gen consoles? I mean I'll be buying games with a PC focus on my PC probably, but should I buy Call of Duty: Ghosts on PS4 or my PC. Is there a good way of figuring this out before you purchase?

My videocard is 6970M if that helps

Deep Down has nothing to do with the power of consoles against pc..

There will be a big budget problem this gen, and pc won't change anything to that.
We'll have many games that will blow those demos in some years, on console.

I can already see a part of Gaf being way too happy to create a "next gen console are underpowered and will never have good graphics" legend lol.

For exemple, doing a FF with Agni's Philosophy production value would be impossible for current SE. It has nothing to do with computing power.

What we are getting is modern bullshots but in video form.

You cant trust anything you see at E3 anymore.. specially from Ubisoft.

Also I doubt it will look as good on PC either.. they will look downscaled across the board cause their expectations were to high for them. Look at Farcry 3 demo at E3 and what finally came out.

Comes down to publishers drumming up excitement so you can purchase new hardware on promises that they have no intention of keeping. It's been working pretty well for them seeing as people are super excited for games that aren't playable at all.

Absolutely agree it's all about the budget and that is an issue especially for Japanese developers but SE is the only one who could pull off something like this. FF XV looks like a massive production and a possible FF XVI in Agni's full fledged next gen engine is not out of the question. Of course it's up to the commercial performance of FF XIV and FF XV.

Again, there was a lot of blind hate at SE for showing the same tech demo at the Sony Meeting back in February but lots of people overlooked the moment of importance was when they said "it is running on the PS4" (instead of a high end PC). Best display of next gen capabilities so far.

Even then, at this year's Siggraph, Infiltrator was running at 30-50fps on a high end rig using 2 Titans.
