Xbox One’s Game DVR, SmartMatch, NFL, TV Guide Restricted To Xbox Live Gold Members

So... here we go:

Game DVR, the Xbox One’s system for recording and uploading footage from users’ games will be restricted to Xbox Live Gold members.

This comes from an Xbox Live features page on Xbox.com, which lists features like SmartMatch, NFL on Xbox, Xbox One’s TV Guide feature and, crucially, its Game DVR feature as Xbox live Gold specific features.

We contacted Microsoft to get confirmation that Game DVR features would indeed be limited to Xbox Live Gold members. Microsoft responded, saying “I can confirm that Game DVR features will be available to Xbox Live Gold members only.”

SmartMatch also? meh

edit: MP gaming is also behind gold ... so it makes sense. I'm stupid.

So we are moving from arbitrarily locking online features that are free on other platforms behind a paywall to also doing the same for offline features.

How do you like that taste of the corporate wet dream cloud computing / software as a service future?

Not surprised. I expect Sony to do the same thing with PS4 Playstation Plus.

That was not among the Plus functionality revealed at E3, only multiplayer play was.

I assume it automatically uploads the footage in the cloud with nothing left on the HDD cause if not, that makes absolutely no sense. It's an offline feature.

This is pretty shocking to me actually...

I'm kind of surprised too.

"Please pay us to help us promote our games for us"

?

Really hope Sony isn't so silly. If you're uploading to a third party service it doesn't cost Sony or MS a dime. Even if it did, this is social promotion for their content and platform.

I keep seeing this NFL on Xbox. Does this mean I can watch the NFL games directly on my Xbox or does it mean it supports NFL Sunday ticket which I would still have to buy?

I'm assuming it's the latter but as someone without cable, it would be real nice if it was the former.

Isn't PS4's game recording behind a paywall as well?
I don't know if it's been confirmed or not, more like "no comment" from Sony.

Wow, that's crazy. And dumb.

And there's no way Sony will do that with the PS4. The share button is on the stinking controller. They aren't going to block the functionality of a button on the controller for certain people.

It's sad, sad news.

Maybe the direct upload, but nothing else should be behind Gold that don't use their servers.

Sunday Ticket is only avilable on DirecTV.

I believe the NFL stuff is just highlights, a score center thing, fantasty football integration etc.

Half expected this because of their history but hoped they wouldn't after the whole backlash nonsense

MS really doesn't make a console for people who want to just play Single Player games do they?

Not bad news at all. I don't expect it to be any other way. I'll be shocked if sony's is included in the free plan.

I dont

Otherwise it goes against the whole idea of having a share button on the controller to begin with. They dont expect every single person to get PS+ even if it is required for multiplayer.

Sony has already said it will be avaiable for everyone, since there is hardware in place this feature.

No MS charging a 500$ box, with specific hardware for DVR and TV I won't use...

Why should Gold be necessary if I'm recording a single player game and uploading it online? Really?

It seems everyone is assuming people will only record multiplayer gameplay footage....

Yeah I really don't get it. If this was Microsoft pre-180, then it was completely expected. But yeah, putting something like this behind the paywall just wasn't something to be expected of microsoft right now imo.

Wow i didnt actually expect this to be stuck behind live, kinda makes me wonder what other new stuff is behind the paywall.

Unprecedented partnership, millions of dollars

Some features include some stuff they're excited about

All I remember is you can track fantasy stats as you watch games on the Xbox but only using the nfl fantasy site which is just the worst possible way to play fantasy every single year
