And since when you can't use the internet without Gold? You can download demos, games, videos without Gold, so it's not like Requires Internet = Gold feature.

You can download demos, but you're getting them one week late without Gold: The Xbox's internet functionality is very restricted if you don't have a subscription.

and you'll still need gold also to watch netflix

If it's uploading that's restricted, yeah, I can believe it. If recording is restricted, that's colon balaclava.

If you have to pay a monthly sub to make use of the dedicated encoding hardware in the console... that's urethra pancakes.

No pre existing offensive phrase would cover it.

The Xbox One is built from the ground up intended to be used with Xbox Live. Do people really plan on buying this thing without using LIVE? This is a non issue

So since only around 30 million 360 owners have live gold, MS's potential userbase is 30 million people?

Why should Gold be necessary if I'm recording a single player game and uploading it online? Really?

It seems everyone is assuming people will only record multiplayer gameplay footage....
This. A lot of people make walkthrough vids, hopefully Sony is smart enough to realize those Youtube vids are a form of advertising.

I don't believe that shit for a second. They aren't that stupid, right?

They should be lowering the barrier if they want this thing to succeed as a media-box. Not add paywalls.

Of course it will. These things are server-intensive...

No they aren't, recording is done totally locally, I assume it defaults to automatic cloud uploading but something like that should be possible to disable. Has nothing to do with internet or servers or cloud or anything. The box records your game to the HDD.

Why is this a big deal again? Who the fuck would buy an XB1 without gold, or a PS4 without PS+ anyways? These are next-gen consoles selling at a premium. If you can't afford 40-50$ per year, you should maybe reconsider buying these consoles in the first place and put your money elsewhere.

So I guess it's been confirmed they are also keeping free media apps behind a paywall for a second time and not changing that aspect at all?

If so, wow.

One of the MS execs, I think Marc Whitten, said so in an interview after the initial reveal.

Many Fighting game and hack and slash players don't play online yet would love the DVR functionality. People enjoy offline games and would like to access applications that are free on every other device ever.

With Sony's stance on what's behind the PS+ wall (only multiplayer in pay titles), you would think MS would be scaling back what they're requiring Gold for, not stacking even more things on top.

You have to pay in order to play "Free to play" games...

What an utterly ridiculous thing to say.

Many people buy an Xbox just to play single player games and at no time go online or have the need to access friends lists.

Why should these people not be able to record their gameplay just for their own use? Part of the product they are buying is that it is a DVR and they are being locked out of it.

They're positioning it as a media box and then placing all of the media features behind a paywall...when they're free to access on seemingly all other devices.

It doesn't make any sense.

This isn't a surprise at all.

When you look at the people who record gameplay footage....do you see them NOT being Gold members? I highly doubt anyone who is Silver has any intentions on recording footage and uploading it.

Are you saying that you feel the thread shouldn't have been made, since we should have known this was going to happen?

No these threads to made. The same way that you need to check your lotto ticket after the drawing. You're 99.9999999% sure of the outcome, but you're hoping to be surprised.

With so many people 'shocked' about this news, I have to wonder, were you really planning on picking up an XB1 without Gold? I feel like at this point, Gold is such a necessary feature, that it makes the Xbox pretty useless without it.

Unless of course you're not planning on picking one up at all, and then your genuine shock is justified...I guess. It is Microsoft after all.

I never payed for online multiplayer in my life on any platform and have uploaded game footage.

Had gold on my 360 for a year or two maybe?

Last 3 or 4 years though just used it for exclusive single player games

So yeah not looking to get a sub for X1 as I'll get one on my PS4

Sucks for me I guess

This was expected. This service uses Xbox Live cloud services which offers unlimited storage. MS wasn't going to give this out for free.

Edit: The big shocker to me is that the TV Guide feature is also behind a paywall. The hell, Microsoft?

So it's looking like the Xbox One is going to be pretty much useless without a Live subscription.

I think this all but confirms some type of cell-phone like subsidized pricing for launch or shortly thereafter. If Live is going to be so tightly integrated into this machine, then the service should be made easily available.

Me. I enjoy single player games, so why should I pay for a service I have no use for?

Does MS actually host these videos themselves?

Or is it YT/FB upload like on PS4?

Anyone know?

They said that clips you save are automatically added to the cloud and can be accessed from anywhere.

Other than that, i think that specific apps like twitch (and I assume FB and YT too) can upload directly to their services.

Wow that sucks, at the very least I expected this feature to be free, I mean why not?
And it very concerning that at $500 The xbo is pretty much useless unless you have Gold. $500 is a lot of money, MS should be giving non gold members something for that kind of money.

Also, with the share feature designed into the PS4 controller I don't expect Sony to make the same dumb move and put DVR behind a pay wall.

Sony shouldn't charge for that, at least as far as we know how Share works.

Microsoft's word on DVR is that the videos are stored in his cloud.
With PS4 if you stream you use Ustream servers, if you share you use Facebook/Youtube servers.
They shouldn't charge.

Well, Sony confirmed the feature is free.

With that said, you can share your recorded videos with your friends through PSN. It doesn't look like it is hosted on youtube facebook, or youtube in all cases. So, sony must be storing shared videos somewhere.

The heck? if I only play single player RPG's and platformers, why the hell would I need a subscription?
