OXM: We're holding out for Crackdown 3.

Spencer: I'm going to bite my tongue.

OXM: We still believe!

Spencer: I do too. I do too.

The whole article covers some more insight on Forza 5, Quantum Break and Killer Instinct.

Quantum Break:
The mechanic revolves around time, and people who can stop time. The technical capability that we have with the platform really starts to shine here. If I'm playing, say, Halo, and all of a sudden the letterbox comes in to restrict the screen, I can set the controller down because I get this set-piece that plays out that I don't interact with.

We do that because we want you to pay attention to the story, but also because we're using all the horsepower of the platform to render what you see. We're turning off the AI, we're turning off any level of control or animation for characters that you don't see, we're purging memory. Then when we letterbox out we load the game engine back in and you play it.

In Xbox One you can interact with those set-pieces directly, and play in them. This isn't just that the scenes are more graphic. In the gameplay segment, there's the huge tanker hitting the bridge, you see the little warp effect which is the players actually impacting time. And they freeze the tanker halfway through ramming through this bridge. And that bridge scene, as its going on, you're actually playing in that bridge scene. Because we have the RAM, the GPU, CPU capability, we can take something that used to be completely passive and allow you to play through that scene.

The enemy AI, the enemy pathing, all of those will actually take place while that gameplay is frozen in time. And you can freeze that at any point; right at the beginning when the tanker hits the bridge, after it's torn all the way through, so it puts you in complete control of these huge set-pieces that turn into something that you get to play with.

Will you have any other new game announcements before launch?

We'll have to see. We have more announcements. I like to say game development is a journey. Things take time, so I want to make sure that when we announce things we really know what they are. I'll say we're signing things, and when we want to announce them is different.

Who you going to have make it Phil? Y'all didn't exactly pick a winning team for Crackdown 2. Maybe you shouldn't have sat on your thumb so damn long with the first one and green lit a follow up back when Realtime Worlds was still available early last generation.

Hmm that last quote doesn't seem too encouraging :-/. Gives the impression that they're not as far along on some unannounced titles as you would hope at this stage. Hopefully they'll have a strong gamescom but that comes across as a expectations check.

That would be soooo amazing.

It will also never happen. Equally probable titles we'll see:

Doom by Bungie.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver by Naughty Dog (Amy Hennig team).
Perfect Dark by Insomniac.
Metroid by Shinji Mikami (Vanquish style gameplay).
A real Final Fantasy by Yasumi Matsuno that isn't fucked up by SE.

I could go on. Dreams are nice but reality is a swift kick to the dick.

I loved Crackdown but isn't anything now just another studio trying to recapture that same magic? I always have distrust of franchises that are passed to another developer. Neversoft with Guitar Hero, Trearch with CoD, 343 with Halo, etc. if the original creative and development team isn't behind it anymore, it generally lacks the greatness of the originals.

Some exceptions exist like Obsidian's franchise continuing games, though they come with their own set of massive problems that require loads of patching to make the games great.

So based on Crackdown 2, I remain skeptical.

Yeah, I would be happy if that didn't exist.

Try; Perfect Dark by Starbreeze

Gimme my Crackdown 3 now!!!

Also, interesting that they are claiming that the ship wrecking scene of quantum break reveal was not only real time, but also playable... (This scene for those who don't remember).

Please GOD let Crackdown 3 be awesome.

I really need more than Forza 5 and the promise of Halo 5 to justify the 500+ I dropped on this console.

I for some reason want to see Rare do Crackdown 3. Just because with them being an internal studio they could really focus on using the Xbox One tech (and maybe the cloud) and it would showcase that Rare can still make core focused games.

This line got me thinking

I'll say we're signing things, and when we want to announce them is different.

Does this mean MS have no internal studios left with unannounced projects (if so what happened to the likes of Good Science and BigPark)? Didn't MS say they are investing $1bn in game development and showed a map with lots of dots on it? Did that map just show places where MS have offices (i.e. for business development, marketing, localization and QA) and did that map include 3rd party studios too?

Or does signing mean the same as green lighting internal projects?

Is Quantum Break an action game? It sounds like its an interactive movie.

And yea Crackdown is happening, but when and by whom is the question.

I was pretty bored by both demos. Had my fill of Crackdown from both. Wasn't there a way to extend the timer for both demos too? That probably did it.

I've never played one of these games, but they just sounded like open world collectathons with bad shooting mechanics and paper thin stories. What is so great about them?

Travelling across the city is kind of fun since you can just jump around like a super hero instead of having to use the shitty vehicles.

What? Crackdown 1 was amazing... Crackdown 2 not so much :-( but that puts it at 1-1...
Depending on who develops Crackdown 3 it could capture the magic of 1 again.

c2 was amazing for what it was: a "sequel" developed by a small team in less than 10 months, on a pretty small budget.

Probably should play them. The open world, super human powers are a big draw. You are the law as well, so that is cool. Shooting isn't bad at all, driving is cool but the only way to go is jumping and running around.

Play Crackdown 1.

Skip Crackdown 2.

You're a super-powered cop cracking down on organized crime throughout a corrupt city.
That's whats so great about it.

Quantum Break sounds cool, but really, this is something that couldn't have been done this generation? Let you play instead of showing a cutscene? Or am I missing something?

Nothing! I said nothing!
The Crackdown demo on its own would probably be in my top ten games of the generation.

Crackdown itself is probably second only to Fallout New Vegas.

Probably holding his tongue because its just called Crackdown, and its a reboot.

They definitely need to make the new game far less repetitive. Jump into compound and then shoot/nade/rocket the fuck out of everyone, rinse and repeat a dozen times. The number one improvement should be enemy AI, less cannon fodder more adaptable. Not just swarm the player when in range. More side missions too, and it would be sweet to have an agility level that let you basically jump half the city (or slightly more reasonable, but still faster and bigger is better). I just wonder if its still going to be about taking down bosses (never played #2).

No thanks. I thoroughly enjoyed JC2, but they suck at mission structure and their gameplay style is too floaty and unrefined for something like CD.

Ruffian or don't bother.

ruffian is busy with other stuff and avalanche has mad max and jc 3 in development. its going to be a new studio or they will just outsource it.

God no. Most of that sounds dreadful and has no place in any Crackdown game.

Just....no.
