ex-Valve veteran Tom Leonard is recruiting "top game development talent" for Amazon

No, but Android did surpass iOS in marketshare, yes? The benefit of an open ecosystem is that every part of it helps the whole. Gather enough of these platforms and suddenly you have a solid userbase that you can build on, even if no single one of these devices is a runaway success.

Also, point of note, the Amazon Appstore has a far bigger revenue than the Google Playstore.

I thought that from Nirolak post, the Amazon console wasn't supposed to compete with the PS4 and Xbone?

People who think gaming is its own special snowflake might believe that, but the truth is all entertainment competes with all other entertainment for customer dollars, because theres only so many hours in a day.

People think Amazon could crush Sony, Nintendo or MS in the console market? There aren't enough michealjordanlaughing.gifs in the world.

Directly compete.

It will be a competitor in the same way the Wii or handhelds competed with the 360/PS3.

Or, put another way, it won't have the same games, but still compete for time/attention.

If they HYPOTHETICALLY manage to build a machine stronger than PS4 for the same price or cheaper and get developers and publishers on board, what else besides brand loyalty would be on the way for Amazon to get a big chunk of the console market? They don't even need retailers to back them up on the most important markets.

MS proved a few generations ago that this is not an exclusive space. If you are willing to invest (a lot) it can be done.

And I don't think anyone mentioned that Amazon is going to crush anyone in this thread.

I could see them making a Steambox sort of device, but using their DD service instead of Valve's. My PC + Steam's Big Picture Mode is enough for me but competition never hurts.

Amazon console will almost definitely be digital only and always online. It may not even be sold at GameStop. I could see them pulling a Steam and going direct to the consumer. They already have the infrastructure to pull it off.

Seriously, this will a box for downloading stuff from amazon plus android games.

I think this is a general idea, although it does sound like they are trying to provide their own content as well.

The thing is, I have little interest in iOS and android games as a whole.

This easily beats ouya though, and it isn't even out.

I like the idea of Amazon getting into the console business. Amazon has shown that they understand hardware development and marketing better than most when they introduced the Kindle Fire. On top of that, they certainly have a strong subscription service in Amazon Prime.I could definitely see a digital only box that undercuts the big dogs by $100 to $150.
