Steam Versions Batman:AA/AC & Bioshock 2 Adding Achievements, Removing GFWL/Securom?

Rreeeaaallllyyy holding my breath for this news. I've been holding off playing either of the Batman games on PC after I installed AA on steam and saw they had just implemented achievements. Every time I visited the steam community to see if there was any update on them I would always see post after post of people having GFWL issues (I had enough of them to make me uninstall the game shortly after picking it up on steam). I've been lurking the discussions almost weekly for the last few months. Bioshock 2 steamchieves + dlc + native controller support is just icing on the cake.

Please let it be true!

The DLC is probably going to get lost, you will have to rebuy on Steam. As I understand it, GFWL doesn't assign keys to DLC, just assigns the DLC to your account.
So there is no feasible way of transferring that ownership.

It would be nice if Good Guy Gabe gave the DLC free to people who already owned the game before the changeover date, if it's something they can't keep track of.

It would be up to 2K, not Valve.

I guess my logic was along the lines of Valve taking a hit in this case, or requiring it of 2K, which in retrospect I suppose isn't likely. But it seems like they would do something to make up for the fact that they might not be able to track prior DLC purchases.

Does the DLC for GFWL games have product keys visible like the games? If they do then 2K could just make it so you register your key on Steam to get it there...

2K probably wants to recoup some of the investment removing GFWL.

No keys are assigned to DLC.

I hope I can download the Arkham City DLC that I bought on Steam through the Steam client after these updates go live. Also hope I can purchase Harley Quinns Revenge through Steam. Never bought it because I could never download my other DLCs...

If you bought it through Steam, you will still be able to download the DLC.

Not through the GFWL client, I always get the "There was an error retrieving your purchase history. Please sign out and try again later." error, that's my personal reason for hating it. It basically says "thanks for the cash, no content for you." I am glad GFWL is dying.

So you bought the DLC through the Steam client, not through the GFWL client?

Correct, that is why I am hoping after the update I can actually just download them through Steam & not the stupid GFWL client. As it stands right now even though I bought them through Steam I have to download them through GFWL & I can't because GFWL is so broken.

How likely is it that both batman games are patching this shit out and sticking with Steam only? I already own them but havent installed yet.

Arkham City DLC bought through Steam gives a GFWL code to redeem through GFWL.

This is one of the reasons companies with GFWL games don't sell the DLC on the Steam store. Minerva's Den, Batman games, and Fallout 3 all don't sell the DLC on the store, the latter two just have an ultimate version that has all of the DLC.

This is because there are so many conflicts with activating purchased DLC through the GFWL client. And, instead of relying on Microsoft to update the DRM accordingly, they just remove the individual DLC entirely.

The reason I asked where you purchased the DLC is, if you purchased through the Steam client, then it is tied to the registry app and you are fine. If you purchased through GFWL, you are out of luck.

Any day now...

Im holding to play any Halo games past 3 since im waiting for the Steam version of the game.

XD

Don't bother with any Halo game after 3 anyways. The fan base is hardly alive after the way Halo 4 was handled. It was a complete departure from the original games. They tried to recreate the COD experience and did so poorly. The gameplay and story of the singleplayer was lacking compared to previous titles and the multiplayer was a subpar version of COD that is struggling to sustain a small online population less than a year after launch.

If Halo 1-3 are released through steam with proper MP I will buy them as soon as they go on sale.

I guess I have controller support in Bioshock 2 to look forward to! All of this does has me worried about what will happen to other GFWL titles once the store is shut down.

Yep. Day 1.

That sucks but I might just pony up for the GOTY edition of Bats:AC if I wanted to play it again when it goes on sale. I actually took advantage of a pricing error on GFWL to get the challenge maps for free back when it just released (even though the base game I owned on Steam).

Both Batman AA and AC GOTY editions will get the updates. Both will get mac versions and achievements (AC has them already). Only AC has gotten the crucial no key displayed on launch and no key saved in the registry update, of course that would be fairly trivial to add to the AA entry.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have seen zero updates to the AA/AC non-GOTY apps. I don't know whether this means Warner Brothers are leaving those people out in the cold or not.

Yep. Day 1.

Same with me.

If it gets announced, I will volunteer to make the OT and I will be there day one.

Weirdly enough, there are currently two different versions of Arkham City GOTY Edition available on Steam: one that lists all the DLC, and one that doesn't (but presumably still includes it all).

I could have sworn that the DLC was no longer available separately, too, but now it's all back up for sale. Which is extra weird, because you can't actually buy a version of the game that doesn't already include all the DLC any more. It seems like all these old store pages have been put back up again, and that game and DLC bundle would have originally been all the DLC and the non-GOTY edition of the game, except the non-GOTY edition is no longer available so now it just links to the GOTY version.

Those are actually the same thing. One entry is just available to see the bundle of content that is available for the GOTY edition.

Go to the Batman: AC GOTY page, and click 'Package Info.'

DLC is not purchasable separately, only shows up because they are linked to the GOTY edition package.

DLC was purchasable separately until the GOTY version became available.

This is accurate. Don't know who you are replying to though.

I'm very excited for this, a good excuse to play through Arkham games again.

I hope other companies follow suit.

It will be my first time playing BioShock 2 and AC. I am actually very excited for BioShock 2 multiplayer mode, looks really interesting.

BS2's multiplayer is playable, I got to L30 on a rental and I don't play a lot of online shooters.

The single player is... well, I have a lot of issues with the writing, level design, plot, and characters. It's worth a playthrough and not terrible. I do think the combat is deeper and more enjoyable than BS1.

I will be picking up Minverva's Den day one though, that should be the singleplayer experience I am looking for.

If you play it, please turn off the golden waypoint arrow! It really hurts the game as you miss out on some of the more brilliant aspects of the level design featured in MD through the more non-linear progression.
Really though, you should turn it off in every BioShock game. >.>

I emailed WB to find out. Not expecting much.
Other than disappointment.

I could picture a scenario where they just move everyone to the GOTY edition instead of dealing with individual DLC updates.

I wish. All would be forgiven.

Seen 4 updates to Bioshock 2 within the last hour, we are in the final push.

Oh, so only those with the GOTY editions will likely see GFWL patched out? Doesn't concern me, then.

I really don't know, not seeing updates on those apps doesn't prove their either way.

That is in reference to Arkham Origins which has not been released yet. We knew of that one from the logos on the trailers, but its good to have it confirmed.

I could picture a scenario where they just move everyone to the GOTY edition instead of dealing with individual DLC updates. I'm sure now that the GOTY editions are available and are put on sale regularly, individual DLC sales are pretty insignificant at this point and maybe not worth the effort to port the DLC to steam individually.
