Tri Ace x Square Enix no longer homies?

Tri Ace havent made a game under Square Enix in quite a while (stealth troll Valkryie Profile 3 thread) &. Tri Ace's last big game Resonance of Fate was published by Sega i think?.

Did they have an internal falling out or something? they had that magic together man :(

Edit: just released they helped with FFXIII-2, didnt know that, i dont play the Final Fantasy games anymore anyways. Then again its an S-E ip still..

EDIT 2: All hope lost, Ducky with the Ether post #9:
tri-Ace is pretty much on their last legs. They've been taking any sort of work they can just to pay their employees but nothing makes money and no one wants to work with them anymore. After a few PSP games and a bomba 3DS for Konami, they even tried developing a social browser game which ran like crap, and the service was closed after a few months. Give up on the developer.

Yeah, they helped on XIII-2, so I don't think there's bad blood or anything. Do we know if they're at all involved with Lightning Returns?

Remember seeing a comment somewhere that implied they were involved but I don't remember what it was.

If they helped for XIII-2 and are helping for 3, then why haven't we heard about it ? Is Square desperate to make us believe that they still have talent in-house ?

Same reason why Tose works on a shitload of games but are barely ever acknowledged. Nobody cares.

I dont think it's a SE specific thing, no-one wants to give them money to make a big game because why would you?

Don't say this (even if it's true)
Still hopping for a Star Ocean V made by them

I really hope that this Studio won't close. Resonance of Fate and Valkyrie Profile 2 are some of my favorite RPGs.

Holy shit @ that bluntness.

RIP in peace Tri-Ace.

Because while their stories and characters are highly questionable, triace has created some of the best action rpg combat systems. It would be a shame if they go under.

SE won't green light a home console (Tri-ace specialty) JPG other than FF and KH maybe they would consider something but only internally.

Well, in all seriousness, what options does a studio like tri-Ace really have? They're a mid-sized developer with technology and skills which lean towards larger console projects rather than small portable stuff, and they specialize in making RPGs for the Japanese audience.

How many publishers can you think of who are even interested in producing console RPGs in Japan today? Not many? Well let's narrow it down even further. How many of those publishers don't have their own internal problems and are cutting back on production of large scale console projects? Now how many of those publishers left don't have their own production staff and are interested in funding a project by an outside developer? None? Yup, that's what I thought.

What can tri-Ace do? The industry has moved on.

I think people got a glimmer of hope when that tech demo surfaced and I'd surely love it, but..... I don't think we will see it unfortunately. I think jrpgs on consoles are pretty much dead too. Nobody wants to make them anymore....

EDIT: Friggen' Duckroll saying the same thing seconds before me, lol.

I was under the impression that Lightning Returns is a stealth VP3.

I've been staring blankly at your comment for a few seconds and I can make little sense to it. Both star a female character and are action RPGs, are there any more similarities beyond that?

SO2 is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, but based on what Tri-Ace has done post-PS1 era, if they died, I would not care as much as other RPG developers that have been kind of missing lately.

Could they scale themselves down to be more like, say, Gust? Other than that or working with a first party (and if that were going to happen it probably already would have) sounds like they're screwed.

It's a shame. Soon I'm going to look back and miss the golden age of gaming once everything is MMOs and phone games.

I've been hoping that either Sony or Nintendo put them on a decently sized project but I guess they aren't interested in saving the developers of Valkyrie fucking Profile.

They had a pretty good PS2 run. I liked SO3, Radiata Stories and VP2. Keep in mind that I don't play tri-ace games for the story, I'm there for the combat and the exploitable systems

Well, they have a fuckton more than Tri-Ace, that's for sure. Resonance of Fate & Beyond the Labyrinth are the only worthwhile games from them in recent years, whereas Square Enix has had plenty.

I miss this music in rpgs nowadays. It's from Valkyrie Profile.
There have been far better OSTs from Square Enix in recent years than that. >_> Though, not that VP2's OST is bad.

They'd fuck it up and turn it into some generic j-pop song with a terrible vocal nowadays.
You obviously haven't heard anything from them in years, what's with your silly generalization.

Maybe they can team up with Game Arts and remake Grandia 1, or ask Sega to let them remake Panzer Dragoon Saga, or...

:(

I would agree with 'pretty good', I liked those games too, but not to the extent of being super upset if they caved. I mean I feel a certain level of bad when any developer goes under, but I would not be super upset by modern Tri-Ace's fall.

SO4 was just terribad outside the battle system, it had some of the worst fucking characters and story. It's funny how Tales of had a very similar entry this generation with Tales of Graces. Considering Tales and Star Ocean started off essentially under one roof. Though Tales has redeemed themselves since then, Tri-Ace has not.

Can........maybe some big time publisher buy them outright a la Atlus?

But who would want them? I think that's the real issue here. I think Hexadrive has the same issues. They're also a technically proficient studio made up of many veterans from Capcom. Unlike tri-Ace, they specialize in 3D action games. But even then they have tons of problem getting original contracts. Their development titles are stuff like The 3rd Birthday and EX Troopers, while stuff they're more known for these days are doing super HD ports like Okami HD and the new ZoE2 HD patch.

I think it's rather unfortunate, but that seems to be the reality in Japan these days.

This reminds me how lucky I am Monolith Soft (my favorite RPG dev) were bought when they were. Aside from major franchises like Tales, Persona (presumably), KH, FF and SMxFE there seem to be no other home console JRPG's that will realistically come out in the future. They were in a similar tier to Tri-Ace and yet they seem to be the only company making a console JRPG from the smaller RPG developers and making a game not in a very popular series.

Seriously, tri-Ace's output has always been B-tier stuff. Their games are technically always top notch when it comes to features, but not really optimized.

In every post SFC game they made, SOMETHING in their in-game systems have been janky.

Look at Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4 and RoF. Something in them has always been lacking; either it's awful scenario writing or then the game system itself is flawed. There are always something -wrong- with their games, even though they are visually excellent.

tri-Ace would be an excellent tech studio for a bigger developer/publisher, like DICE.

They didn't do Eternal Sonata, that was Tri-crescendo. :p

Your point still stands though, and I agree. Though I think it turns out Eternal Sonata shares a similar problem even if not developed by them.

Star Ocean: The Second Story and Valkyrie Profile 1/2 are some of my favorite games of all time. This is really hard for me to read, damn. tri-Ace games were the first games where I pretty much attempted and eventually succeeded at getting into "endgame" content.

Oh shit, you're right, can't believe I forgot that. Crescendo was the offspring company with Sakuraba joining them.

Both Valkyrie Profiles can also be added to the flawed but beautiful gamelist.

That was Tri-Crescendo makers of the amazing Fragile Dreams and Co-developers of the also sublime Baten Kaitos series. Though they did originate from Tri-Ace.

Edit:
Beaten.
