Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Times have changed. Nowadays even kids (8yo+) tend to want and get mid-to-high-range smartphones and tablets. Not the cheap chinese knock-off for kids, no, the iProducts, Nexi and Galaxies!

True, as Apple and the ilk release them in goofy pink and neon green colors.

And, ironically, fanboys of other consumer electroncis don't take it as an AFFRONT to their design sensibilities, while gamers do.

I believe Nintendo already made a video game system line tailored for the mobile needs of 7 year olds. I think they called it the Gameboy and it's many versions.

If this thing sells better to the kids compared to the 3ds, it's because of marketing, not because of anything this thing offers that the 3ds does not.

:lol what. No thanks! Maybe if it was thinner it would work for kids (in line with the original Gameboy shape). This is just weird.

The 3DS XL is pretty much perfect for me, so I dunno if I would even get a proper 2DS version of it. The only thing I'd want is better speakers than the quiet 3DS XL.

I've been wanting to pick up a 3DS for myself rather than borrow my daughter's XL. I might get this. I was a little thrown off looking at it by itself, but the pictures of people holding it put me at ease. I think we'll be looking back at this thread after the holidays and eating some crow. This will sell very well.

Jeremy Parish thought it's actually more comfortable to hold

Despite 2DS's target market being kids, I do think the device has potential to appeal to more hardcore fans as well. It's much more comfortable to hold, for starters. Also, it's a much less expensive means to acquire a foreign system for access to software blocked off by region-locking, and I don't doubt that whenever the system finally shows up in Japan we'll see plenty of U.S. and European gamers importing one for themselves

I don't think it's ugly, more that it looks way too large for a portable. It will probably be more comfortable to hold than the clamshell though, since you grip the entire device instead of just half of it.

What's more interesting is that Nintendo is willing to cut the defining feature of 3DS to lower the price. Makes me wonder if they'll do the same thing for Wii U.

They really missed out here. No 3D means they could have done something like this:

I'd buy 4.

4 at midnight.

Hideous design.

A cheaper, non-3D version makes a lot of sense. But why not leave the design alone and just take out 3D.

I assume they're getting a lot of only/mostly played in 2D responses in those post play Club Nintendo surveys, so ditching 3D for a cheaper model makes perfect sense. I hate the 3D as it makes my eyes tired and it's too much of a hassle to keep the angle and viewing distance just right, so it's always turned off on my XL.

This is going to sell a shit ton. Looking forward to the haters being proven wrong. Going after the 7ish year olds is a stroke of genius. The userbase is going to grow faster and both Nintendo and existing 3DS owners will benefit in the long run.

Why would they bother giving it StreetPass? Who is going to carry that thing around? You can't throw it in a bag else the screens will get scratched up.

Ah, I get it. It's all about selling the accessories. Club Nintendo console pillowcases for this monstrosity.

So, in the last few years we've had:
- 3DS launches: "fuck, we've got a messaging problem with the general public. Some people are confusing it with the DS".
- WiiU launches: "As unexpected as this might sound, people are apparently confused about what WiiU is compared to Wii. Let's get that message out."
Which leads to "We're introducing a cheap 3DS revision, how should we name it?"

Amazing.

I'm seriously debating how to tell my wife we need two of these.

every time I would pull this out to play Animal Crossing or Ocarina, the fucking kid will freak out and want it.

I don't think it's so bad in design, not great but not bad either. I on the other hand think it looks rather comfortable. I have problems with the original 3DS, my hands cramp but this one seems to fix those problems. I don't get cramps from the XL either, so who knows.. At least going to try a 2DS and see how it feels.

This wouldn't be as laughable if they simply kept the folding design and changed it slightly to appear differentiated from the 3DS. But this weird shaped slab? Why? This isn't portable anymore! This is in tablet country, except that it's not a tablet!

I'd rather pay the extra $40 for a 3DS and turn the 3D off if I needed to. At least then I can fit it in my pocket.

For people saying it will fly off the shelves. Is it because of the price, because the design to me has to be one of the worst I've seen.

A normal 3DS at at a lower price without the 2D, now that will fly off the shelves.

The 2DS is gonna kill the 3DS off completely why buy the 3DS when the 2DS plays all the same games for 40 dollars cheaper. One thing is for sure though the 2DS at its current price is gonna sell like crazy.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. And mono? Really? I guess I can kind of understand the target market though. My 5 year old brother plays games on that crappy leap pad tablet thing.

That image of the adults playing is from the announcment video. To be fair, however, the focus of that video is very much centred on kids using the device. The device's suitability for adults is essentially considered a bonus; at least, that's how that video presents it.

It looks more like "sad Dad sees kids having fun" (Pic 2) and then when the kids leave to go play in the backyard "Sad Dad picks up the game to see what its all about, he has fun too!" (pic 3). Pic 4 is "Sad Dad's Partner sees 2ds lying around as he tidies the living room from the mess the kid's playdate caused"

the last 2 pics confuse me, is Sad Dad's Partner Bisexual? Is she Sad Dad's partner secret love affair? why do they switch positions and also switch 2DS's?

I do think nintendo could have destroyed everything if this was 99 bucks. It may seem like only a 30 dollar difference but its a lot bigger mentally

Apart from being one of the ugliest pieces of hardware I've seen, I just don't really understand the point of this.

Price reduction while maintaining the same profits

I'm so buying this, I was not willing to shell out money for a 3DS to play the new Pokemon but holy hell this totally answered all my woes.

It's still a weird device, no idea why, but they already got a purchase from me at that price!!

GBA/SP was mono but had stereo headphone solutions. Same thing with this.

It's $40 cheaper with near-feature-parity, not a deluxe model.
