Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Excuse this poor mock-up, I did it using my laptop's touch-pad.

I understand that some people think the current design looks a bit bland in the lower half, so I've moved some things about:

- Stereo speakers at top
- Start/Select moved down
- Second analogue stick added
- Palm grips in lower corners

The shoulder buttons are still an issue.
Good job, but it would prefer Wii U circle pad placement XD

It's more intuitive for new players since it's a symetrical layout.

Edit: Does Nintendo still plans to bring Mii Verse to the portable devices?

It seems to be a screenshot of upcoming firmware. Possibly Miiverse FW, but probably just a rearrangement of settings.

EDIT: The Wi-Fi switch comes on and off automatically depending on software according to Nintendo.

Interesting. Since you can't access the HOME menu while playing online that means you can't flick the Wifi switch to disconnect from a game. You can still just turn the power off though.

So now there's gonna be two different firmware versions for both the 3DS' and the 2DS.

Great, thanks! :)

Had that same color when I used to own a JP 3DS. Nothing beats all black though.

I like black, but the white screams quality and I love the translucent clear plastics on the top of the shell.

What was the need for a physical switch anyway?

To turn it on and off on the fly with no hassle whatsoever even in game play.

Yeah, gonna be impossible to disconnect intentionally without having to turn off your system.

I've never needed to do something like this. I've always considered it pointless, so I chalk this move as a win for the 2DS.

All because you don't use it doesn't render it losing compared to the 2DS.

I use it when the game i'm playing doesn't use it, flick, saves a lot of battery, flick when I need it again.

I'm the furthest thing from a Nintendo shill and I totally dig it. If it had bigger screens and a better battery, I'd happily swap my XL.

I like it as well.

Toss another analog stick on it and make the thing a tad more ergonomic and you've got a new Nintendo handheld that I'd love to own. A mini gaming tablet.

I used WW U because of it's extra screen. That way aspect ratio wouldn't be completely borken.

This is my white 3DS. Nothing beats it.

You've inadvertently toyed with my emotions, SuperSah. I was scrolling down and I just saw the アイスホワイト text and foolishly assumed for a moment that somehow the 2DS was announced for Japan. Seriously, if it was, I'd buy one day one. I really want to play some Japanese 3DS games and a JP 2DS would probably be cheap enough to get me to bite.

I feel like the triggers on the 2DS shouldn't be up at the top like that. It looks like it would be painful to reach the L trigger when using the D-Pad. It should be like the ZL and ZR triggers on the Wii U GamePad.

Of course if they did it like that the system would be even more awkwardly-shaped and bulkier.

I do think the next Nintendo handheld won't use 3D, but I'll doubt they'll nix the two screens. I'm sure they want to keep 3DS BC, specially if they're planning for the eShop to carry over.

You'd think that since the 2DS is aimed more towards children that they would have it available in a wider variety of colours. Instead there are even less available colours than the 3DS XL.
It's also aimed at shaving every single penny posible out of manufacturing. Making more colors available increases cost, plus it makes more sense to introduce new ones when sales start to skowdown.

Nice job, specially removing the inter screen space. Which became even more perplexing to me after someone pointed out that the device is infact using one screen. Nailed more of the changes i would make to the device. And a second analogue is always useful!

Would have been a nice strategy for them to start including the 2nd analogue in the cheapest incarnation, leading to yet another inclusion in a redesigned 3DS.

The next handheld is the Wii U. Off screen is designed for portability and because the investment in the tech serves a purpose.

TheCongressman is the guy to thank for the basic design.

This is my ideal next gen Nintendo handheld. That vertical screen will make certain 3rd person titles tricky if they try to use all of the screen space available for rendering their title though.

Well, it's not like it's pocketable anyway

This is exactly what they need to do with their next portable console. 1 tall screen that can be used as the developer wishes or can be split to be used as a DS/3DS.

On another note I purchased the black 3DS XL last week to play some DS and 3DS games when traveling but will probably not get much use. If the 2DS was available in black I would've gone for that instead, the 3D is of no use at all and I could've saved a few bucks.

okay, i think the biggest problem with the design of this system is the color scheme. because god damn, the color on front/black on back or the white front/color on back look fucking great.

You don't get it, the part around the screen has to be black because any other color around the top screen will mess with your eyes and detract from the 3..... oh.

Tempy

don't ask me for codes
I'm glad the front is matte instead of glossy, though I often wonder if it's the matte-ness which gives people the "kiddy"-impression.

I love how in just a day I went from "WTF is that thing?" to "Hmm, it's actually not that bad." And those mockups show that it can be refined even further. I guess it's a case of being shocked at a completely new design that hasn't been seen before (a WEDGE?) and needing some time to get used to it (maybe like that Apple trash can...well, I'm still unconvinced about that trash can. But I guess Nintendo and Apple are willing to sacrifice sexiness for functionality (The cooling system of the Mac Pro) and comfort (the wedge shape of the 2DS.))

This is beautiful. Tablet + Buttons + Nintendo sounds very nice.

I'd like a set of shelf-triggers that would be more comfortable when using the D-pad. The system is thicker on top so it may be reasonable to work them in without making the system larger too. The idea that two triggers will always be out of reach may anger some though; flashbacks to the
fantastic, wonderful, comfortable
N64 controller.

The more I look at various galleries and read impressions, the more I'm liking the system. For now, the only thing that I don't like is that the battery life, was hoping it has improved without the 3D but oh well. I'm also reading that it feels like a Gameboy Advance, add also the improved Start & Select buttons. Non-retractable stylus is welcome also. The mono audio might be a problem, but thats what earphones are for.

This is not at all a bad idea, the naming might (will) bite them in the ass initially as it will confuse the shit out of regular consumers. But a $130 2DS with the large line-up of great quality, family friendly titles is going to sell like gangbusters this holiday.

As weird as it looks, I honestly think that it will be fantastic to hold and game on for older people too. There's a lot of room there for your hands to stretch out in comparison to a folding 3DS/XL.

At this price I'll probably get one to check out a few interesting Nintendo titles (and SSB whenever that comes out).

I think Nintendo's going to have a lot of trouble moving Wii U's when you can get a lot of comparable titles on a much cheaper and portable 3DS/2DS. Someone like me for example would traditionally buy a Nintendo home console for a SSB title, it's the one series that they make that still holds a lot of sway with me. However this time I can get it for the much cheaper 3DS, it will have all the same features and online play. A lot of the big Wii U games have similar 3DS games.

2DS is probably one of the smartest things Nintendo's done in a long time. Most of you guys are out of touch with what the wider market will want. Doesn't matter if this thing is ugly, it's cheap, it's robust, it plays all DS and 3DS games. Parents will buy these in droves to give to their little hellions to keep them off their iPhones.

That would be an improvement and that's not what nintendo is looking to do with the 2DS, its a kiddy downgrade.

Nintendo of America HATES giving it's customers a wide variety of color choices and multiple SKUs. HATES IT I tell you.

Japan on the other hand...
