I just realized something! There are some DS and 3DS games that require you to close the screens in order to discover a secret or solve a puzzle. How is this going to be addressed? In those cases, were these systems simply going to sleep mode? If that is the case, then I guess it shouldn't be a problem since you can still set the 2DS to go to sleep from the main menu.

There's a sleep mode switch. My guess it will be tied to the closing the screen action.

Not anywhere near as intuitive but workable.

It will certainly confuse kids when their games ask for them to "close their DS". Actually, playing those games where you hold the DS sideways like a book would probably be really awkward on this thing unless you have giant hands or set it on a table.

I just had an X-Men "Reset the computer" flashback when you said that.

I can imagine a kid saying "IT ISN'T POSSIBLE!!!" before rage quitting.

Probably not much more awkward than holding, say, a Kindle...depending on which side you grasp (assuming you grasp one instead of letting it rest on your open hand) and what you're playing.

I agree, though, that closing the DS for certain select games might prove tricky. I'm sure the Internet Browser feature on the 2DS will help them out with that just fine.

You'd think that since the 2DS is aimed more towards children that they would have it available in a wider variety of colours. Instead there are even less available colours than the 3DS XL.

Reggie has actually remarked on that:

It really comes down to the nuts and bolts of how we manage our SKUs at retail, and how we do it in a way that’s effective for us and effective for our business partners. You’ve visited retail in Japan. One of the key differences in Japan is that the hardware is that it’s behind the counter. It’s not out and about. So in that type of construct, you can have a lot of inventory behind the counter. It’s a lot easier to support multiple colors. In our [North American] market, it’s all out there on the shelf. When you visit our retail, if I had to try to have 25 different SKUs out there, Wal-Mart would kill me. So what that means is that we have to be more selective and more knowledgeable in how we handle different SKUs.

I recall people actually talking about a puzzle in Hotel Dusk/Trace Memory/one of those games where you actually have to slightly close the DS to see a reflection on the screens. So that would literally be impossible to do on the 2DS without looking up the answer.

Seriously considering one of these. All I want it for is Pokemon X/Y, I wouldn't be using it in a portable manner. It's $160NZD as opposed to $300 NZD for the XL here. Any reason why I wouldn't want to?

I went from completely hating the look of the device to really liking it. Unfortunately as a launch-day buyer of the 3DS and 3DS XL I can't justify buying the device for a third time :-(.

At this rate though I think is safe to say that we will be seeing a new revision launching next year. And hopefully it will be an upgraded version of this design. Hopefully.

This is not at all a bad idea, he naming might (will) bite them in the ass initially as it will confuse the shit out of regular consumers. But a $130 2DS with the large line-up of great quality, family friendly titles is going to sell like gangbusters this holiday.

As weird as it looks, I honestly think that it will be fantastic to hold and game on for older people too. There's a lot of room there for your hands to stretch out in comparison to a folding 3DS/XL.

At this price I'll probably get one to check out a few interesting Nintendo titles (and SSB whenever that comes out).

I think Nintendo's going to have a lot of trouble moving Wii U's when you can get a lot of comparable titles on a much cheaper and portable 3DS/2DS. Someone like me for example would traditionally buy a Nintendo home console for a SSB title, it's the one series that they make that still holds a lot of sway with me. However this time I can get it for the much cheaper 3DS, it will have all the same features and online play. A lot of the big Wii U games have similar 3DS games.

2DS is probably one of the smartest things Nintendo's done in a long time. Most of you guys are out of touch with what the wider market will want. Doesn't matter if this thing is ugly, it's cheap, it's robust, it plays all DS and 3DS games. Parents will buy these in droves to give to their little hellions to keep them off their iPhones.

Hmm you might be on to something there. Now that Nintendo's games are a mix of 3D and 2D regardless of platform why buy both? Unlike the GB v the N64, the GBA v the GCN and the DS v the Wii, the experiences are fundamentally not that different, especially when the GamePad is taken into account.

I can't believe this is a real thing. Really looks like some gaming device from the 90s.

Also why would you want to flatten the entire thing when it has two screens? The single screen concepts above look nicer, but the overall design of the current version seems like a step back a decade.

I would buy that, the announced 2DS no thanks.

I want that design, but in a new handheld with much greater capabilities...

As it is I like the 2DS design because of it's 3DS innards. And cheaper!

For someone that didn't care much at all for 3D this is a dream come true. I won't have to pay for something I'd likely never really use!

Yeah, a lot more overlap/similarities between their portables and consoles this gen. It's going to hurt their Wii U sales IMO.

Now I want one. I like the form factor and the fact that screens are as crisp as they were on the OG model. XL's screens look horrible.

I've noticed this in other electronics too. My brother has an Asus netbook that looks very similar to the 3DS XL aesthetically (complete with red, brushed metal finish for the back of the screen). It also has a tapered bottom, just like this new 2DS. There are phones that have a "pudgy" appearance, like the WiiU's gamepad, sacrificing the sexy "straight lines and sharp angles" look in order to provide more comfort when holding. There are glossy framed, rounded-edged LCD TVs too. My PC's Coolermaster case looks like a 70's Star wars space age prop too! I personally like the "straight lines and sharp angles" but it seems that there are lots of modern electronics ditching that for a more "gadgety" appearance.

How the hell... what a difference coloring the front makes

holy shit I probably wouldn't mind buying one if it looked like that now :lol

but then again I like 3D and don't want mono speakers and the lack of clam shell for a 2 screen system is still a deal breaker for me... maybe I would buy it for collecting sake haha

but still dude, that looks a lot better! great job!

It's times like this I wonder if larger companies should consider getting involved in online communities and crowd sourcing designs before going to market.

Why you want to play games at that aspect ratio?

Edit: I do wish the screen was connected like that though. That Wind Waker mock up last page would be great.

What's not to like?
Oh I'm just making jokes that only I'll really get. See some of those acid references would be funnier if you had Johnny Depps voice as Hunter S. Thompson ringing in your mind like I do.

I've always actually liked the design but I will admit some 3rd person stuff might find itself limited because of the width of the screen.

When I first heard of this I was like: WHAT THE HEEEECK

Then I realized that in a marketing manner it's genius. Some people don't like the 3D in the Nintendo 3DS handheld, by taking that off from this new console, it has a cost-saving, and by making it cheaper it will be available for even more people. Nintendo just simplified things that some might not like from the Nintendo 3DS and then put a cheaper price and voilà more sales and a punch in the face to the PS Vita new lower price.

Oh, I know you're joking around. It was just rhetorical.

Yeah, not everything would work great using the entire screen, but that's fine I think.

This is sexy as hell

It looks like one of those controllers that you can put a iphone into to play games.

I still to do not see the point in the 2DS, Nintendo have said that 3D games are for people age 7+ it has this on the game box & also on a page on the download screen, using 3D is for age 7+ is also on the 3DS box that the console came in.

If you leave a age rated game laying about when there are children under the rating then you are legally responsible, thats a fact here in the UK it is a criminal offence now, it makes no difference that a child age 10 plays call of duty (for example) which is rated 18 but would the parent be ok with the child watching a hardcore porn dvd rated 18/R18 no, but both ratings mean exactly the same thing, everyone is wanting censorship of the internet to stop children watching porn which is rated 18 but they have no problem with them playing 18 rated games, both are explicitly the parents responsibility you cannot argue against this, it is the way it is its as simple as that, the gun issue is slightly different because is there a age restriction on owning a gun or using one, because there are many reports & videos where parents are teaching their children to use guns who are aged about 6 from some videos i have seen.

This whole argument that the 2DS is not aimed at the current 3DS market is completely missing the point people are trying to make, the whole 3DS has been redesigned to play only 2D games when the 3DS has that exact same function if you use the settings correctly, if you really want to make sure fix the slider so it cannot be moved to the 3D postion, it must of cost Nintendo a fortune in time & money in R&D when they should be spending this time/money on the failing WiiU, i have both a original 3DS (which has always had the 3D on max) & a WiiU & i am incandescent that Nintendo has wasted time on this 2DS when all of their resources should be focused on the WiiU, the 2DS has left me with no other option other than leaving me with the feeling that i am finished with Nintendo, a sad day.

...hate me...
Since it isn't a clamshell design, they could have stuck a proper analogue stick on there. Instead of that crappy "nub".
The nub is far from crappy. It's fantastic. After trying it, I wouldn't even mind the Wii U had come with those instead, like the original design had. Real talk.

You know, that huge screen looks great, but a vertical ratio would be crap for a Mario or Zelda game.

And that's why I kinda fear a single display design. Most devs would be tempted to drop the half display gameplay design (with the other half being menu/maps/etc) they currently have on DS/3DS games, trading a proper aspect ratio for more real estate.

NOW... if Nintendo can come up with that design, but have it somehow rotate and thus getting proper controls to play in widescreen... so you would have the following options:
Widescreen (normal games without big map requirements etc)
Vertical fullscreen (for shmups and whatnot)
Vertical halfscreen (DS/3DS style and backward compatibility)

Then ho lee fuk.

And if they push really really... REALLY hard to have foldable screen technology in order to keep a clamshell design. Mother of god.

I was thinking that a 3:2 aspect ratio tablet-like device with a very, very sophisticated physical controls shell would be literally godlike. 2:3 for vertical gaming like the mock-ups above gives me the chills, and the vertical single screen would work splendid for DS/3DS emulation and classic vertical gaming genres like shmups. And then, on horizontal mode, you have a fairly wide screen for more traditional experiences. And let's not forget mobile-based games that would be perfectly possible with this setup when the shell is removed.

I think this is the one optimal way for Nintendo to enter the modern mobile arena while at the same time introducing a hardware that allows both unique, new gameplay styles (like vertical gaming), but also perfectly traditional experiences.
