Xbox One seemingly won't support external storage at launch.

From the latest Major Nelson podcast, around 37 minutes in.

Major Nelson said:
The Xbox One will ship with a 500GB hard drive, all of them have that. The future plan is definitely to support external storage, much like we do on the Xbox 360.

My understanding is that feature won't be there at launch because the team's working on other things. It's definitely on the list, but I don't know when it'll come in though.

I'm assuming external storage for game installation.

It MUST support it for other storage purposes (music, video, pictures etc)..otherwise...yes that is wierd.

Eh, I'll be too busy enjoying Dead Rising 3 and capturing gameplay with the HD PVR 2. External storage can happen when it happens.

im guessing he means it wont work for game installs but you could still plug in a hard drive filled with your favorite mountain dew and doritos commercials no problem.

Definitely a worry about security. If the team is so uncertain about their own creation, WTF have they been doing for the last 12 months? Choosing tile border colors?

Troubles away, Xbox clouds save.

Cloud saves would be an option and another revenue stream....can you imagine how much storage you will need, there will be teared storage charges per so much gig.

The sales pitch will be "take your collection anywhere"

Why do I have the feeling I'll be reading about how it'll only play games in 3 countries if they speak one of the 5 languages that kinnect will work with in the 13 countries it's launching in sometime next week...

Of course it won't.

Nothing seems ready with this console.
I am willing to assemble the console box and controller if they provide the screws and if it means the machine will still be released this year.
Really? :/

That doesn't make any sense. Isn't it just a standard HDD, same as on PS3/PS4 this time?
I believe the Xbox One HDD is hard-wired to he main board. In order to replace it - even if it were allowed - you would need to dismantle the console completely.

That is, unless they have done another 180 and now the HDD is replaceable on the go.

This is getting to be a bit ridiculous now.

why? presumably they are taking the route of '500GB should be enough until we get the update needed ready' and push it out at a later date.

I'd assume this is sitting on a very boring project timetable as 'not launch sensitive' and got pushed on date due to that.

Should have enough space for 15 games so im fine for at least 2 years qua space. And it has background installing like blizzard games have or at least i hope. So deleting and reinstalling an game shouldn't be such an hassle

Saves aren't what take up lots of space. It's games. You can always re-download your digitally purchased games for free. And if it's a disc-based game, you can just re-install it from the disc if you need the extra space.

Besides, they already offer cloud storage of saves at no extra charge with XBL Gold.

It's not like we're going to fill up 500gb at launch.

And not even afterwards, unless you go digital-only. And even then, you just delete unused games.

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
When I get an XB1, I have a 4TB bad boy just waiting to penetrate his USB port <3

Isn't the whole point of digital to be able to play any game on a whim easily without changing discs?

Either way both parties need to fix this if they plan on pushing digital.
