Warhammer 40,000 |OT| In the Grim Darkness of the Community Forum There Is Only War

Wasted an hour at wirk reading the id4 40k stuff.

It has enlightened me to Matt Ward's fuck ups!

/tg/ has a hard-on for Ward hate. It's quite funny because a lot of the things they hate about him... don't even originate from him.

The Sanguinor, golden nipples Blood Angels, the Dread "baby carriage" Knight, etc. are all created by the sculptors and then handed off to the designers.

He wrote some stupid things in C: Blood Angels (Necron-BA best friends 4 ever) and Draigo from C: Grey Knights is idiotic. But the new Necrons are wonderful, and he wrote the fluff for the recent Sisters of Battle mini-codex, which is pretty good. Doesn't stop /tg/ from condemning every bit that he's written though.

And his books age pretty well and offer a pretty damn good wealth of army-building choices. Better than Phil Kelly (Longfang Longfang Longfang, Heldrake Heldrake Heldrake, Wave Serpent Wave Serpent Wave Serpent) that is bizarrely adored.

So basically, out of the three writers, Ward is the one who tends to make things fun.

Mentioned it in the other thread, but hasn't the revelation that the Eldar were created by the Old Ones to fight the Necrons and C'Tan slightly buggered up the timeline when it comes to the chaos gods?

Previously, the 3 elder gods were all assumed to have been created by other races before the Eldar ruled the galaxy - something must have created them. They definitely werent active when the Old Ones were. Now there's no appropriate time gap between the old ones and the fall of the Eldar Empire. Basically where did Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeenthc come from? It took the death of a galaxy wide empire to make Slaanesh but there's nothing equivalent for them.

there's a new nid codex ? whattt
Not yet, probably this year.

The old, old fluff says that the first three Chaos gods were birthed due to humans. This of course is just bad fluff and is no longer applicable.

GW doesn't get too specific about the timing of their births. Supposedly when the Old Ones created races attuned to the warp to help fight the C'tan (Eldar, Orks, several others), this was what allowed them to go from non-distinct warp energies into distinct intelligences that could get a foothold in the material universe. This happens some time before the birth of the Emperor, who was born in human pre-history.

The warp and all the bad emotions in it were always there, and there were always warp-compatible species feeding it, but the sentience and will came later.

You're telling me Genghis Khan being baby daddy to Khorne is bad fluff????????????

Whew. Jesus, you scared me there for a sec.

It is intriguing though.

If that was the conclusion of a trilogy of Space Marine games... what a gut punch.

Too bad the series is KIA. :(

Not that I know of, I was just spit balling.

That's it. I've gotta put you on ignore. You're like that doctor in Arrested Development or Archer.

"Doctor, how is he?"
"It doesn't look good I'm afraid."
"What? OMG!"
"Yeah, the new drapes they put into the rooms look awful."
"Wha... 0.o"

:p

hey cool friends I want to get in on some hot space action; is it worth going back to Dawn of War mit expansions, or straight to Dawn of War II? Money is no object ('cuz they're all cheeaaap)

Wait, SM was suppose to be the first a trilogy?
Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior was presented as the first in a series of games focusing on different warriors of the 40k universe. Years later, we get Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine...

It isn't the first in a trilogy, it is a sequel. WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW

Depends, if you like base building in your strategy games and don't mind copious amounts of cheese and ham (METAL BAWKSES) they're pretty good. DoW2 is mostly small squad tactics with less cheese.

Been re-reading some Horus Heresy because I forgot where I was.

I had a thought on my way to work (where I am now :[ ) that it would be delicious if it was true that the Emperor was actually trying to become a God from the onset.

Hopefully all the rumors about Nidvember pan out.

Indeed. It needs rebalancing so that you're not insane if you don't pick a Tervagon, and not insane if you do pick a Carnifex.

I had a thought on my way to work (where I am now :[ ) that it would be delicious if it was true that the Emperor was actually trying to become a God from the onset.

Well, he probably sort of was. The old fluff is that the Emperor is a reincarnation of the combined spirits of every (or nearly every) shaman, psychic etc on Earth who all simultaneously took their own lives in order to create him. And that his goal is to usher humanity into it's age as fully psychic race, at which point it will, much like the Eldar, give birth to a new god. But the idea is to try and get this Nu-men god to be broadly on humanity's side, rather than it's apex predator.

Of course, part of the lore from the Inquisitor game was that there was a lot of disagreement about how exactly that would pan out...

It just seems a little stupid that he never went out of his way to define the differences between true God-hood and pseudo-Godhood. In which just having a presence in the warp is what makes you a "God".

It would have cleared up so much. The Emperor was a bit of a stubborn ass. The only part I dislike about him is his extreme xenophobia and lack of trust in fellow humans. If they got along with the Eldar shit would have been so much easier....

Is my really deep hate for zerg players interchangeable with tyranid player hatred? Blizzard seemed to have ripped that race right off after all.

Maybe? What it is you hate about the zerg?

Tyranids are superficially similar, but I like their execution far better. More of that stems from not having the idiotic Kerrigan as a leader, but an actual proper alien consciousness directing the entire swarm.

I always loved the designs of this series and the universe has a nice metal feel to it.
I only read one of the books, Helsreach, and although the book seems to read like fan fiction, my favourite character isn't even a space marine but a stormtrooper of the Steel Legion, Andrej. He has a geat comic side and at the end
I feel sorry for him.

Still have to play the games that I bought during a promo.

They wholesale ripped the entire thing off. Started with Warhammer to Warcraft (Vanilla Ice was part of the original marketing team for Blizzard) and then they stopped beating around the bush with 40k and straight ripped off the entire look of the Eldar, Tyranids and Space Marines.

It's as blatant a ripoff as I've ever seen. The people who play the actual figure game are always pissed about it

I'm surprised Blizzard did not get sued to kingdom for that.

Well, the world wasn't as lawsuit happy back then, and once you look a bit deeper they're not really similar outside of the art. The marines are space rednecks instead of space faith militant with centuries of service, the bugs want to evolve to perfection instead of omnomning everything (well, wanted to but SC2 retconned that) and the space elves for one don't look like elves and were fairly good guys if tremendously arrogant and did not orgy a chaos god to existence.

Dude, it's a xerox copy. They barely even tried to hide it. Some minor characteristic differences don't really amount to much. Starcraft is like Transmorpers, but popular and also pretty good quality.

And the 90s were all about lawsuits. It's more like Blizzard was a giant at the time and GW was barely solvent.

...meh WH 40k im sure they played in the offices at blizzard.... But warhammer is so much more than SC who cares, so much more filled out. The terrans just dont compare to the imperium and the zerg is ...come on just like the tyranids based off of aliens so who cares.

The differences are more than enough though to prevent any type of lawsuit. GW doesn't own these concepts and a lot of them they took from classic material as well, but it's all open game. It's how countless companies make 40k rip off models and games, as long as they change some of the cosmetics, don't use any of the same names or iconography, they are ok.

Chapterhouse got in trouble with GW because they were making models with actual GW used icons on their models as well as using 40k names to sell products on their website. But make similar looking space marine and call it space roman or whatever, and it's ok.

40K podcast recommendations, anyone? Tried 40K Radio yesterday but a lot of it seemed like ads and unfocused chat. I'm looking for a podcast with a bit of new releases chat, tactics and hobby stuff, one that's relatively kid-friendly too if possible!

Do people really think GW invented the idea of Space Marines, a parasitic hive-minded Tyranid/Zerg/Flood-type race, and a super old, religious psychic race?

Those are pretty standard sci-fi tropes. And when you dig into the details of Space Marines vs Terrans, Tyranids vs Zerg, and Eldar vs Protoss, they aren't that similar beyond design elements.

My experience is that you're going to get those things from different shows:

The 11th Company - tournament-level tactics talk

The Independent Characters - focuses deeply on one subject per show, usually hobby related or something unusual like Zone Mortalis or Necromunda.

Deep Strike Radio - 100% fluff talk

I have to agree with this post, and the fact that the Gothic theocracy human future... The iconic trait of the 40k universe ... Is just not present in StarCraft at all.

The space marine and alien bugs with caste system trope began pretty much with Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers.

Blizzard most likely did copy a lot of stuff from Warhammer.

Blizzard does copy a lot, but let us not kid ourselves, tyranids and the zergs direct source is Aliens. I think Blizzard copied from a lot more sources than just warhammer.

Minor is really downplaying it. Look, I'm not trying to defend Blizz here, but the lore/fluff is completely different for them.

Independent Characters is absolutely the best for that kind of stuff. They do great indepth review episodes on new stuff (Forge World too, since one of the hosts is a maniac and buys everything). It's the only 40K podcast I still listen to. They're pretty much clean too (unless someone they're interviewing gets salty) so if that's a worry, they're good for that.

Heroic 28s do nothing but reviews of codexes but you have to put up with one of the hosts breathing into his mic constantly and for me, it's a deal breaker if a podcast has terrible audio issues.

What is the link between the Genestealers from the original Space Hulk board game and the Tyranids? I have the board game that was rereleasde a few years ago and the 1994 3DO game and it seems that the art changed over the year.

The Genestealers are a type of Tyranid. They infiltrate and fuck shit up, thus you find them on Space Hulks.

The picture you linked is a converted model of a Swarmlord made from a Carnifex, Trygon, and green stuff.

Genestealers are the Tyranids infiltrators
Ohhh I see! I remember reading a bit about them back in the days and they sounded far more scarier than the typical tyranids.

Essential they could infect living humans and take over their mind, and could plant eggs into the wounds of enemies and whatever would hatch out of those eggs would be an hybrids of genestealers and their species, kinda like the xenomorph from Aliens. They were also not 'dumb' creatures that would zerg the ennemies or launch suicide attacks.

Pretty neat!

And then you have Genestealer Cults...

Such a cult forms if a Genestealer infects members of another species with its genotype. The resultant changes in the genome of the host cause a fanatical loyalty to the Genestealers as well as a drastic change to their reproductive system; their firstborn children will be Hybrids, a grotesque mixture of the host's race and Genestealers. These hybrids infect further victims, and the infection spreads exponentially. Fourth generation hybrids produce Purestrain Genestealers, and the cycle starts once again.
