150Mhz CPU boost on XBO, now in production

For someone not as knowledgeable:

A) Is this normal so close to release?

B) Would this increase risk of physical system failure?

Microsoft made some last minute tweaks with the 360 back then as well. We shouldnt worry about system failures like RROD anymore, console has a gigantic fan to keep it cool.

Do we know for certain what the PS4 clock speed is yet? I've heard 1.6, 2.0, and 2.75... but nothing actually concrete yet.

The ball is now on Sony's court. Killzone SF demo showed it was 1.6GHz, they better update it a little bit, as CPU's more likely to be a bottleneck for them.

Isn't this thing supposed to be released in two months? Seems really strange that they're still messing around with the specs.

Well they are using the same chip, and Jaguar can go up to 2.0 GHz I believe. Perhaps they bumped it up after determining thermals were good enough.

In the presentation, Yusuf made it sound like they are shipping millions... Said "multiple million enjoying Xbox this holiday season"

Cool. I thought maybe this would happen after the GPU boost in order to keep them in synch with each other when using GPGPU features.

Sony still needs to disclose CPU numbers. I'm waiting.

The Major said it was, yes.

It shouldn't. Performance testing for the past who knows how many months has probably had them bouncing way up above this and back down and they settled on a clock speed that probably barely affected heat and sound at all(Albert said its all about max speed at a certain maintainable fan speed/sound level). So if the cooling can keep 100% CPU usage at 45 degrees at two different speeds, why would you not choose the faster speed?

Great, thanks.

Finally good news for the MS console. What bad news will now leak out to take this away?

You have to have a Gold membership to take advantage of all those hertz.

For what? It already has more power / the stronger hardware and better memory.
And the stronger GPU will take a lot of task away from the CPU in the future.

Nothing wrong with more speed.

Given it's basically the same CPU why not boost it?

I wonder if this will translate into a measurable performance boost for most games. But hey, if it can be done without upping the rate of system failure, why not?

so CPU is definitively faster on Xbox compared to PS4? Which means physics and next-gen AI and da gameplay are better on the One? And PS4 is only for people who want da graphics and not gameplay?????

also, the above comment is not a serious post, hence my usage of "da". Dear lord, please don't reply to me seriously!

Awesome.

0.0005 Tflop boost! - Win!

he expects multiple millions of people enjoying xbox one through the holidays. Largest launch for them ever (just started mass production)

so either they plan to have >1m units for launch, or they're playing with stats and counting multiple people per console (eg in a family)

Well he said in terms of units

360 launched with 750k with shit yields... Production for that started September 14, 2005

So it's a downgrade from 1.9 right? Guys who believed the 1.9 rumor, right?

Oh you!

Lol, that would be amazing.

"Over 10 million people will enjoy the Xbox One this holiday season!" *sets up kiosks in the middle of Times Square*

memory clock speed bump too? or are they all decoupled from one another?

AFAIK it is not possible to bump memory speed.

This is a SOFTWARE tuning, they are flashing the hardware with a higher clock setting because they are confident the CPU won't fail.

Obviously, there is some risk if a chip is designed for a specific frequency and you tune it higher afterwards. It may break - but if they do that to all devices, I think they are confident enough... or they risk a fiasco.

Why would ms do that if they have the cloud to do the work?

The bump is not much but I guess helps here and there

No reason to "mess" with the specs.

Sounds hot
see wut i did there

The massive heatsink they showed off on the E3 demo units should easily allow for a small clock speed bump like this. The fact that they designed the XBO to be oriented only horizontally should allow them to maximize the cooling for that orientation, so I don't see heat being an issue this time around.

Weird. Why are they still overclocking the CPU? At this point in time, they should be mass producing.

Good news I guess?

Console should be in mass production at this stage surely, yet they "just" added this?

Last minute hardware tinkering doesn't sound like a great idea, especially with Microsoft's track record with launch hardware.

Was wondering if this was coming or not. Seeing how big the heatsink is, I figured they would look into trying to up the clock. However, I wonder how long this has been in the books for. If they want to keep their release day close to Sony's, it doesn't bode well if they're still making changes this late... so hopefully this has been kept under wraps for awhile.

CPU's and GPU's are different, you cant just throw anything at a GPU. This is def a good thing for Xbox One, nicely done Microsoft.
