Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) manga thread of TOTAL SPOILER PANDEMONIUM

I think the only way we'll get to know anything is for Eren to actually get successfully kidnapped.

Also:
- Reiner = Bowser
- Mikasa = Mario
- Eren = Peach

Yup, pretty much.

Eren has had a total of 2 very useful moments in the entire manga thus far, and even then, one of the times it took Armin to actually get him to do anything useful.

The rest of the time he's either out of it, screaming his head off, or being saved by Mikasa. I really hope we get a good character arch and see him actually become a bit more competent and finally grow up a bit.

Angry idiot hero is a Shonen trope.

As dumb and frustrating as Eren is, I kinda appreciate that most figures of note (and competence) are female in this series. Misaka and Eren's relationship is like reverse damsel-in-distress.

I appreciate that too, especially in an unapologetically shounen manga.

They also don't say a single word about there being so many women in their military, nor do they pull any punches in in terms of women getting slaughtered just as often as the men. The male and female comrades are completely equal in this regard.

I LOVE that in the female titan arc that's wrapping up in the series, it's Mikasa who ends up taking Annie down. As soaked in tropes as the show is, there are little gender equity flourishes here and there that I appreciate.

And that's not even getting into there being an LGBT character (or two, what's your deal. Reiner?) also treated as not a big deal.

Reiner likes Christa.

It's certainly appreciable how this series treats its female characters as opposed to, say, the vast majority of Jump titles.

A lot of Shonen and fanatasy/sci fi series in general are able to side-step power-related gender issues because they're using Magic or Alchemy or Spirit Power or high-powered technology instead of actual physical combat.

I'm pretty sure Reiner was making a joke and flipping it into a dig at Ymir in that one scene.

Ymir says "Sneaking up with dirty intentions on girls at night?"

Unless he's saying he only LOOKS gay as opposed to BEING gay/bi.

The Christa stuff certainly seems like the former.

You're probably right that it's just a joke.

I had to read that a few times- I think it's just a bad translation where the translator needed to adapt the line to the new language rather than do a straight one for one.

I vaguely remember Isayama commenting that he doesn't see them as gendered figures, or something like that.

Which is why Hanji is a man.

Ahem.

Bad translation. That bubble on the right was actually Ymir talking, not Reiner. She says something about Reiner not looking like he's interested in girls (and it turns out she's wrong). Reiner then responds in kind (and it looks like he's right).

This whole time I'd been thinking Reiner and Bertholdt were getting it on, until he confronted Bert about telling Annie how he felt. His annoyance with Christa tending to his arm doesn't make much sense otherwise.

Ah, thanks - this makes so much more sense. She's alluding to Bert/Reiner's relationship.

I haven't read it in a while but it seemed like he was being sarcastic like "Why don't you just marry me already" when he said it to himself. Especially being so upset about it. But that read was painted by what I guess is a bad translation now.
He has a thing for her. It's a reason he's so snippy towards Ymir, even pre-"She ate our buddy" (who got replaced by Annie?) revelation.

Nah, he was being serious about the marriage thing, even if it's just a running joke about Christa.

I just realized - the Titan that was likely Connie's Mom - is it possible that is what happens when you try to transform in a closed location?

More like the serum or whatever method was used on those people didn't work properly on her because she still had some consciousness left, she just couldn't move because of the limbs and probably fell on the house.

PBS Idea Channel -- Are the Titans from Attack on Titan Evil?

Warning: copious use of animated gifs, image macros, and memes.

Fun fact -- the actual, official Funimation YouTube account posted a comment on the video that said:
We were really excited to see that your latest PBS Idea Channel video was all about Attack on Titan, but then we saw you were using illegal clips and not the officially licensed material in your video.
This would have been great for us to share if it used official videos instead of illegal content…
Please let us know if you'd like to use our official content in the future. We'd be more than happy to provide that to you since we stream the episodes on FUNimation and Hulu websites.
It was summarily successfully marked as spam by other users.

"It's a cruel world out there" seems to be a trigger word for Eren/Mikasa. In the manga it seemed to me like Mikasa intentionally said it to get Eren to transform. Just noticed that from watching the anime.

Maybe it has something to do with Bertholdt having to remind Reiner that they are "Warriors"?

We know Eren, Ymir and Reiner (and Mikasa too) are all subject to various degrees of memory loss. Something tells me that's not just a running theme.

Also, anyone know when the Before The Fall magazine is supposed release in Japan?

Yup. (It says so in your link. :p) I think he's being a tad ambitious, and that it'll end up at say 23-25, but it's nice that he knows what he wants to do and isn't going to throw away the pacing. (Could also bepossible he meant "within 20 volumes" due to a translation error.)

Am new to this. Does it take a month to release a volume? So he might end it in 19 months or so?

What was so bad about it?
Memes, quoting a twitter user, describing a series that you already know if you're watching the video, making a ridiculously huge stretch to apply a message to fictional characters that will one day be defined but aren't yet, the implication that being on a 'PBS' channel has education value whereas this feels like the worst community college substitute teacher one class before fizzling out to a different career.

Just finished catching up quite quickly to the manga after today's season finale.

The mangaka really has no idea where he's going, clearly. Yet another failed plot to kidnap Eren, great. My hope for the anime series is to pretty much shitcan the manga and spun off the story into its own thing.

To be fair, I can't see this ending without Eren seeing the home village in some way. Bert and Ernie are still in play, Mikasa is wounded, Erwin lost an arm and probably lost all of his energy in that last attack on Bert, Eren's probably still too winded to fight at full capacity as a Titan (especially in an open field), and Levi is still wounded.

I wish they had ended the anime at chapter 34 instead of 33. The defenseless squad being approached by titans inside of Wall Rose is a much better cliffhanger than the wall titan, especially the silly way they ended up doing it.

From an interview last year:

“How far ahead do you have Attack on Titan plotted out?”

ISA: In terms of broad strokes, I’ve got it pretty well thought out to way, way down the line. And I’ve got outlines that say like, such-and-such a truth will be revealed in volume 5 and around volume 10, this situation is going to happen. See, if I didn’t decide these things before it sees publication, I wouldn’t even be able to come up with ideas. Although I don’t flesh it out until I’m actually working on it…

I'd be surprised if we don't get to the basement in the next few chapters as the appearance of the Titan that ate Eren's mother should mean they're pretty damn close to Shiganshina. It'd be sheer suicide of course but that's never stopped the Survey Corps.

Just got caught up on the manga. I swear to god if anything happens to Ymir I'm going to have someone's head. ;_;

I wonder if Eren's SSJ form from the last anime episode will actually become a thing in the manga.
I like that it just points out how inconsequential a SSJ2 form really is.

I guess he'll "use it" when he fights Reiner in the anime, for example, but the result is exactly the same whether he uses it or not. It's not like he REALLY acts any differently while hulked out.

I expect him in the manga to look similar to the SSJ2 during a big fight, but maybe they won't go out of their way to call attention to it.

But hey, that fusing with Annie thing in the anime... now THAT'S an interesting glimpse into the manga's future, maybe. An Eren/Ymir/Christa titan voltron versus Bert? Hmmm...

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Like all impatient people after the anime, I just blitzed through the manga.

- So like, Ymir regained herself after like 60 years as an unthinking primal titan?
- Are they alluding that Eren is one of these as well with something they say about him not remembering?
- That fucking monkey.

Also the anime adds a whole lot more order and sense to proceedings while the manga feels like a poorly sketched out stream of things happening at times. NOW WE ARE ALL GOING TO A CASTLE BECAUSE OF THE REASONS. Also interested in how the face in the wall part will be reintroduced in a season 2, or if they'll excuse that being a Mikasa discovery and make it all Hanji.
