Game's fucking awesome! Had my eye on this for a bit. Played up to Stage 2 before I quit because I got to get to the gym without realizing that it's an old school, one-sitting game, lol! I didn't expect that for some reason. It's definitely a tough game, but the controls are tight. Game's got a Ghost N' Goblins-like feel with the armor system. Reminds me a little bit of Iron Sword back on the NES too. Cool game, dudes.

The game has lots of replay value, for me anyways lol

Been replaying the first world for 30 mins now, with no sight of finishing it. Ya.

Achievements unlock, but you can't see the achievement list or the global achievement stats.

The difficulty surprised me, but the controls are really tight. I guess I was expecting it to feel a lot sloppier like a lot of the Amiga platformers it's inspired by.

It's pretty great so far.

This game is rock hard. I've beaten it, but I got the worst ending and then the devs scolded me for it over Twitter. :< It's a really solid title though, I like it loads.

Those challenge levels are fucking tough as nails. I can't beat any of them!

I just spent $10 on a game where you have the start from the beginning of level 1 every time you shut the game off.

I'm fucking retarded. Wow. I thought it'd save your progress at the last checkpoint or something.

Sigh.

I think you can jump to the last level you got to by going left. I'm not sure since I'm still stuck on the first one. Anyone know?

Just tried, it took me to the first checkpoint (I was on level 3). So going left just seems to skip the little tutorial bit.

This game looks awesome. If I had to choose one, Volgarr or Rogue Legacy, what would you guys recommend? Both is also an acceptable answer.

I've paid $90+ on games that do the same and they're some of the best ever so I dunno man.

If this doesn't have any saving for people playing the normal route (I'd expect it for the special route) I am pretty surprised.

This, but I don't like Rogue Legacy.

Can you
break that first wall you spawn to?

Ah there we go, you have to go through it without picking up the shield, grabbing that closes it.

Why the fuck would they make continuing so unfathomably stupid? Holy. Shit.

I think I'd be fine if I had no way to skip forward, it feels so satisfying to blaze through a level it took you 40 minutes to figure out before.

Got it a couple hours ago and I'm enjoying it a bunch. I'm on level 5 and one question is racking my brain. Has anybody figured out how to get up to this treasure chest?

I've played it for a few hours, I can get to the third level without problems now. The game is incredibly cool in its design principles, I can't believe something like this got released on today's market. It's challenging, it flows incredibly well and it makes you feel joy whenever you discover yet another small trick. Thumbs up.

Wow this is very much like Rastan. Right down to the attack animation, the underground cave at the very beginning, and lizard warriors. Loving it so far!

ASG has definitely been going after indies for Steam publishing of late. It's an interesting business move.

Oh and I just realized the Steam page doesn't have a trailer yet, so here's the last official video they put out on the game some time back showing off different stages and stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwk7towH5ys

It's definitely rough graphically, and lacks some of the polish that I like in the background art for 2D games, but I'm hoping the mechanics and level design itself will make the game worthwhile.
I kinda like it's roughness. Real 16-bit games weren't these super colorful hyper detailed pixel dreams that every indie game seems to perpetuate. Sometimes 16-bit games were ugly, with ugly color pallets, with ugly simple backgrounds. Sometimes games weren't Yoshi's Island, sometimes they were Altered Beast and Golden Axe. :p

Made it to level 5 so far. Game is awesome. Controls are perfect. Enemy variety is clearly marked by their appearance. It's not afraid to kick your ass, and it'll be your fault every time.

This game should be getting more attention.

Edit: Crashed going into the second half of level 5. Not cool.

This game is metal. I just took out the first boss and decided to call it a night.

Also, is this acting strange in anybody else's Steam? When I was in game, it didn't say what game I was in, it's not showing on my profile page (and my recent games played is only two instead of the usual three), etc. I just posted a screenshot to my timeline and nada, zilch, nothing. So strange.

It took me a while to beat the first boss, but a lot of that was experimenting with the javelin. Mapping it a button makes it so much easier to spam it. I'm also glad that this isn't a pure action game and theres a (very) light puzzle-platforming element to it. I'm looking forward to the javelin puzzles later on if the ones in the first level were any hint of what's to come.

Also, the use of rumble in this game is very satisfying. The thud from landing from a high place really fits well.

Watching Yacht Club Games stream the game on their Twitch channel. Man is this a punishing game in the vein of old side-scrollers from the past. I'm definitely keeping this in my wishlist until the next big Steam sale.

Is there a good explanation of the save system? I went left at the title screen and it restarted me a crystal warp back from the stage I left. I booted again and going left did nothing. Does it punish you for quitting by removing a level from your progress? If so that is not difficulty, it is pure bullshit. Some of us have lives and have to quit the game before we beat another two levels.

You go left on the title screen. Then when you spawn in the first stage crystal there's a hole in the wall on the left, jump through that.

That makes no fucking sense. Why did they do that?

How is everyone setting up their controls? On my Classic Controller (Wii), I have jump on B, sword on Y, spear on X, roll on A, and zoom out on R.
I'm using arcade stick. I have attack on index finger, jump on middle finger, spear on ring finger, roll on pinky, and view to the right of that. The controls sucked balls till I set everything to separate buttons like that.

Huh. I beat World 2 earlier. Got to World 3. Died a bunch. I just loaded the game up again, used the continue trick, and I start in... World 2? o_O

Nice.

Last night I beat the first level in about forty minutes with almost twenty deaths.

This morning I beat it in seven minutes with no deaths, holla.

Oh hey alternate level 2 wtfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff is going on.
Got ending C and wanted to play through again to see how far I could get in the alt levels. Managed to beat alt level 2, but alt level 3 got me. You have to get a certain treasure to go to the alternate levels from what I understand
basically means you have to get through at least the first stage without getting hit and opening as many chests as you can
and then you have about three lives to beat each alt level before you're forced into the normal levels again.

Wow, I totally lost track of this game, so I had a happy surprise seeing it on Steam this morning. I love arcade action games like Rastan and Black Tiger-- I still break out the boards and play on my Astro City every once and a while-- so Volgarr looks right up my alley. I remember an old thread about the developers asking for feedback and ideas on balancing and level progression; it really struck me how knowledgeable they were about how old action games were designed. Seeing at least one person already disappointed in having to start over every time (sorry, man) I think it means I'm in for a treat.

Whoa, so there's ways to shortcut to stages you've been too? Cool. Throw me in the camp that would have preferred it if that cool treasure/hub room you chill in after a stage is completed was your base/stage select instead, though. I guess that would have defeated the old school, one-sitting spirit though.

Second level has so many cheap deaths with enemy placement, bleh.

Is there an achievement for beating the second boss? Cause I just did and nothing popped.

This is the kind of game I imagined the future would be like when I first got my Mega Drive.

Most definitely old-school done right. All the charm of old games without being outdated or unfairly difficult for coins like the past. Time to die, often.
