New PS VITA LED compared to PS Vita OLED. (Screenshot)

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
LCD looks terrible, as expected for a TFT.

I really don't know why they didn't go with an IPS LCD or even Sony's own Triluminos LCD. Either of those would be much better than this.

Obviously it's for cost, but crippling the best feature of the Vita and bringing it down to Nintendo handheld levels, even below most current smartphones is just silly.

Nobody wants a downgrade, but it really makes the most financial sense. Sales of smartphones and 3DS has suggested that OLED is too weak to be a selling point. Sony went for the moon with the vita, and now they are scaling back after they realized they have bite more than they can chew.

The new Vita looks pretty good here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sw2OFhewhM (when the dude can sort out his exposure)

I wouldn't call this a downgrade and saying this is on the level of Nintendo display hardware is one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard.

I have a white Vita 1000 and I've just preordered a white 2000 model. The screen looks great in the videos I've seen, the back has matte grips instead of glossy ones, it's only 219 grams compared to the 1000's 260 grams (279 grams for the 3G model), and it's 15% thinner with a longer battery life. Sounds pretty great to me. The 1GB of internal storage and micro USB port are just icing on the cake.

Also, I always disliked the Vita's OLED mura effect on black screens; it's pretty hideous and can pull you out of the immersion in a game when it happens in between cut scenes or in a loading screen. In addition, the 2000's screen is warmer, and I've always preferred warmer screens to cooler ones. So I think I'll be happy with my purchase.

i'm an untrained eye. but from what i can tell, that uncharted picture seems a bit unfair to the old vita. this picture (even with glare) makes the old vita look way more vibrant.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
It is a give or take, the OLED has better color saturation and deeper blacks, while the LED Backlit LCD screen is not as vivid, but the screen is far more reliable and sturdy. So it is a tradeoff, new technology that has an expected life that is far shorter than the mature technology that is very reliable in the long run.

Quite a trade off, but at least it isn't a crappy as the fluorescent TFT screens that pervaded previous LCD technology (like the PSP and the DS Lite).

Nope, the mura effect is the splodges of grey you see around the edges of the screen when OLED is used in completely dark surroundings.

So THAT's what that is... I thought it was like colonies of bacteria infecting my screen or something.

Hmm, can it get to a point where the mura effect will damage the screen and hamper my gaming experience?

I feel the best case scenario is that they go with Triluminos for the LCD. Thats probably going to be as good as its going to get to OLED without being OLED. Because lets face it at this current point in time OLED definitely has good points in terms of contrast and color display and LCD can't do it. But OLED is expensive since Samsung owns it and its easy to tarnish or become tainted. Sony please tell me its Triluminos for LCD.

That brings up a good point, insourcing the screen that used to be produced by Samsung (at a premium) should lower the cost of the screen, even if it uses Sony's best stuff right now.

Pretty good, but for hygiene reasons I don't like buying used portable consoles myself.
They might have been jizzed on etc.

The Walking Dead bundle has the OLED model. The LCD model hasn't been announced for the US or Europe yet.

I think the smallest Triluminos screen is used on the Xperia Z Ultra and that phone is over $900 contract free.

So basically that's not happening soon.

Does this mean the OLED ones will eventually be discontinued when released here in the states?

If so, this might push me into picking one up soon, despite the handful of games I actually want to play on it.

Don't know about future plans. However, for the time being, Sony said they will continue selling the 3G/WiFi Vita OLED alongside the new one (which is WiFi only). The new bundle will be released on October 31st for ¥24,129.

that is what always happens with Sony's product refreshes.

Eventually the stock will dry up on the original (doubt that will be when this new model is released over here but eventually)

The new models aren't even out of Japan yet. It'll be a couple of weeks before the new vitas hit the west. Also, when these new vitas come the old ones are not just going to disappear, the old bundles are still selling so Sony would be crazy to just end them.

Well I bought a Xperia Z over the summer and it was around 600 USD. There is many factors in the cost, it comes with built in memory that is more than 1GB ( 16-32GB to be exact) it has an Android OS that is not owned by Sony, has special waterproof features and screen protection technology (dragontrail glass) and to top it off it has a regular LCD screen ( which is good but nothing special, matter of fact it looks faded compared to Triluminos). And finally, the technology for Triluminos is owned by Sony, so it probably won't be all that bad to have on vita. The vita was $300 with a screen they paid another company for. I think its possible.

Alright, I've managed to get my hands on an AMOLED Vita so I went back to the store for another round. Here is the video. My hands were extra shaky today so I apologize in advance.

http://youtu.be/a9_dB82DmHU

It's worth mentioning that the two units were sitting at different angles due to space constraints. The top Vita is leaning forward. This may or may not have an effect on how they appear in the video.

I have also taken some stills:

This is an article from a few days ago but I haven't seen a topic made about a piece of information it alleges.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/09/new-playstation-vita-announced-release-date/

The company says that it'll ultimately discontinue the OLED WiFi model, but that the 3G/WiFi OLED version will continue to be available and will find its way into similar discount bundles in the future -- make of that what you will.

Shouldn't this be big news? If it is a topic should probably be made, but it would be nice to find better sourcing.

Static images can't even really show the biggest drawback of any LC display compared to an OLED, particularly for games (response time).

Yeah, the OLED actually looks a bit TOO vibrant in some of those. I'm guessing it's more a situation where you can't lose (unless mura really gets to you or you suffer burn in, in which case it's kind of clear cut.)

... Though Durante just made a good point. Still, response time seems to be way better than it was in the past, I know I barely if ever notice it on iOS devices or Nexus 7, and even Nintendo displays have been good there and they tend to go for crappier ones.

Just had my buddy in japan put in a order on amazon JP for me:

- PS Vita 2000 Black
- PS Vita 2000 White
- 64GB card
- PS Vita 2000 screen protector x2
- PS Vita 2000 case x2

$550 well spent :) Should have everything in the US 3-4 days after release.

Will post impressions as soon as I can

Why are we discussing the comparison of 2 different screens (that we are probably looking at on an LCD panel anyway) when the real issue is that screen bezel on the 2000.

In a few of those pics, the OLED does a look a bit over-saturated color-wise. But side by side video comparison where it shows both systems head on and playing the same game at the same time would probably be the best comparison. If someone could do that, that would be a better tell.

Just curious. Why are you buying two PS Vita? Also any particular reason(s) why you are ordering Japanese PS Vita than the US/EU PS Vita? Is there some hidden advantage(s) or something I am not aware of?

looks like there's a green tint relative to oled vitas
honestly, it's not a big deal, you'll never notice it if you dont have the two vitas side by side

poopninjamvc3mk

I sucked six dicks to get this tag.
I'm probably buying a slim one either way because severe oled burn-in scares me, but Imma wait on a professional outlet to compare it when it releases like DF/Eurogamer or somebody.

Besides the obvious faster load times on the new Vita and the difference in colors, you can notice more details in the OLED screen than the new LCD screen.

Is this comparison valid?

On the left is the Vita and on the right is the Xperia L.

Vita has a 220ppi OLED screen and Xperia L a 222ppi LCD Screen.
