The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

I'm done talking about reviews. Especially if people are still unable to grasp that reviews are by nature, subjective.

They aren't car manuals. Detailed lists and explanations of mechanics and assessments of game system and depth. They're descriptions of a person's personal experience with the game.

Instead of focusing so much on the reviews, why don't we go back to talking about the game itself and why it's fun and good?

I'm sure that'll do more to convince lurkers to give this game a chance(and combat the effect of the reviews) than to keep bringing up how the reviewers are scrubs who probably can't even do fireballs!!!

No use getting worked up, there's been and still is PLENTY of talking about why the game is so fun and good going on here. It's not even about convincing anyone about anything, there's just an undeniable level of quality and craftsmanship at play here that is being completely misrepresented.

That's a shame. The game is definitely not for everyone regardless of its quality but to call that quality into question with false claims about how well it works is terrible.

It definitely does, right after the section where you finish defending against the tankers with the shield it says "Use the right stick to extend the wonder-liner up the building to create a ladder."

ok, but, not the same as "use the stick for specials, if you want."

people are implying platinum didnt expound on details, on purpose.

so saying i can build a ladder is different than explaining the stick can replace the touchpad

it's possible for negative reviews to not be full of shit, and simultaneously still be a good, fun game.

i notice IGN keeps coming up, but they gave it a 74,

64 outlets reviewed the game, several scored it worse than IGN,

I could never stay mad at the Wonderful 101 for very long. It's just immensely likeable, and so full of personality and verve that I couldn’t help but grow to love it. After that initial difficulty curve, there’s so much here that’s worth sticking around for – particularly the ending, which goes on for about two and a half hours and builds to a gloriously unpredictable crescendo of ridiculousness.

i mean, sounds to me like he enjoyed it, and like people here are focused on the control complaints and the number attached to the review

99% of the time I love posting and reading these threads.

but whenever it goes back to responding to criticism by attacking skill level, either here with reviews or with other games like Vanquish and the "you just didn't play it right" deflection I just can't help but shake my head.

I didn't even really have issue with your initial post bringing them up. Just the line of discussion it started. Why can't us PG heads just like the games while accepting that alot of people might not? Why can't their reasons for disliking something be just as valid as ours?(and let's be real, how many reviews are actually saying that they disliked the game and that people shouldn't buy it?)

as for the game being misrepresented I already explained on the last page why reviewers might have drawn the conclusions that they did.

Not to contradict you because I agree with the general sentiment, but I do think a lot of Godhand's LTTP appeal was because of that infamous 3.0/10 IGN review and the backlash directly from it.

Maybe.

I think God Hand is mostly popular though because it's cutscenes and gameplay are just so goddamn unique though. Like there's really nothing out there like it.

I think in time 101 will be seen in a similar light.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not attacking skill level at all. You don't have to be a pro to question what's happening and why it's happening while you're playing a game. I wouldn't ask that of the average gamestop gamer but if your job is to analyze and review games then I would expect you to do it.

I don't care about scores at all honestly, I thought that IGN review was fair enough just because she actually said that the game has alot to offer if you stick with it and get better. That's atleast something.

But I get where you're coming from about just wanting to move on, I wrote that initial post at like 3 am yesterday and I didn't intend to start anything. It was the same thing with Bayonetta, not necessarily the scores but the amount of hate that game got when it came out was insane.

I'm down for dropping this conversation though, I've honestly said all I had to say on the subject anyway.

Maybe.

Actually I will say one final thing, I think that admitting that these games get seen in a better light a couple years down the line when they've been digested is kind of an admission of failure on the part of reviewers. Atleast the ones that outright dismiss any sort of possibility that the problems might be due to a lack of understanding on their part. Not skill level mind you, just understanding. When something is still cherished and played 5, 10 or even 20 years down the line that usually means it's not a broken mess.

I have no idea what is causing people to have so many problems outside of maybe panicking mid combat and trying to rush draw a symbol.
This is one of my problems. It occasionally takes me several tries to draw a
bomb
in the size I'm aiming for (either with the stick or GamePad), so I chalk it up to wanting to do too many things too quickly without having a solid grasp on timing or each shape's margin of error. Then again I'm cruising through Easy as a practice run and leaving precision training to the higher difficulties once I start working through those.

Whelp. I'm gonna cave and get it. Does it use the pro pad? if so how does it play? I love using the pro pad when given the option

I don't own the pro pad, but it is compatible yes. I believe you need the gamepad for certain parts, but you can play most of the game with the pro pad and I'm sure it's fine. The right stick is most people's (myself included) preferred method of drawing unite morphs anyway from what I've seen.

This game is nuts and confusing, but a lot of fun. I'm kind of lost on how I'm supposed to beat these cars with a shield in front. I kept trying to swat his bombs back, but nothing worked. I knock his shield off, but no idea how I'm doing it.

Also, I installed this to a usb stick. I've heard they should be used because of frequent save writes, but isn't the internal memory flash?

Just got this on Wednesday, can't stop playing it, as much as i want to continue, i have to force myself to quit so i don't finish it to quickly, it's been a while since i've had a game suck me in like this has

I've played through the game with just the pro controller and other than some parts where you have to use the game pad screen (one of the minus button screen options lets you swap the screens so you don't have to use the gamepad but the audio will be swapped as well) it plays perfectly fine. I've had no issues with quickly drawing various shapes with the right stick either.

Just completed the game, it was Wonderful. Really Wonderful. One of the best games I have ever played, and I have barely scrapped the surface of content this has.

Well done Platinum, well done.

My only complain is long loading times and the sections where you have to shoot things with machines are a bit ugh.

But damn what a GOOD game. Has anyone unlocked any secret characters yet?

The shmup sections grew on me, especially in
009-A and B where you can slow down time with Wonder Energy to dodge and aim the missiles.

Man I´m having a blast

But any tips guys? I think I got the hang of it but...I would love to hear some strategies like how do you keep track of the enemies xD I kinda got used to it now but sometimes I get hit.

So for pure platinum you have to absolutely not get hit right? Besides doing crazy combos and stuff

You have to avoid getting hit, but if you buy the Ukemi upgrade, any damage you Ukemi out doesn't count towards the score screen. Except in the prologue and the Kagooh Regah

Usually you don't need to pay as much attention to an enemy that just attacked as there is a gap between attacks. Always be on the lookout for energy being drawn in as that is often an indicator that an enemy is preparing for an attack.

So how does that prevent you from not getting damage (and getting a platinum for damage) unless you lower your health outside of battle through other means, which aren't always available?

That end game was absolutely bonkers.

Spoilers for end game and post end game:

This is the gurren lagann of video games. The action kept getting crazier and crazier. The final boss was equally ridiculous. All the one shot unite morphs you get we're cool too. And the epilogue was great. I couldn't even rest when the credits were rolling lol. Plus the unite goggles were really cool. Did I forget mother platinum? You gotta love the self referential humor. I did have some trouble with the last boss. Due to the weird placement of his weak spots. Plus the unite platinum and unite wonderful look amazing lol

There were also a couple of glitches around the end game and it got a little difficult making some of the later unite morphs (mostly due to my control), but there were some really weird glitches.

Overall I think the game is around 8.5-9.5.
It gets held back by some questionable design choices for the bosses and some glitches that make it difficult to proceed past certain points in the later game, but the combat is obviously amazing. Can't wait to play it again.

I thought it only prevented lethal damage?
I don't have it myself, instead opting for Hero Sense and Hero Time.

How does Hero Counter work? I tried it once on a mission that I ended up powering down the console due to plans (wasn't much progress lost anyway). I wasn't able to work it: what's the timing for it, and does Hero Sense help with the timing?

There were definitely some

.

The Wonderful Mart description of the item is dumb.

any kind of damage (except damage that flattens you to the ground I believe) can be canceled by pressing A right before touching the ground.

It seems to also work by simply pressing and holding A the moment you get hit and keep it holded until you touch the floor.

Fighting the turtles when you have unite drill is NOT a good idea. Turn that shit off in the menu because otherwise it ain't happening.

The problem is that whenever you dodge it hits the turtles and sends your guys flying. Turning it off solves that problem and makes things alot easier.

I think you mean Drill Spring and yeah I found that out yesterday myself lol

You kinda need to be close to guts the stomp and since the turtles always come in twos, the other one likes to snap its head at you through the other one when you're trying to knock it over

So yeah it absolutely needs to be off or that encounter is super dumb to deal with.(unless you just abandon that strategy altogether, make a big hammer and go ham on the first one. I plan on doing that do deal with Turtles once I unlock

Thanks for the tips, now is there a way to extend your combo?

I saw some people using tombstone to juggle opponents but I can´t do it!

What is it? Is it timing?

Does he
have any special alterations to the morph
? I know quite a few of the
unlockable characters have either a new Morph (Immorta, Nelson's wonder form, Vorkken, Luka, and Chewgi) or an addition to an existing one (supposedly Alice's whip has a freezing passive), but I am somewhat in the dark on the others (except that apparently young wil is a joke character from what I've read)
.

Errr well yeh of course we want to see it, i know i am. But its probably hidden behind some bullshit 'get pure platinum all game' shit right?

Got 3-A Pure Platinum'd. This one wasn't easy honestly, forced me to really learn how to efficiently deal with those turtles. Mission 4 only gives you 2:40 if you want platinum and you have to fight 2 big robots and 2 turtles. Definitely turn off drill spring and if you manage to flip one on its back use the fist because you'll be immune to the flame geysers.

The final 3 missions have to be done with no saving so it's tricky, the mission ends with 2 turtles guarding the exit and you need a decent combo on them. Thankfully they give you a solid amount of time to just style on them.

So, I just finished my first playthrough on Normal and simply wanted to voice my humble opinion that The Wonderful 101 is already up there with some of my favorite games ever.

And, after taking a peek at some stuff, I have a feeling that it's only going to get even better.

Just beat the game. Wonderful experience overall. I'm still in disbelief at how they were able to up their own awesome and kick your ass at times you thought it was over. It's a good type of exhaustion, haha.

Onto round 2, need to collect everything and complete those secret missions.

Well both Kamiya and Saur play with the right stick, and majority of hardcore action game fans I've personally seen have said they consider it superior as well. It simply isn't as efficient to use the touch screen if you want to maximize your combos, etc. It's fine if you prefer the touch screen though. There's a reason they have multiple ways of playing this game.

Mario as well.

Lots of Bayonetta references,
TO THE MOON!

I remember Bayonetta saying that when she does the headbutt counter (lol) to the building that Balder throws at her during that fight. I lost it when I heard that in 101!

The 6 wheeled trucks that the GDA use are from Bayonetta, so is that plane you see in the flashback scene. I think it's called the Valkyrie in Bayo, it has a weird mast on top.

Where is the OST... I must be able to hear that song where [Endgame]
Vorken spins in space
. There's some other times it plays, but it sticks out for me then.
Sell it on the Platinum Store or something.

That track was so inspiring, I remember both Okami and Bayonetta having a similar type of track near the end. So perfect.

Kahkoo Regah's where you only have 10 members are stressful as hell. I hate that if even one of your members is away from the group, you can't dodge or attack or do anything but helplessly running around looking for them. Maybe it's because I've turned rumble off, but I don't get any feedback if I've lost a member somehow. It'll look like I've still got everyone, but then I try to dodge or block and I can't. I don't get why I can't at least do the same dodge/block that you can when playing as a single member.

Higher difficulity levels. Guarantees to make you play the game for 35-40+ hours (if not more), and you get to enjoy the game even more.

Guys, any tips on how to maximize the damage, and reduce the amount of batteries used on the fast cheetah like geathjerks?

Also, switching to Japanese voices is also highly recommended!

Absolutely NOT. The game has a rather mediocre japanese dub (villians are the only best part of it). The english one, with all the different country accents and HUGE voice talents shits all over it.
And I say that as someone that usually prefer japanese dub on the animes that I wqatch than the english ones.
Also Wonder Green being my favourite character loses all the charm it has in english.

Pro controller or even Classic Controller. Basically everything other than Wiimotes :)

(All Wii U compatible controllers with 2 sticks, pretty much)

You never need the Gamepad. There's a picture-in-picture mode (select) for the indoor stuff.

English dub is amazing for anybody who grew up watching cartoons and shit like Power Rangers. Absolutely zero desire to switch to the Japanese dialogue as the English speaking cast 100% nail the kind of game it is.

It's an uncomfortable thought, but as many are likely put off by the developer's name on the box as are encouraged by it. Platinum's games are self-consciously hardcore, rewarding the initiated while seeming oblique and overly demanding to newcomers.

It's almost uncanny how perfectly this applies also to the reaction to this game.

Rest of the paragraph:
Those who played it exactly like a bog-standard cover shooter can't really be blamed, having been trained to do so by the genre rather than the game. While this is a rare Platinum title with an adequate tutorial, it still leaves plenty unsaid. It might tell you what the buttons do, but it doesn't really tell you how to play it.

replace cover-shooter with brawler :)
