New Info on PS4s Noise Level, Power Consumption, Media Performance etc

my ps3 is pretty quiet. it's a 1 year-ish after launch. the 360 is like two jet engines in comparison. good to hear it will be (even) more quiet.

Bravo? No, apparent bravo. We've been through a console launch (or more) before, don't believe everything you read.
The PS4 has faster / more technology, in a smaller space AND included the transformer inside. I personally suspect this isn't going to be the quietest console out there (do you expect them to say it's a vacuum?)

We'll see, I hope it's true - but seriously, wait for some serious confirmation.
Disclaimer: before you say it, big Sony fan here, not some Microsoft fan, but I understand tech, this is very straightforward stuff.

Why would you ever think it was going to be the quieter than the XBO or the quietest console out there? When did Sony or anyone else make that claim? Sony said quieter than PS3. They said the system is quiet.

It's nearly impossible to both have the better and more compact design and also the crown for noise reduction. And if your expectation is that it better be quieter than XBO or they have zero justification for making a compact console with an internal PSU, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I expect quiet. But not quietest of the gen.

I can't hear my ps3 slim unless I literally put my head right against it. I don't see why a console needs to be any more quiet than that.

A "low noise level" is a somewhat vague and relative term. This is something I really want to hear decibels at specific distance stats on from both manufacturers.

Too bad about the Blu-Ray drive noise, though sounds like that is expected and will be mitigated by probably not being used that much and really I'd rather have a faster drive if that is the trade-off. I assume the XB1 Blu-Ray will have the same issue. I'm planning on all digital all the time for both consoles and for all media, but it is interesting. I like the fact that there seems to be a lot of thought that has gone into different levels of operation of the PS4, that is great from a reliability standpoint, but also just energy consumption.

ITT: Some people learn that a 6x Blu Ray drive is louder than a 2x.

And I don't see the issue honestly. Games are all now installed on your HDD. DVD and Blu-ray movies will spin at 1x like normal. (It's streaming the movie as it plays, why would that ever be greater than 1x?)

You get initial 6x spin of the disc to make sure a physical game is in there (if the game purchase was physical), then it stops and you hear nothing from the optical drive. Or it spins at 6x speed while installing which will install quickly.

Why is anyone concerned with the optical drive speed. Consider the extremely limited times it will be used at 6x speeds. Not for movies, not for games except install and disc check, not for DVD's, not for anything else but those two situations.

Wait. Where are you getting this information from? Why would I need to configure my router?

Are you suggesting the PS App won't be talking to the PSN servers but instead directly to the PS4?
Maybe their only talking about the PS4 acting as a webserver for second screen stuff, and the PS App can connect to their servers if you're not at home.
At least I hope, or else it's going to be a less than ideal situation.

I was using it as a figure of speech, not literally the quietest console out there, I thought that was obvious, perhaps lost in text form.
My point is not just that I'm not expecting the literal quietest console out there but my personal expectation is that this is,.. well a fairly noisy little box when the fans need to whirr up. I hope I'm wrong but it's fucking PACKED with hardware, in a surprisingly small case for a launch console.

As I said, we'll see. Be fan fucking tastic if I'm incorrect.

I see what you did there.

Doesn't the PS4 automatically install every game anyway? You're only going to hear the driving spinning for 5-10 minutes.

Exactly. People thinking their blu-ray movies are going to be coming off a 6x speed blu-ray drive at anything greater than 1x spin aren't thinking clearly.

This is generally a lot of PR nonsense regarding fans and noise. Stepless fan doesn't reduce fan noise at full load, they don't tell you which PS3 they are comparing it to, and of course they use the term generally which implies in some use cases the PS4 is louder.

Uhm, no, it actually makes perfect sense.
Imagine you can dissipate 100 watt at fan level 1 and 250 watt at fan level 2.
So what do you do when you have to dissipate 150 watt?

No, that's the Xbox One. I don't think the PS4 does that.

The PS4 does install every game. I believe they announced it at the PS4 unveiling.

And because people get confused every single time that's mentioned, installing just means it'll read most (if not all) of the data off the hard drive, you will still need the disc in the drive.

That too, but I'm more laughing at people utterly shocked that a Blu Ray disc rotating at 6x speed would produce more sound than one rotating at 2x speed.

In other news boiling water is hotter than lukewarm water. More as this scientific breakthrough unfolds.

I believe its option to install games on PS4.

There is no option, it does it automatically for disc-based games last time I checked.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-sony-details-final-ps4-spec

Eurogamer makes it seem it's definitely not optional in that article.

The PS4 has a system called PlayGo that caches all reads of the disc to the hard drive. If no reads are being done, PlayGo will gradually copy the entire game based off of developer defined priority.

I fucking hope so, so fucking much. This bullshit "wishy washy" "it'll load on, in the background, eventually, as you play - promise!!!" nope fuck off and fuck you.

I want full GTAV style, 10 to 20 minute shitty installs. Why do I want this? Because it's CERTAIN all my loads, FIRST TIME are fast.
Why else do I want this? SSD in my PS4, justl ike my PS3.

I do not want to load the game from optical ever - I just want to BUY it on optical because downloading fucking blows for a heap of reasons.

My phat PS3 was leaf blower loud.

My slim PS3 is so much better, nearly silent (except when I play TLOU, that really pushes the hardware I guess).

Very glad to hear launch PS4s will be nice and quiet, and we won't have to wait for a hardware refresh for a reasonably quiet console.

Do PS3's excessively heat up when playing a blu-ray movie? That is hardly resource intensive lol. I don't think my slim ever does...

The latter question could be asked about any console or electronics device with a fan ever. As long as it very rarely reaches that upper most limit (which step-less fans aid towards), it shouldn't be an issue.

My Ps3 fat sounds like a turbine when running Netflix lol.

I really need to take it apart and clean it.

Webserver to me sounds like your hosting the stuff rather then a cloud machine doing the heavy lifting. It also a matter of Push vs Pull, when your the Webserver, your pulling info. as opposed to having it pushed to you by a cloud. It is an interesting choice of words, I guess we can count on host advantage, unlike every game on XBO having dedicated servers.

Seriously? They're not talking about P2P for multiplayer here. They're talking about a second screen app. Has nothing to do with dedicated servers vs P2P for multiplayer games.

I want to see the actual console working. People having hands on, testing it, etc. Enough of articles like this one. Show the console, the os, etc.

Will wait until the information comes from a 3rd party testing it, rather than Sony themselves. It's encouraging that they're at least talking about it though.. so it can't be that bad.

  • The noise level of the console during operation is generally much smaller than it was on the PS3.
The word "generally" has me somewhat worried here. My PS3 phat isn't exactly quiet, especially after a hour under heavy-load. It isn't on the same level as the jet-egines of the Xbox 360, but it's annoying to hear.

I really don't think they're referring to Playstation 3 (phat).

I have a ps3 slim that's about 3 years old. I clean it out every once in a while and never hear the thing playing games. Compared to my old phat ps3 the thing is whisper quiet.

How do so many people think consoles are too loud? How do you even hear that shit when it's next to your TV?

I've had gaming PCs for many years, so I'm used to the sound. But really? Probably the same folks who wonder why their console melts when it's clogged with dust.

Most of it is just fanboy dick waving.
