PS4 XMB @ EuroGamer Expo (Off screen footage)

I'm confused. Is this what you see when you turn on the console, or what pops up when you push the home button (touch pad button?), or something else?

It will be like the Vita, this is what you will see when you turn the PS4 on, this OS is always running and is what you will see when you press the PS button.

Me too. I hope either "name request," or "edit username" is one of them. I need to change my PSN name badly, I'll even pay a $1 for it because it's that bad.

It doesn't look like it, one is requests to share your real name with friends and the other is what your real name is set as.

I hope there's a dynamic background ala PS3 XMB... Also, I hope the glitter makes a return. Am I the only one who likes that crap? I love how it looks.

The wave in the background moves around the screen, so it is dynamic, older screenshots also show different hues of purple and blue, so it seems likely that it will be at least similar to the PS3 in that the colour might change depending on time and date.

Will it let you show your real name in multiplayer games? While playing versus people, in leaderboard listings etc?

From what they have said I don't think so, it seems that your real name is for friends that you allow, I would hope that is what they will see in MP instead of your user name.

Is it just me, or do I remember hearing something from Sessler saying that the XMB is badly made compared to the 360's? I hope he looks at this or at least played with this...

He wasn't really wrong, the XMB when the PS3 was a hog and technically wasn't designed well, it used a ton of resources and was missing a lot of features. Sony reduced those so developers could keep up with the larger pool the 360 had but at the same time didn't plan ahead which is why we didn't get cross-game chat. The 360 however from the start used 32mb, has always used that and has been programmed pretty well generally to fit all the extras in they wanted to do.

This is a common opinion in the media. At least it was a couple years ago before the last 360 update.

I agree with it!

Yeah that's been the impression i've got too, but there was an AC4 interview with one of the multiplayer leads who apparently said this

“There are very specific next-gen features which we’re catering for as well, which you won’t have on current gen. Not just graphical improvements, but certain other things,” says Kieken.

While they’re cagey about what they can and can’t say about next-gen features, certain versions, for example, will show your true name in multiplayer. Streaming elements are also being utilised on the next consoles, and Browne notes the obvious performance improvements: current-gen SKUs will be 30FPS, while the Xbox One and PS4 versions will be 60FPS “at a much higher resolution”.

They didn't quote him specifically so the writer could be interpreting next gen features as that I suppose.

Why would you not expect a bland menu system not to be snappy? We're not looking at anything complex here so I don't understand why you would expect it to be anything other than lightning quick.

It's a navigational menu. No one wants anything fancy. They want it clean, informative, direct, and most of all, FAST. You can check all those boxes with the drop-down XMB.

Press the PS button: Brings up the menu in this video
Hold the PS button: Allows you to adjust certain controller settings

Do you know anything about the recording functions? Can you turn on the DVR and record for as long as you want and transfer those video files to your PC for editing? Or are there limitations?

I'm pretty sure the system is always "recording", and pressing Share will give you access to your last fifteen minutes of gameplay.

Doubt it's an actualy retail kit... It's useless to have that 2 months before release.

Btw the test kits and using the same form factor as the retail.

Nothing's never useless for someone like Naughty Dog, just saying!

The only thing that runs on a retail console is signed code...and there's no signed code available anywhere yet (not until actual games get manufactured in early november)... So if he had a retail (he doesn't) then he could boot it and look at the Dynamic Menu... and then that's pretty much it... Even PSN is not up yet I'm sure.

If it's a retail then it's a nice paper weight for the next 2 months.

Like I said in my previous mail, the testkits now look exactly like a retail kit.

I can't wait until all the video game sites do the break down of the system so we can see inside.

Nintendo sent the Wii U's out about 2 weeks early to press, but didn't let anyone post over 30 seconds of video or something weird like that. So you get dumb Giantbomb videos like this. I wonder if Sony and Microsoft will have similar restrictions. I guess it's more fun to have those launch day 5 hour live streams though.

Has there been any info about whether we'll be able to change the color of the LED strip on the console itself? I'd love to see pictures of it with a red or green LED.

There is a required system update for day one to connect online too right? So I suppose it's possible some interface features aren't on it yet.

They've been making consoles for a couple of weeks now, no way that the final system software is ready 3 months in advance.

Are you basing this off of any real information or is this all your opinion?

Haven't found a Source from Sony, but i've seen some people discussing it as if it was known. Plus the PS3 and Vita had them too. I imagine it's speculation at this point. Especially since they started manufacturing around 3 weeks ago.

Demonite has said that it can change, but didn't say under what conditions.

On the other hand, I'm anticipating we'll be getting something along the lines of "Yellow strip of death" in the future though.

Suggested not required, but yes there's a day one update.

Looks pleasantly quick. Hope it doesn't chug during loading screens and such because that's usually when I'm sending chat messages the most.

Darn, maybe one day I'll find someone online that will know how to pronounce my PSN name correctly. Everyone calls me "boyj," "yoboyj." or "j." When it's actually pronounced like "yobooooyj," it's supposed to be like there shouting it so I sound cool.

This name maybe just to early for online gaming... or I'm just bad at online names.

As you can see I really need a name change Sony :(

Even PSN is not up yet I'm sure.
That seems surprising - I would think they'd want to have something up internally at this point for testing and for the ability to get signed code onto the PS4s they've started manufacturing. I'd certainly want teams like Naughty Dog to be able to test that kind of thing out, if I were Sony.

Does it matter which side you stand it on if you want to have the PS4 vertical? For aesthetic reasons I want it to be the other way up than that photo...

And what's wrong with that?

Naughty Dog are one of the top first-party studios at Sony, they get one of the first consoles of the production line. Sits in the office looking beautiful, they haven't got much time to be playing games anyway.

It's not really a secret that developpers don't use actual PSN/Xbox Live...

And anyway you don't get signed code until your game is sent in submission and approved (by Sony/Microsoft) so that won't happen for a litle while. I REALLLLLYYYY doubt that any of the launch titles finished in advance lol.

Sure....or they could get a testkit that looks EXACTLY the same but actually runs the daily build of the game I assume they are working on right now. Why would you want a retail kit?
