Media Create Sales: Week 38, 2013 (Sep 16 - Sep 22)

Oh. I didn't knew it was mistranslated. I beg your pardon for spreading misinformations.

I was looking for the original interview, but now i can't even find any quote on the information at all. I just remember that lots of people were talking about on these threads that DQX were the double of the retail sales.

I know DQX is the number one in the lifetime rankings, followed by the virtual console games that were released on that 30 cent program. The only wiiu games in the top 20 are NSMB, Pikmin, Nintendoland, Monhan ultimate, Lego City and Wario (so the lower end of the rankings probably is pretty small). If you count eshop games, Pokemon Scrumble and Art academy are there too.

Dragon quest 10 eshop has outsold all the 30yen titles now that's impressive

I think there is a good chance that the 3DS might pass the GBA by the end of this year. For that to happen the 3DS will need to sell 2.6m (or 185k avg/week) in the next 14 remaining weeks of this year. Looking at garaph, the 3DS apparently sold 2.3m (165k avg/week) in its last 14 weeks last year (2012), and with the help of Pokemon, MH4, Puzzle and Dragons and Mario Party (2014?), I don't think 2.6m will be that hard to achieve.

Impressions from retailers

MH4 and 3DS LL demand remains high for both, stock problems continue.

Get ready for really low Zelda numbers

Wii U is killing all Nintendo franchises, damn. I fear for Mario 3D World, especially since I don't know if people getting the bundle at the holidays will want another Mario game so soon.

Id the data is correct, regarding last year, then there should be no problem.

MonHon PD and Poke is a killer line up.

Last year 3DS had really huge december due to Animal Crossing release.

Also observing last two weeks it seems like MH4-3DS combo is sucking sales out of whole market and doubly so from Vita since they are competing for same crowd. In few weeks it should be back to more normal sales split.

Looking at Pikmin3, W101 and possibly Zelda sales I think Nintendo will close itself even more in the mindset that they need to push more Mario games.

Pikmin has been selling decently so I hope they continue this franchise. I don't think a Zelda remake performing badly will hurt their confidence in that brand much. W101 probably tells them that it is safer to invest in known IPs rather than creating new ones though, so let's see what happens!

Stop betting, you aren't good.

Media Create reports shortage of MH4 packaged version that leads to increased digital sales.

i'll ask one more time, and maybe you'll take me off of ignore to answer this. What proof do you have that WWHD or any other of the new 1st party games are gonna do bad? you obviously base all of your analyzations (which are nothing but assumption in reality) off of first year performance. even though you say just like everybody else that the Wii U needs compelling SW to sell, you're downplaying the SW that's coming out. i'm not the "silver-lining" type of person, nor do I claim to be optimistic. but i know that these are new IP's of franchises that people know and love. just because in your deluded opinion you feel these are rehashes doesn't mean that's what other people are gonna think. you DO NOT represent the Japanese userbase.

Wind Waker HD is for the last hour the best selling new release of this week on Amazon.

Crisis averted.

Just wait till Wednesday and you will see how much of a bomb WWHD is.

I guess I should thank you. If you hadn't mentioned the predictions I wouldn't have remembered we should already be predicting for October...

Edit: Anything besides PXY and GTAV will be lucky to sell 100k. Not sure if it's worth it.

Any first-day sellthrough numbers? I have no idea how sinobis blog works.

Sinobi doesn't posts first-day info anymore. It's another blog: http://ameblo.jp/ore-no-web3rd/

The first-day sell-through is already posted, but it is now private to his approved followers. Someone usually posts on 2ch anyway (and someone already has), but I like to wait until the blog makes it public because people like to post a lot of fake stuff on 2ch.

I made a separate thread about this interview in general, but here Nagoshi weighs in with why they made a PS4/PS3 cross-gen title and his prognosis on the Wii U audience for Yakuza.

Also the Vita game is a... separate thingy? I'm rather confused, I assumed it was just remote play.

http://www.edge-online.com/features/an-audience-with-toshihiro-nagoshi/

Edge said:
Edge: Yakuza 1&2 HD came out for Wii U; were you not tempted to take the series multiplatform from now on?

Nagoshi: The PlayStation format has a lot of users, so we knew that our audience is there. With the HD versions, we had already made the game once for PS2 and then in HD, so it was quite easy to port it to Wii U, whereas [porting] a whole new title is a bit tricky. I was interested in the Wii U format and curious about how many Wii U users would be interested in the Yakuza series, and the only way to find that out was to try releasing something. It was an experiment. But the sales weren’t great.

Edge: Why are you releasing the game simultaneously on PS4 and PS3?

Nagoshi: We had committed to making a PS4 launch title, but when I thought about the users – well, the PS4 is cheaper than hardware used to be, but it’s still not cheap, so I decided we’d be letting our fans down if we didn’t also release a PS3 version. That’s why we’re making both versions available on the same day.

Edge: How will the game connect with Vita?

Nagoshi: We will release a Vita version that will work with Crossplay, but we haven’t decided the business model yet, like whether it will be a free download or not. For now, we can only confirm that it will be available at launch and compatible with both the PS3 and PS4 versions of Yakuza: Isshin. We’re still worrying about the details…

As a side note, sorry to any Yakuza fans, but it sounds like you're not getting Yakuza 5 in the West.

If it wasn't obvious by now, publishers have little to no faith on the PS4. Sega had no problems making Yakuza Kenzan PS3 exclusive, even though it was the antonym in the dictionary for the word cheap. PS3 also had a few shared games with the PS2, like PS4 is gonna share games with the PS3. The difference is that the PS3 versions were timed exclusives:

[PS3] Dynasty Warriors 6 - Nov 2007
[PS2] Dynasty Warriors 6 Special - Oct 2008

[PS3] Dynasty Warriors Gundam - Mar. 2007
[PS2] Dynasty Warriors Gundam Special - Feb 2008

This round publishers aren't even willing to give the same timed exclusivity to the PS4.

That said, simultaneous releases are better than no releases at all.

On the contrary, I don't think Rayman Legends is worth predicting since I doubt it will sell more than a few thousand units. It's the perfect title to screw up our results by percentage.

Definitely DR 1/2. I think that one will surprise a lot of people. I'm not always the biggest Vita supported but even as a re-release I'm pegging this one at a >60k first week.

Zelda is less than 30% sellthrough, armored core 30%, legend of heroes 60% and orochi 40-50%.

I'm taking the non-committal answer about Ishin as a negative as well. Oh well, I still have to get around to playing 4 anyway.

I was looking at the various third party publishers approaches to the transition.
The disparity in volume both of cross-gen titles and next-gen only titles between Western publishers and Japanese publishers is so stark.

Setting aside that it means the PS4 is probably going to have a pretty rough 2014, I feel like Japanese pubs in being slow to move again are running the risk of their relevance diminishing even further this coming gen in the global market.

PSV hardware will probably be depressing.Yeah, count me in. :p

It looks like Armored Core: Verdict Day is underperforming badly. While Armored Core V did it really well (almost tripled Armored Core 4 sales), its legs were very short and the game didn't seem to be well-liked. From Software's sales target for Armored Core: Verdict Day is 200.000 units.

[PS3] Armored Core 4 (From Software) {2006.12.21} - 36.446 / 83.849
[PS3] Armored Core: For Answer (From Software) {2008.03.19} - 50.423 / 87.683
[PS3] Armored Core V (From Software) {2012.01.26} - 170.237 / 223.656

Actually, Rayman could be a surprise just like Lego City. Not that i believe in it, but i've never believed that much on Lego City also.

But i don't think it's worth it to make a prediction on it. It's not going to do big numbers even on the best case scenario.

And i don't think anyone expected Epic Mickey to do good since it was published by Spike, but i'm surprised that it was so low. The first Epic Mickey was a mild sucess a couple of years ago. Perhaps the bad word of mouth on the title killed the expectations?

I said shipments. Not sales. One would think that since Zelda is a big IP that has a good fanbase, retailers shipments would be equivalent of between 80k-100k. I'm not expecting greatness either, but an opening north of 40k would be my ideal guess. We will see Wednesday I guess.

A 40k opening would still be terrible. OOT 3D opened with ~180k iirc. Console Zelda is dead in Japan, sadly.

If after all the info for Zelda coming you still want to believe it's heading for a 100k+ opening get ready for a very rude awakening this Wednesday.

outside comgnet top 20 preeorders aswell, which means it was below 2 versions of sen no kiseki. Also has sold less than sen no kiseki on amazon.

yes its all anecdotal but its all pointing in the same direction

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
A simple question: if Puzzle & Dragons Z will be very successful (so far, Amazon + Comgnet charts are saying it'll certainly sell, but to seriously reach that 1 millions goal? We don't have enough infos for now), do you think we will see more Japanese smartphone franchises going to 3DS and/or Vita, with specific chapters for consoles, and not mere ports of the mobile titles?
