The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

The game is so intense (in a good way) that I am happy to do a single operation at a time then rest.

The music on 006-A is so damn good! This game has incredible tunes :)

Having finished on Normal, replaying it now. Not sure whether to try to do better on a 2nd normal run, or just jump into hard.

I believe he means when he can do it without using a multi-unite morph. I have no idea if it actually is an ability that you can unlock for the gun though.

Yeah, you can unlock it, just like with the other main weapons.

Trying to platinum orochi and I forgot how fun the boss is. I must have retried that stage like 12 times (I still haven't got him yet, I keep getting hit by laambo at the end) but I'm still having fun. I think I'll be able to get it tomorrow.

That emotional track that plays during 006
during the Rhullo/Vorkken backstory
reminds me so much of Joe Hisaishi. It's so damn good.

Pretty much everyone except the black guy(smh racism) has a Stringer/Rising/Cyclone variant you can earn through continued usage of that weapon and heroes who comply with that weapon. This levels up quite a bit faster when you use bigger morphs, as you could imagine.

I STILL don't have Wonder Cyclone with gun though...

To be fair, Black does have probably the best Wonder Cyclone in the game, and his Rising function is just throwing a bomb above him and doesn't need to be unlocked.

but yeah no stinger is racist as hell

I love how enemy encounters don't feel repetitive. I never get the feeling that an encounter is just by the numbers. Space is used really well, unlike a lot of action games. Moving some enemies from open wide areas to tight spaces make the encounters play completely different.

I feel like even the "normal" bad guys are more interesting than a lot of boss fights in other games. And boss fights are just so epic. I'm excited to finish this game.

To think I wasn't sure that I wanted this game... shame on me!

Already spend 116hrs on the game and I'm still coming back for more. Might out do my 180hrs on Bayonetta.

I'm more a danmaku guy but the Gradius / Viewpoint part is not bad

006-B is a bad level.

The first part, is fun, but
the shmup part is annoying and way too slow, plus it has that awful see saw battle (the second one in the game, when one would have been too many), and that terrible wind section that needs to stop showing up in games.

I just really fucking hate this level.

The gimmick levels, like the rest of the game, tend to get less frustrating the more you do it.
It became a lot easier when I figured out
you can absorb the bullets with guts

The
wind
section was fine, the
see-saw
battle I had no problem with
you just need to be patient
, although they wouldn't be as bad if
Unite Gun and Unite Bowgun went across the plane of the surface you are on, instead of staying horizontal: jumping while shooting seems to fix it a bit though
.

EDIT: Was that one-off (I think it only appeared once) enemy in 009-A a
Gradius
reference? The
game had a bunch of moai, didn't it?

I just beat the game the other day and...wow. This game. I don't think I've felt this way about a game since Kid Icarus: Uprising. In fact, there are many parallels between this game and that one, interestingly...

Anyway, I'll probably start playing through it again on Hard Mode soon. I do have a few questions, though... Namely,
is there any way to use the "special" Unite Morphs whenever you want? Like Drill, Bowgun, Naginata, and Boomerang? Or are these only ever available on the levels in which you have those characters on your team?

You can unlock those abilities in the form of secret characters, who become a part of your permanent group of heroes.

Ah, good to know! I would be sad if they were restricted to just a few levels.

I haven't looked into the requirements for unlockable characters yet. I should get on that, lol.

Also, are there any differences when playing through the game a second time on Hard Mode (or any mode, I guess, since you can select whichever difficulty you want),
aside from the prologue stage with Wonder-Goggles
? Just curious. I haven't really started my second playthrough yet aside from that intro.

He does have a stinger input move. It's a long throw basically, useful in a couple situations.

Hum dee dum, completing Hard mode and then Final Kahkoo Regah...nopenopenope.

I feel your pain, I just spent more than an hour breaking down his patterns. 8-C is really hard to PP because you have to run through the gauntlet and then fight him without getting hit. Decided to practice on Hard mode Kahkoo-Regah and can finally kick his ass pretty much everytime. It's totally doable if you stick with it!

Sweet Jesus, what difficulty was that.

EDIT: What is Bottle Cap 101? Is it something stupid like getting perfect platinum on every stage on 101% difficulty, and is it required for anything?

Hard mode. And I think Bottle Cap 101 is given to you for getting all the other ones.

Hard mode mixes up the encounters. You'll be fighting late-game enemies from the very start, and missions often put you against multiple tough enemies at the same time. I think their AI is different as well; I remember thinking they were more aggressive. Kakhoo Regah missions are also different to the ones in normal.

I finally got to play this for the first time this weekend, and it's insane. I'm only somewhere in Operation 003, and I'm blown away by the fact that I've already seen most of those scenes that appear in GIFs frequenty. I can't wait to play more.

I always considered myself a pretty decent gamer, but I've been getting a lot of Consolation Prizes on Normal, so I'll have to reevaluate my assessment, haha. I can't imagine trying to Perfect Platinum this game.

I love how every power is incorporated in battle. I try to mix things up, but I really would like to stop relying on Unite Sword so much. I need some more variety in my play! I'm a sucker for upgrades, so I'm glad there's no shortage of that here.

I like the clever design of some GamePad sections, but I find the camera to be absolutely awful in those sections.

Ah, I was like you once... But once you work out combo systems and get better at drawing, you're going to feel so much more ninja.

And for the gamepad sections - push the 'L' button.

I'm at 3-B now. I love all the mileage they got out of the
giant robot
across the last several stages.

Also, what's the most efficient way to take down the turtles? I find myself supersizing my hammer and whittling away at their shells until the shell cracks, at which point I mob them with the swarm attack to stun and continue hammering them. I think I tipped one over once by using Unite Guts as it tried to stomp me. I also try using the sword whenever they stretch out their head and expose their necks, although this doesn't seem to deal much damage.

The whole process is reliable, but still takes awhile. What's the best way to take down the turtles?
Don't worry about trying to cut their necks. Not an actual mechanic.

An effective method I found is stay in front of them with the hammer, 9/10 times they'll lift their foot to smack you. Unite Guts that shit, then immediately switch to big fist and start whaling on the underbelly to flip him over on his back. When he's stun like this, he's vulnerable and also dizzy(note the blue stars over his head), so you get +100 with every strike. Unite Hand is impervious to fire, so don't even worry about dodging the fire attacks from the other turtle, just keep ya head on a swivel for that head snap because it's got a huge range and deceptively fast tell. If you don't manage to kill him before he flips back over, you should at least have taken down his first health bar and his red weakspot will still be vulnerable, so you can quickly kill him with a big fist instead of the slow hammer. Rinse and repeat for the other turtle.

I think Retro had another method of Wonder-Parrying everything and Unite Hammer Cyclone spamming/cancelling, and then there's the glorious Unite Bomb + Attack Liner, but you're really early and probably don't even have those moves, so stick with the above strat.

Just to interject a bit, you don't absolutely have to use Unite Guts. If you just stand with a hammer out you'll get the same effect against the foot stomp. Not sure if it works with a bigger hammer though as I usually do it after my morph reverts to its smallest form.

Yeah, there's a yellow stun state and a blue dizzy state. TBH, I actually don't know much of a difference in damage, but many enemies can only be juggled after a stun/dizzy state. Many of the combo points you'll need for the Platinum requirements will come from stunning/dizzying big enemies, and racking up the +100 bonuses for every successful hit, alongside the various multiplier increases the weapons do. They all have their little nuances to learn that you'll figure out as you go along and experiment.
Call golden/climb attacked guys disabled. Call guys with blue stars staggered. If we don't agree with nomenclature then it'll be confusing in the future. So I'll arbitrarily declare the use of mine.

The basic difference between the two is that if you want the +100 bonus points, you need to juggle a disabled enemy in the air while you only have to hit a staggered enemy in any way you see fit.

Pretty much everyone except the black guy(smh racism) has a Stringer/Rising/Cyclone variant you can earn through continued usage of that weapon and heroes who comply with that weapon. This levels up quite a bit faster when you use bigger morphs, as you could imagine.

Wonder Black does have Wonder skills though...

Yep. Although I just realized I've only ever done his skills through buffered attacks...

I still don't have Green's Wonder Cyclone unlocked either. Just been using buffer attacks from Sword when necessary.

What are you having diff with control-wise?
Drawing shit just feels fucking finnicky at times. I'm on Operation 003 now and this is the first Kamiya game that I'm genuinely hating. The game is cumbersome, frustrating, and visually cluttered. Right now I'm just cheesing my way through fights by abusing continues to keep from smashing my Game Pad in half.

Edit: Bah I meant to type Kamiya but P.N.03 rocks!

My "best" combo so far is the Rising Sword move, a few Sword Cyclones, some standard airborne Sword attacks, a Multi-Unite Hammer, then a Tombstone. I haven't learned to use many morphs to their full potential yet. I actually think Unite Sword is the only one with a Rising and a Cyclone so far.

As for the camera tip, it does give me a bit more control, but it still seems pretty bad. It's not a game breaker, thankfully.

practice, practice, practice. the game is pretty hard but getting plats becomes a breeze once you learn your moves and how the flow of fights works.

i had some real trouble coming from Bayonetta, a game that looks like it has a lot in common, to this, but once the mechanics click it's bliss

Hmm, I'm getting better at the Combo and Damage portions of rankings, but I'm still having trouble with time and overall how long/damage I take trying to get through the stages and their hazards.

Er, I guess it's just at the end of the first playthough. I figured it would be a replacement for the prologue of the second playthrough.
So does that mean you don't get to use Wonder-Goggles throughout your second playthrough? :(

Ah, okay. I expected as much when it comes to the gameplay and all. I was more referring to story elements. It just seems like there are a lot of loose ends at the end of the story that I thought they might touch upon on a second playthrough. I thought the ending of the first playthrough might have been teasing that. I guess not. :( Ah well, that'd be more than I would have expected, anyway.

Is the strategy guide worth picking up for subsequent playthoughs?

I picked it up last week and I think it's terrible other than for helping you collect everything in the game. It has no frame data, doesn't go in depth with the mechanics, is missing certain things outright, some of the requirements for rankings are inaccurate, the list goes on.

It's pretty much worthless honestly, I really wish Future-Press could have gotten the contract to do this guide. So many of the sections basically amount to the author saying to avoid damage and keep on the offensive! Inspirational words!

8-C is a wonderful pain in the behind to Pure Platinum btw. I think
Giga-Goojin is easier in the Hard mode Kahkoo-Regah than in normal 8-C

That's the most important thing for a guide though for these games. I don't need them telling me how to play.

It does however tell you enemy behavior, which again I feel is more important for a guide than telling you step by step how to play.

That stuff is finally popping up online though so it's probably not as useful anymore.

It is a bit unclear in some places. Like some of the Kahgoo Regah missions and I think it has told me about hammer spots that weren't actually there.

but come on knocking it for not having frame data is pretty insane lol.

Discovered recently that Wonder-Black has Wonder-Cyclone but that's it. He'll throw 3 bombs around him, one of the size of your current morph and two small ones. And wtf at no Wonder-Cyclone with green JC, level them Wonder-dudes or you'll never get Wonder-Big. Love using it against the Laambo guys.

Not really, I want information about the game that I can't obtain otherwise. Collectibles and maps is the bare minimum, the Vanquish guide for example was absolutely sublime in comparison to this. I don't want a guide to tell me how to play but I appreciate when they point out the EXACT differences in enemy properties between difficulties, how the damage is calculated, how the scoring system works behind the scenes with exact point values. That's the kind of data you can only get from the developer, that's what I want from a player's guide.

Me and my friend just finished a multiplayer coop session.

He haven't played the game or watched any mechanic tutorial so, I let him play the prologue and 001-A first, and he seem confused like we all did.

In the middle of our 3 hour coop session, he can counter and evade properly. He can also draw morphs using the stick. He thought the game was very fun.
